On Earth, the term refers both to surface-level synthetic materials revolutionizing renewable energy and to deep-Earth minerals that are technically unminable. Chemically, a perovskite is any material with the same crystal structure as calcium titanium oxide (CaTiO3). On Earth's surface, engineered metal-halide perovskites are celebrated for transforming solar technology, offering high-efficiency, low-cost photovoltaic cells that power our transition to clean energy. Conversely, deep beneath our feet, silicate perovskites—specifically bridgmanite ($MgSiO_3$)—form the predominant constituent of Earth's lower mantle. Comprising over half the volume of our planet, bridgmanite is Earth's most abundant mineral, existing only under the crushing pressures of the deep interior. Looking outward across the Solar System, perovskite-structured minerals are believed to form deep inside the mantles of other rocky worlds and large planetary bodies, shaped by similar high-pressure regimes. While we cannot physically mine the inaccessible deep mantles of Earth or neighboring planets, studying perovskites bridges the gap between planetary evolution and advanced space-age power systems. Understanding these crystal structures remains vital for both deploying next-generation solar arrays in space and deciphering the geological history of the cosmos.
