    The Last Star to Switch On: The Universe Is Almost Done Being Born (S05 - E54)

    Every star has a birthday — the moment its fire first switches on. Tonight we count them, all the way to the last one. 🌌 THE SKY IS STILL HAVING BIRTHDAYS. Right now, in our own island of stars, a few new fires switch on every year. That part is measured, not guessed — the nurseries are visible tonight to anyone who looks. BUT THE WHOLE SKY HAS BEEN COUNTED ACROSS TIME. And the count says something nobody expects: star birth is not steady. It PEAKED — more than ten thousand million years ago — and it has been quieting ever since. HOW QUIET? For every five stars the noon sky made, the sky today makes fewer than one. The great star-making age is already behind us, and it has been behind us for most of the history of the universe. AND WE KNOW WHY. Stars are folded from gas, and the gas is a fixed purse. Recycling gives some of it back — dying stars return part of what they borrowed — but lockup drains it for good: whatever gets sealed into small, patient stars and dim remnants never comes back to make anything new. THEN THE TWIST, AND IT TURNS THE ENDING INTO A GIFT. Count every star that will ever shine, from the first to the very last. Of every twenty of them, NINETEEN are already lit. At most one is still to come. Tonight's sky is close to the fullest library it will ever be. THE CLOCK ON THE LAST BIRTHDAY IS WRITTEN IN PENCIL. The final first light lies about seventy ages of the universe away at the soonest — maybe a few thousand. It will most likely be a small red star, far too dim to see, switching on quietly with nobody near. AND WE SAY THE HONEST PART OUT LOUD. When the birthdays finally stop, the lights do not go out. What ends on that far day is only the beginning of new fires — every star already shining keeps right on shining, some of them for longer than the universe has yet existed. SO HERE IS THE LANDING.     The Story That Gets Erased: The Sky Is Slowly Deleting Its Own Clues (S05 - E53)

    Last night we promised you a sky that slowly loses its own story. Tonight we watch the losing happen, in slow motion. 🌌 A SKY IS NOT A BOOK — SO HOW CAN IT LOSE ANYTHING? Because a sky carries clues, and clues can be carried away. The stretching of space is quietly moving the far islands of stars out past a one-way line that light itself can never cross again. AND MOST OF THEM ARE ALREADY PAST IT. More than nine of every ten. Not one of them moved, nothing made a sound, and nobody felt it happen — the line simply passed them. BUT OUT OF REACH IS NOT OUT OF SIGHT. This is the part people get wrong, so we draw it carefully. The light those islands already sent keeps arriving, fainter and redder every year. You can still see them tonight. You just can no longer ever get there, or send anything back. OUR OWN FAMILY STAYS. That is the comfort, and it is measured, not hoped. Gravity holds our island group together — whichever way last night's coin flip lands, the family arrives at the same place. Everything beyond it is what gets carried away. THEN THE CLOCK, AND IT IS WRITTEN IN PENCIL. In roughly seven ages of the universe, the far lights stretch so far past red that finding them stops being practical. Over hundreds of ages more, the last faint traces go too. AND WE SAY THE HONEST PART OUT LOUD. That whole forecast leans on the push continuing exactly as it does now — and that is precisely the number being re-measured today. So the clock stays pencil, deliberately, and we tell you which parts are ink and which are not. NOW THE STRANGEST IDEA IN THE SEASON. Picture an explorer at a window exactly like ours, unimaginably far in the future. Their sky holds one island and a blank beyond it. They are careful. They are honest. They run the very same method we do. AND THEY GET IT WRONG — THROUGH NO FAULT OF THEIR OWN. They conclude their island is everything, and always simply was. Right by their lights. Wrong in fact. Not because they were careless, but because the evidence had already left. WHICH TURNS THE WHOLE THING INSIDE OUT. The clues are perishable. The fade is unimaginably slow.     The Crash That Might Not Happen: We Are Partly Taking It Back (S05 - E52)

    On our very first night, this show told you something. Our great neighbour galaxy is drifting in for a cosmic crash. Tonight we open our own notebook to that page and mark it up, in front of you. 🌌 FIRST, THE PART NOBODY ARGUES WITH. The approach is real. It is read straight off the colour of the light, and it is closing at about a hundred kilometres every second — across a gap so wide that light itself spends over two million years crossing it. AND ONE COLLISION TRULY IS CERTAIN. Just not the famous one. The bright little cloud of stars riding along beside us is being reeled gently home, and it will be folded in over about two thousand million years. That is the firm floor, and it comes first on purpose. THEN THE FAMOUS ONE BENT. Somebody rebuilt the forecast properly — ran the future a hundred thousand times, and let every single measurement carry its honest doubt, across more than twenty separate quantities instead of just the headline one. AND THE PROMISED CRASH BECAME A COIN FLIP. Roughly even odds over the next ten thousand million years. The head-on smash everybody pictures? Down near two chances in a hundred. NOTHING BROKE. EVERYTHING GOT COUNTED. This is the part worth carrying out of the episode. The answer did not get worse because the science got worse. It got less certain because the doubt got counted honestly, and once you count it honestly there is enough of it to hold two opposite futures at the same time. THEN THE PAGE MOVED AGAIN. Months later, a sharper reading of the wobbliest number in the whole calculation tipped it back the other way: around nine futures in ten now end in the joining. AND THE HONEST PART. The very paper that reports it also says the case is not shut — the span runs from fairly likely all the way up to certain. The measurement that will settle it is already being aimed. SO THE PAGE STAYS IN PENCIL, DELIBERATELY. Twice in a single year the answer moved. That is not science failing in front of you. That is science working in front of you, and a child who understands that once will understand every headline they read for the rest of their life. WHICH LEAVES TONIGHT'S REAL LESSON. More data made us less sure, and less sure was the honest answer.     The Ember Nobody Has Ever Seen: Not One Exists Anywhere Yet (S05 - E51)

    Episode 10 left our own star on its very last frame: a quiet ember about the size of this world, sitting at the heart of a drifting ring of gas. Tonight Vega picks that exact frame up and asks the only question left. What happens after that? 🕯️ It cools. That is the whole of it. THERE IS NOTHING LEFT IN IT TO BURN. So it does the only thing available to a warm object — it leaks the heat it already holds, quietly, in every direction, as light. It is not burning. It is cooling. And that one word carries the episode. SO IT GOES DARK QUICKLY? The opposite is nearer the truth. It is small and dense and holds its heat the way a stone oven does, hours after the fire is out. Our own farthest traveller is running on stored heat tonight — the rule needs nothing more than warmth and somewhere colder to lose it into. AND HERE IS WHERE THE SKY DOES THE WORK FOR US. Nobody ever had to sit and watch one cool down. The sky is full of embers at every stage at once — the freshly exposed ones run to a hundred thousand degrees, and the coolest we have ever found sit near three thousand. We photographed the whole run of them in a single night. That row IS the cooling, read straight off the sky rather than predicted. THEN THE ROW STOPS. And the first thing anybody asked is the obvious worry: are the cold ones sitting there and simply too faint to catch? So they took one patch of sky nearby and counted every object in it, out to a fixed distance, until nearly nothing was left out. Inside that finished count, the cold ones are still absent. Faintness is ruled out. SO WHY DOES IT STOP? Arithmetic you could do at the kitchen table. A star like ours takes about four thousand million years to finish and become an ember. Then about six thousand million more to cool to the warmth our own star shows now. Four and six is ten. And the flat part of our galaxy is about ten thousand million years old. THE SAME NUMBER, TWICE. The row stops exactly where it must. That is not a hole in our looking — it is a calendar, written in starlight, and it agrees with us. A prediction landing on its mark is a quiet triumph. NOW THE TURN. Take that row to its very end: a properly cold ember, with no glow left in it anywhere. How many of those have we counted in the entire sky? None. Not one, in any direction anybody has ever pointed. And nothing whatever has gone wrong to bring that about. THE AIRTIGHT VERSION NEEDS NO MODEL AT ALL. Suppose an ember had somehow existed on the very first day of everything. Thirteen point eight thousand million years of cooling, all of it, spent doing nothing else. Tonight that ember would STILL be glowing at your window. That is why the sky holds no finished ones for us to find. AND HERE THE PEN CHANGES. The cooling is ink. The date is pencil, and we say so out loud. To stop giving light your eye could catch takes about seven hundred whole ages of the universe. Properly cold is far further on — at the very least seven thousand of those, and possibly seventy thousand. That is a genuine factor of ten and we do not pretend to know which end, because the finish line is a choice somebody has to make, and moving it moves the answer enormously. WHICH LEAVES THE LOVELIEST FACT IN THE SEASON SO FAR. Not one life, in any direction, will ever meet a finished ember.     The Sun That Gets Too Bright: The Ending That Arrives First (S05 - E50)

    Vega spent the whole night guessing at the nearest ending, and she landed on the one everybody lands on: our star swells up and takes the inner worlds with it. ☀️ That ending is real. We told it back in Episode 10. And it is not the one that arrives first. THE QUIET ONE COMES FIRST. Long before any swelling, our star is doing something with no drama in it at all. It is getting brighter. It has been getting brighter since before there was anybody here to notice, and it is doing it while you watch this. IT IS NOT A FORECAST. It already happened, and we can show it. When this world was new, our star was only about seven tenths as bright as it is now. It adds roughly one part in ten every thousand million years. That is read off stars observed at every age across the sky — not predicted, measured. THE NUMBER LANDS BEFORE THE ENDING DOES, AND THAT IS DELIBERATE. A thousand million years is twice as long as there have been animals with backbones anywhere on this world. Get that distance in your hands first, and the ending stops being frightening and starts being interesting. HOW THE OCEANS ACTUALLY GO. Not by boiling. The sea warms, water vapour climbs higher than the rain ever reaches, raw sunlight up there breaks it into pieces, and the lightest piece is light enough to leave for good. The oceans do not boil away. THEY LEAK UPWARD. AND HERE IS THE NEWEST THING, PUBLISHED THIS YEAR. Twenty-nine three-dimensional climate simulations put the maximum lifetime of the plant world near 1.8 thousand million years — comparable to the lifetime of the oceans themselves. But the most surprising result is what happens on the way there: habitability RISES for about the first 1.5 thousand million years, because the cold ends of the world green over and things grow where nothing grew before. It gets GREENER before it gets impossible. THE HONESTY COMPASS, AND THE REASON THIS EPISODE EXISTS. The brightening is INK — measured, already happened, read off the sky. The date is PENCIL, and we say so out loud. The published estimates genuinely spread from about a thousand million years to about two, depending on whose model and which assumptions. So the honest answer is not a mark on a line. It is a broad BAR. AND THE BAR KEEPS MOVING THE SAME WAY. Every time the work gets better, it slides LATER.     The Universe That Is Still a Baby: Everything Ever Fits in the First Breath (S05 - E49)

    Season Five opens with Vega frightened. She sat up all night with the question the last finale planted — how does all of it end? — asked it of herself, and did not like where it went. 🌌 Qubit does not comfort her. He hands her a measurement instead. Then a second one. And the two of them, laid side by side, turn out to be the comfort. THE FIRST CLOCK. Everything that has ever happened fits inside about 13.8 thousand million years. The first light, the long dark, the fog and the dawn, the recipe for you, the great stretch, every creature and every person who has ever lived. All of it. Inside that one number. THE SECOND CLOCK. The stretch of time in which stars get made and burn at all runs to roughly a hundred million million years. Lay those two side by side at their honest sizes and the whole story so far is the FIRST BREATH of it. We are not living near the end of anything. We are absurdly, almost comically early. THEN THE HARDER HALF, AND THE REAL REASON THIS EPISODE EXISTS. Nobody will ever be standing there to watch any of these endings. Not us, not anyone. So how does anybody get to say anything at all? Not by looking forward — there is nothing forward to look at. The answer is method, not prophecy. You measure how a star burns in the places you can actually reach. You test those rules against things you can go and check. You run them onward. And you mark plainly where the tested part stops and the guessing would start. AND HERE IS THE BEST DEMONSTRATION OF THAT, THREE WEEKS OLD. A stellar census submitted on 1 July 2026 aged 155,600 subgiant stars in our own galaxy and found the oldest at about 13.73 thousand million years — arrived at by a completely separate road from the cosmic microwave background, and landing on the same answer. Two independent methods agreeing is about as strong as evidence ever gets. THE HONESTY RULE, SAID OUT LOUD. Almost every children's space channel tells this story as settled: the stars go out, the end, goodnight. That is not what the field currently says. So here is our compass for the whole season, and the part nobody else will admit: THIS SEASON HOLDS MORE PENCIL THAN ANY SEASON WE HAVE MADE. Ink for what has been measured. Pencil for what rests on rules we have run forward. A blank page for what is genuinely open. And pencil is not a weakness — it means people are still arguing, which means the question is still alive. AND SOMETHING IS BEING FILMED RIGHT NOW TO HELP SETTLE IT. On a mountain in Chile, on 30 June 2026 — last month — a ten-year survey of the whole southern sky officially began. It scans every few nights for a decade, and the nature of dark energy is one of the four things it was purpose-built to address. The answer to where this season ends up is being gathered as you watch. We plant it here.     Could We Go There? The Honest Answer, After a Whole Season of Asking (S04 - E48)

    Eleven nights asked pieces of one question. Tonight Vega wants the whole answer, and asks it straight out in the first minute: could we go there — the honest answer, not the kind one. 🌌✨ Qubit does not dodge this one. He has refused to settle three questions in a row, on purpose. A season that dodges its own question is unfinished. So we gather it all up. The wall: the nearest other sun is next door on any map and impossibly far to a ship. Nothing may cross the speed limit. Our farthest traveller reaches one whole day of light after nearly half a century. And a rocket must carry every gram it throws, so fuel needs fuel. The engines, from what has really flown to what may never be built: the sail that carries no fuel, the ship that rides a string of blasts, the fiercest fuel of which we can make only specks, and the shortcut whose page we deliberately left blank. The crossing: the ship that is also a home, the best moment that keeps moving further away, and the traveller who does not have to come home. AND THEN THEY ALL TURN OUT TO BE THE SAME THING. The distance never moved. The engine was never the enemy. TIME was. Every honest answer this season found was a different way of paying for time. SO HERE IS THE ANSWER, AND IT IS TWO ANSWERS, BECAUSE A MADE THING AND A PERSON ARE NOT ONE QUESTION. A made thing can almost certainly cross, given a decision and a very long patience. Something of ours has already gone. A person crossing is a real open question, held in pale pencil, shading toward the blank page — neither a promise nor a no. And the honest word for when is not soon, and most likely not us. BUT THE FIRST SMALL STEPS ARE NOT A PROPOSAL — THEY ARE ALREADY FLYING. Voyager 1, launched in 1977, is due to be 25,902,068,356 km (16,094,799,096 miles) from Earth on 18 November 2026 — one light-day, the first human-made object ever to reach that distance. It is still returning science. Engineers switched off its Low-energy Charged Particles experiment on 17 April 2026 after almost forty-nine years; both probes lose about 4 watts a year. And here is the warmest honest fact in this episode: the "Big Bang" power reconfiguration, a swap of power-hungry components for lower-power ones, was tested on Voyager 2 in May and June 2026, with Voyager 1 to follow. JPL says that if it works, the LECP could come back on, and the team hopes to keep an instrument alive on each probe into the 2030s. A switched-off sense that may yet return. And a real solar sail is finished. Applied Aerospace began building the membrane flight unit in November 2023 and completed all four quadrants in January 2026. It is larger than an Olympic swimming pool and 2.5 microns thick — thinner than a human hair. NASA's Space Storm Solar Sail Sentinel page says it will fly on NOAA's SOLAR-A mission in November 2029; NOAA's own May 2026 page is more cautious and calls the joint demonstration something being explored. So we say only what is certainly true: the sail is built, and it has a flight ahead of it. Meanwhile Breakthrough Starshot has been on hold since September 2025, and the Interstellar Probe stays complete, costed, decadal-recommended — and unbuilt. THEN THE HOMECOMING. From Alpha Centauri our Sun shines at about magnitude +0.5, the brightest star of the W of Cassiopeia, barely distorted from the shape we know. Somebody out there, someday, turns round and finds a small crooked pattern with one extra star on the end — same size as its neighbours, no brighter. That one is ours.     The Traveller Who Does Not Have to Come Home: We Have Been Sending Things to the Stars (S04 - E47)

    For ten nights Vega has pictured a person in the ship. Nobody ever asked her to. Tonight she arrives a bit cross, because she has worked out overnight that she was carrying an assumption for free — and when you take the somebody out, almost every wall of this season falls over at once. 🛰️✨ No air. No water. No dinner. No school. No children born on the way. Nobody to wake at the far end, and no lifetime to outlive. Last night's trap stops hurting too, because a made thing does not mind being passed and was never in a hurry. AND THIS PART IS INK. None of this is a proposal. It is what we have always actually done. Only a few months ago, people really did go farther from home than people have ever gone. The record had stood to Apollo 13 at 400,171 km since 1970 — until 6 April 2026, when the four-person Artemis II crew (Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch, and CSA's Jeremy Hansen) passed it on a far-side lunar flyby and reached about 406,771 km. That is genuinely wonderful, and it is worth cheering. It also makes the point better than any assertion could: the farthest any person has EVER been is a loop around our own companion and straight home again, inside a fortnight. Every single vehicle ever sent out past the worlds has been uncrewed. The farthest of them is still working. Voyager 1, launched in 1977, remains the most distant working object our species owns, and is due to reach one light-day from Earth on 18 November 2026. Its generators lose roughly four watts a year, and in April 2026 engineers switched off its Low-energy Charged Particles experiment after almost forty-nine years. A made thing does not mind the dark — but it does eventually run out, and its keepers are switching off one sense at a time to keep the voice going for as long as they can. THEN THE HONEST PRICE, IN THREE PARTS. THE SILENCE. Out there, nobody here can help it. A question takes years to arrive and the answer years to come back, so it must decide everything alone. NASA's own swarm study says the round-trip lag eliminates any practical control from Earth. That is a judging problem, not an engine problem, and it is nowhere near solved. THE WHISPER. The smaller you make it, the easier every part becomes except the very last one. For gram-scale probes the downlink is treated in the literature as possibly the determining problem — Messerschmitt et al. (ApJS, 2020) analyse the fundamental limits, and Taghavi et al. (2024) say the concept hinges primarily on getting the data home. A traveller that arrives and cannot tell anybody has not really arrived. THE QUESTION UNDERNEATH. If the made thing goes and every one of us stays — did we go? Serious people disagree. Sending made things instead of people is not cowardice, and wanting people to go is not vanity. Qubit will not settle it, because the answer depends on what a person thinks going is for. AND THEN THE QUIET PART. Right now nobody is on the way. Not a person, and not a made thing either. The leading successor to the Voyagers — the pragmatic Interstellar Probe, studied for four years by Johns Hopkins APL — sits complete and costed and unbuilt. In December 2024 the Solar and Space Physics decadal survey recommended, for the first time, that NASA develop a mission to interstellar space. The recommendation exists. The decision does not.
