    Distress

There is a sound a building makes before it falls down. Engineers have a word for it. They call it distress. Welcome to The Association: A Condo Noir — a comedic investigative podcast inspired by the very real, very unhinged world of homeowners associations. If you have ever sat through an HOA meeting, fought a board over a fence color, gotten a fine for the wrong mailbox, or fallen down a 2 a.m. internet rabbit hole of HOA horror stories — this show was made for you. We take the true chaos of condo boards, special assessments, power-mad presidents, and buildings held together by deferred maintenance and laminated signage, and we transform it into a serialized comedy mystery you can binge. Every absurd detail in this show is the kind of thing that really happens in the world of HOAs. The characters, the building, and the events are fictional and composite — invented, dramatized, exaggerated for your enjoyment — but the spirit is 100% real. Anyone who has lived under a homeowners association will recognize these people. You may have voted one of them onto a board. In this first episode, "Distress," reporter Maya Torres introduces you to Las Brisas Tower: twelve stories of sun-bleached 1980s stucco on the Florida coast, built in a boom, aged by salt air, and — the year our story begins — one year overdue for the structural recertification that's supposed to determine whetherit's safe for human beings to live there at all. It is a building in distress. It is also a building full of people who have learned to live inside that sound. In other words: it's an HOA.
