Fighting for Rural Iowa with J.D. Scholten

Episode 3 of the Sage Against the Machine Podcast featured former congressional candidate J.D. Scholten for an in-depth conversation about the future of rural Iowa, working families, and why he continues to fight for Northwest Iowa. Nathan was joined by co-hosts Dr. Bob Leonard and, making his debut on the show, Spencer Dirks, as the podcast continues its mission of bringing honest conversations to working people. J.D. discussed his journey to public service, the political changes taking place across Iowa’s 4th Congressional District, and what he’s hearing from voters in rural communities. The conversation also explored agriculture, small-town challenges, the future of the Democratic Party in rural Iowa, and why he remains optimistic about Iowa’s future. In Headlines That Matter, the team discussed the uncertainty surrounding Senate leadership following Mitch McConnell’s hospitalization, the impact of Iowa losing nearly 17% of its USDA workforce on farmers across the state, and several Iowa political stories making headlines. Nathan closed the episode with “What’s Making Nathan Cuss?”, focusing on how Medicaid cuts are putting additional pressure on rural hospitals and healthcare providers, arguing that every Iowan deserves access to affordable healthcare close to home, regardless of where they live. Iowa Needs Leaders Who Listen

Episode 2 of Sage Against The Machine was about more than politics, it was about the people who have to live with the decisions politicians make every day. I sat down with State Representative and Democratic congressional candidate Lindsay James to talk about why she’s running for Iowa’s 2nd Congressional District and what she’s hearing from folks across Northeast Iowa. We talked about the cost of living, health care, rural communities, and why too many working families feel like Washington has stopped listening. We also broke down some of the biggest stories in the news, including the Trump administration’s expanded immigration crackdown and the new Iowa laws that are already affecting people across our state. I didn’t hold back when it came to the sexual assault allegations against Maine Senate candidate Graham Platner. It doesn’t matter what party you’re in, if you want to lead, you should be held to a higher standard. And in this week’s “What’s Making Nathan Cuss?” I asked a simple question: When did common sense become partisan? Working people don’t care who gets the political win. They want roads fixed, farmers supported, veterans respected, and health care they can afford. That’s not a Republican idea or a Democratic idea. It’s just common sense. If you’re tired of the noise and want real conversations about the issues that matter, give Episode 2 a watch. Thanks for being part of this growing community. We’re just getting started. Sage Against The Machine Episode 1

After months on the campaign trail, countless conversations with Iowans, and a growing belief that working people deserve honest political discussions without the spin, Sage Against The Machine is officially here. In our debut episode, Nathan Sage is joined by Dr. Bob Leonard to launch a new podcast that airs twice a week, featuring honest conversations about the issues that matter most to everyday Americans, not political insiders. Our first guest is U.S. Senate candidate Josh Turek, who shares his journey into public service, his vision for Iowa and the country, and why he believes now is the time to step forward and lead. The conversation also reflects on America’s 250th anniversary, the biggest challenges facing Iowa families, and the issues shaping the future of our nation. We also break down some of the biggest headlines of the week, including the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision striking down limits on coordinated campaign spending, the growing gap between positive economic reports and the financial realities facing working families, Iowa’s increasing energy demands from data centers, and the closure of Planned Parenthood’s Iowa City location. Then Nathan debuts a new weekly segment, “What’s Making Nathan Cuss?” This week’s rant takes on the growing influence of big money in politics and why fundraising has become one of the biggest obstacles for candidates who simply want to serve their communities. Thank you to everyone who watched, listened, shared, and supported our first episode. This podcast exists to have real conversations, ask tough questions, and give working people a voice in the political discussion. We’ll be back on Tuesday, July 7, at 5:00 p.m. with our next guest, District 2 congressional candidate Lindsay James. If you haven’t already, be sure to subscribe, follow the show, and share the podcast with someone who’s ready for a different kind of political conversation. Welcome to Sage Against The Machine. We’re just getting started. Get full access to Sage Against The Machine at sageagainstthemachineia.substack.com/subscribe
