    Isaac Asimov’s Terrifying Vision of the Afterlife | The Last Answer

    What would eternal life mean if you had no say in how you spent it? In Isaac Asimov’s “The Last Answer,” physicist Murray Templeton dies and finds himself speaking to an intelligence that has preserved his mind. It understands his objections. It can explain why he exists. But Murray’s wishes have very little to do with what it has planned for him. Today, I’m looking at one of Asimov’s most unsettling visions of the afterlife: why the Voice needs human minds, what its power actually allows it to know, and how Murray responds to an existence he never agreed to. I also return to Robert Charles Wilson’s “Divided by Infinity” and Asimov’s “The Last Question,” both of which I’ve covered before.     The Strange Horror of Quantum Eternity | Divided By Infinity

    There are countless ways you could die today. A blood vessel could rupture in your brain. A distracted driver could cross the center line. Your heart could simply stop. From somewhere above us, high-energy particles pass through our bodies every second, and on exceedingly rare occasions microscopic events can begin chains of consequences large enough to kill. We tend not to think about this because, from our perspective, only one thing actually happens. You either make it home tonight or you don't. But what if that isn't true? What if every physically possible outcome actually occurs somewhere? There is a universe where the driver misses you, another where he doesn't, another where you never got into the car at all. And if all of those realities exist, there is a disturbing question hiding inside the idea: what happens from your point of view? You can experience surviving. You can experience waking up after the accident, hearing the doctor say the treatment worked, discovering that the bullet missed. But you can never experience being dead. That asymmetry between survival and death is what we need to focus on here. If consciousness can only ever find itself on branches where it continues, then survival is not really luck, it’s actually a forced migration through possibility.     The Alien Wasn't God After All | The Island

    Humanity has always imagined the road to the stars from the perspective of the people who will eventually travel it. We imagine stepping through some impossible doorway and emerging beneath an alien sun. We imagine the distance between worlds finally defeated, entire galaxies transformed into neighborhoods, and the cold emptiness of space reduced to a minor inconvenience. But roads do not build themselves. Someone has to cross the distance first. Someone has to enter the darkness before there is a doorway through it. Someone has to spend thousands, millions, perhaps billions of years laying the foundation for a civilization they may never live to see. And when that civilization finally arrives, transformed by time into something its ancestors could not recognize, what does it owe the people who built the road? In Peter Watts’s The Island Humanity has already conquered the stars, or at least something descended from humanity has. An immense network of wormhole gates now allows ships and civilizations to move across interstellar space. But the people constructing that network cannot use it.     The Most Horrifying Kind of Immortality | Lena

    “Lena” is a short story by Qntm, the same author behind There Is No Antimemetics Division, a book I covered before and called one of the scariest stories I had read in years. That story is about a hidden thing beneath the world, something so dangerous that even knowing about it becomes part of the problem. I actually had the opportunity to speak with Qntm recently, and we discussed several aspects of that book in a conversation that will be released soon. But “Lena” is terrifying in a very different way. Lena is written like a future encyclopedia article about MMAcevedo, the first executable image of a human brain in the year 2031. The scan is more complex than a simple recording of his brain. It is detailed enough to be run as software. Earlier scans of human brains had existed, but they were unstable or incomplete.     The Terrible Truth About Consciousness

    Consciousness is the strangest thing in the universe because it is the only thing we know from the inside. It turns matter into memory, pain, fear, love, identity, and the feeling of being someone. But the more science fiction pushes on that idea, the more disturbing it becomes. What if the self is not solid? What if awareness can be copied, stretched, trapped, or broken? What if intelligence does not even require consciousness at all? That is the terrible truth at the heart of these stories. Consciousness may be what makes existence meaningful, but it may also be what makes existence unbearable.
