Filming in Kenya: Stories, Faith & Following God’s Call

What does it really look like to take a camera into the mission field? In Episode 7 of the 5Nine Creative Podcast, we’re recording from Mescal’s Children’s Center of Hope and Mescal’s Christian Academy in Luanda, Kenya. We talk about our experiences filming in Kenya, the relationships that keep bringing us back, and what happens when storytelling becomes more than simply showing up, capturing footage, and leaving. Over the years, we’ve watched children grow up, ministries expand, communities change, and stories we’ve helped tell raise support that continues impacting lives. Along the way, these trips have changed us too—shaping our faith, our families, and the way we think about missions. We also talk honestly about the things that can keep people from going: long flights, finances, safety concerns, uncertainty, and the question of what happens when God calls you somewhere outside your comfort zone. At the end of the day, we don’t travel around the world just to make cool videos. We believe God has given each of us gifts that can be used for something bigger—to serve the Church, amplify the voices of those doing the work, and help proclaim the Gospel to every tribe, language, people, and nation. If God is nudging you to go, create, serve, or use the gifts He’s given you, this conversation is for you. 🎥 Subscribe to the 5Nine Creative Podcast for more conversations about storytelling, missions, creativity, and how God is working around the world. #5NineCreative #ChristianPodcast #Missions #Kenya #MissionaryStories #ChristianCreatives #Storytelling #Faith #ChristianFilmmaking

Behind the Camera: The Stories You Never See

What happens behind the camera can be just as powerful as the story that makes the final cut. In this episode of the 5Nine Creative Podcast, we’re sharing what storytelling on the mission field actually looks like—from packing camera gear for international travel and adapting when plans fall apart to building trust with the people whose stories we’ve been invited to tell. Along the way, we reflect on experiences in places like Kenya, Uganda, Nepal, Ecuador, Thailand, and Mongolia, where some of the most meaningful moments were never part of the original plan—and sometimes never made it into the finished film. Because ministry storytelling isn’t just about cameras, gear, or getting the shot. It’s about relationships, being present, honoring the people in front of the camera, and staying open to what God may be doing beyond the story you came to capture. #5NineCreative #MissionStorytelling #ChristianCreatives #Missions #Storytelling #Filmmaking #Ministry #ChristianFilmmaker

From Rescue to Purpose: Raising Up Gospel Ambassadors in Kenya | Dr. Steven Owuor

In this episode of the 5Nine Creative Podcast, we’re recording in Western Kenya with Dr. Steven Owuor,  a leader with Mescals Children’s Center of Hope. What began with a vision to rescue vulnerable children has grown into something much bigger—a children’s home, Christian school, community outreach, and now a new senior high school. But Steven explains why the goal has never simply been to meet needs. It’s to help children and families discover their God-given purpose and become people who impact others. We talk about the role of the gospel in true transformation, why ministries need deep roots before visible growth, the danger of creating a culture of receivers, and how empowering parents can transform an entire community. Steven also shares the remarkable story of Repha, who came to Mescals at five years old after losing her mother and experiencing severe trauma. Today, she’s thriving academically and recently earned first place in a regional science competition—just one example of what can happen when rescue becomes opportunity, purpose, and hope. This conversation is ultimately about more than Kenya. It’s about listening when God plants a seed, faithfully building what He’s put in front of you, and trusting Him with what grows from it. Because the goal isn’t simply to meet a need. It’s to help people discover who God created them to be.

    5 Mistakes Creatives Make

Great creative work isn’t just about having the best camera, the latest gear, or the most talent. In Episode 4 of the 5Nine Podcast, we’re breaking down five common mistakes we see creatives make—and several of them we’ve made ourselves. We talk about why more gear doesn’t always make you a better storyteller, the danger of copying other creators instead of developing your own voice, why bad audio can ruin great video, how learning to truly listen can uncover the best parts of a story, and why some creatives simply quit too soon. Along the way, we share real stories from years of filming—from missed moments and unusable audio to bad early projects and lessons learned while creating around the world. Whether you’re just getting started or you’ve been creating for years, the goal isn’t perfection. It’s to keep practicing, keep growing, and become someone people can trust with their stories. 🎙️ Episode 4: 5 Mistakes Creatives Make Watch here or at https://youtu.be/kDTPOePDawk #CreativeStorytelling #Videography #Filmmaking #ContentCreators #Storytelling #CreativeMinistry #5NineCreative
