GrimSpotting

Nick Montelupo

GrimSpotting is an ethical true crime podcast about cases, timelines, evidence, institutions, and the human cost of getting the story wrong. Hosted with restraint and source discipline, GrimSpotting rejects killer worship, gore bait, rumor laundering, body-language fantasy, and internet mob certainty. Each episode reconstructs the catastrophe without turning the perpetrator into the product or the victim into content. Some episodes examine specific cases. Others break down the methods true crime audiences need: timeline analysis, coercive-control patterns, wrongful suspicion, institutional failure, media distortion, legal aftermath, and the difference between what is known, alleged, suspected, and speculative. This is true crime without the mob. Facts first. Conclusions after. Do not mythologize the perpetrator. Reconstruct the catastrophe.

Oakey Al Kite — The Tenant Who Erased Himself

In May 2004, Oakey Albert “Al” Kite was found brutally murdered in the basement of his home in Aurora, Colorado. Just days earlier, he'd rented that same basement to a man calling himself Robert Cooper. But Robert Cooper didn't exist. His name was false. His personal information was fabricated. His references led nowhere. And after Al's murder, the mysterious tenant vanished. Investigators uncovered a trail of disturbing clues: ATM surveillance footage showing a masked man using Al's pickup truck, a prepaid cellphone, witness accounts of a possible limp and Eastern European accent, and unidentified male DNA recovered from the crime scene. Yet more than two decades later, the man known as Robert Cooper has never been publicly identified. In this episode of GrimSpotting — The Crime File, we reconstruct Al Kite's final days, examine the evidence left behind, explore the theories surrounding the unidentified suspect, and separate what investigators actually know from what remains speculation. Was Al deliberately selected? Did the killer have a criminal history nobody has connected to him? And could modern forensic genealogy finally establish the identity behind the alias? One victim. A fabricated identity. A murder that remains unsolved.
