EP05 : Fantastic Night — Stefan Zweig | a man who felt nothing, shocked violently alive in a single night

He has money, leisure, standing, and the affection of everyone around him — and inside, he is dead. Honor, love, grief: nothing reaches him anymore, as if a pane of glass stood between him and real life. For years he has drifted, elegant and untouched, like a machine turning coolly on itself. Then, one June afternoon at the Vienna races, on a sudden malicious impulse, he does a small, shameful thing — and to his horror feels not shame but a wild, drunken joy. Blood that has been frozen for years comes roaring back to life. What follows is one fantastic night: he abandons his cold, respectable world and plunges into the roar of the fairground crowd, into the lowest and darkest corners of the city, hunting for the one thing he has never truly had — the feeling of being alive. One of Zweig's most electrifying novellas — on numbness and awakening, and how far a man must fall to live, just once, for real. Told through the manuscript of a man who did not survive the war that came after. A fresh English translation made directly from Zweig's 1922 German original, read aloud and unabridged. — ClutchCut Classics: Stefan Zweig 中文版 / Chinese edition: https://open.spotify.com/show/2fM3oiJr6e09HVyqDcWyJy 📖 Production & coordination: ClutchCut Studio 🎵 Sound design & mixing: ClutchCut Studio; ambient string passages (selected from the ClutchCut Music Library) 📝 Source text: from Stefan Zweig's collection Amok: Novellas of a Passion (Amok: Novellen einer Leidenschaft) 🌐 Official site: https://www.clutchcut.studio/ 🎬 Visuals & more projects: https://www.clutchcut.studio/podcasts

EP04 : The Woman and the Landscape — Stefan Zweig | a drought, a storm that won't break, and one sleepwalking night

For weeks an alpine valley has lain gasping under a merciless heat wave — not a drop of rain, the earth cracked, the air burning saffron with dust and fire. A traveler, feverish with the same sultriness as the parched land, waits for a storm that gathers, threatens, and again and again refuses to break. In that airless, waiting world he notices a young woman consumed by the same fever — standing open-armed against the sky like a white, thirsting flower. And that night, when the whole landscape holds its breath in the dark, she comes to his room, half asleep, half in a trance… One of Zweig's most sensuous novellas: desire and nature burning together, a woman and a parched land fused in the sultry dark — until the first lightning finally falls, and the world, and she, wake changed. EP03 : Moonlight Alley — Stefan Zweig | a miser's love, and a dark alley with a knife in it

Stranded overnight in a foreign port town, a traveler drifts into the dark maze of the sailors' quarter — and, drawn by a German song floating out of the shadows, into a smoky dive where a woman is savagely humiliating a cringing, broken man. The more vicious she is, the less he will leave. Out in the alley afterward, the man tells the traveler the other half of the story: this trampled wretch was once a prosperous farmer — and once her husband. He loved her, and tormented her with his stinginess until he drove her out and down into the gutter; and only when it was far too late did he understand how much he loved her. Now, ruined, he has followed her across the world, and waits night after night at the mouth of this alley — with a knife in his coat. A story of love curdled into cruelty: pride, degradation, and an obsession that will not let go. EP02 : Amok — Stefan Zweig | a proud woman's secret and the obsession that ran like madness

On a becalmed night steamer sailing home from the East, a stranger presses a confession on a fellow passenger — the story he can tell no one who knows him. He was a doctor, buried alive in a remote colonial outpost, when a proud, beautiful woman appeared at his door with a cold, desperate request and a fistful of money: to save her from a scandal before her husband returns. In the space of a heartbeat something breaks loose in him — a madness the Malays call running amok, in which a man, seized by a single fixed idea, runs straight ahead, blind and unstoppable, until he drops. What he demands of her in return, and where his obsession drives him once she flees in contempt, becomes a headlong chase toward ruin — and a secret he will guard past the edge of death. One of Zweig's most feverish novellas: pride, desire, guilt, and the terrible momentum of a fixed idea. EP01 : Letter from an Unknown Woman — Stefan Zweig | a lifetime of love, and the man who never knew her

On his forty-first birthday, a famous novelist opens a letter from a woman he cannot remember. "You, who never knew me," it begins — and over the pages that follow she tells him the whole of her secret life: how she loved him from the age of thirteen, the girl next door he never noticed; how, grown, she gave herself to him for a few nights he soon forgot; how she bore his child and raised it alone rather than burden him; and how, meeting again years later, he took her for a stranger — and for a woman to be paid. Now she is dying, and writes to him for the first and last time — asking nothing, explaining everything. One of Zweig's most devastating novellas: a portrait of invisible, absolute devotion, and of a man who drifted through a life quietly shaped, all along, by one woman's love. A fresh English translation made directly from Zweig's 1922 German original, read aloud and unabridged. — ClutchCut Classics: Stefan Zweig 中文版 / Chinese edition: https://open.spotify.com/show/2fM3oiJr6e09HVyqDcWyJy 📖 Production & coordination: ClutchCut Studio 🎵 Sound design & mixing: ClutchCut Studio; ambient string passages (selected from the ClutchCut Music Library) 📝 Source text: from Stefan Zweig's collection Amok: Novellas of a Passion (Amok: Novellen einer Leidenschaft) 🌐 Official site: https://www.clutchcut.studio/ 🎬 Visuals & more projects: https://www.clutchcut.studio/podcasts
