    Seventy-Nine Makes Gold: The Number Inside Every Atom (S06 - E63)

    Last time we found a tiny heavy middle inside every atom and stopped there. Tonight Qubit opens it. 🪙 TWO KINDS OF PIECE. The middle is not one thing. It is two kinds of heavy piece packed together, almost exactly the same weight as each other — they differ by only about one part in seven hundred. One of them is the proton. The other is the neutron. ONLY ONE OF THEM COUNTS. The protons carry the count, and the count is the whole answer to what a thing is. The neutrons sit in the middle too and change none of it. ONE IS HYDROGEN, TWO IS HELIUM. Count one proton and you have hydrogen, the simplest thing there is and the first thing the universe ever made. Count two and you have helium. THE COUNTS INSIDE YOU. Six is carbon — the pencil lead, and every living thing including her. Seven and eight are the air in her chest. Twenty-six is the iron in her blood. Different counts of the same pieces, which is why a breath, a heartbeat and a gold coin are made of the same things. SEVENTY-NINE MAKES GOLD. Every piece of a gold coin has seventy-nine of the counting kind inside it, in every atom, and that number has not changed since the atoms were made. Nothing about how the coin looks decides it. The count decides it. CHANGE THE COUNT BY ONE. Add a single piece to the middle of a gold atom and it is not gold any more — it turns into the silver liquid you find in an old thermometer. Take one away instead and it is a different shiny metal again. One piece is the whole difference between them. THE HEAVIEST ATOM ANYONE HAS EVER MADE. It sits at one hundred and eighteen, and it lasts about a thousandth of a second — far shorter than a blink. You could count on your fingers every one of them that has ever existed. A ROW NOBODY HAS FILLED. Teams in more than one country are hunting the next two right now, and nobody has caught one yet.     The Middle That Is Almost Not There: If an Atom Were a Stadium (S06 - E62)

    Last time we stopped one cut short. Tonight Qubit makes the seventy-fifth cut, and the gold stops being gold. 🪙 A TINY MIDDLE IN A WIDE HAZE. What is inside is the strangest shape on the whole ladder: a tiny, heavy middle, and a wide, light haze spread around it. Almost all of an atom is haze. A PEA IN A STADIUM. If one atom were a whole stadium, its middle would be a single pea on the centre spot. The atom is about twenty thousand times across what its middle is. NEARLY ALL THE WEIGHT IS IN THE PEA. Grow one gold atom until it weighs as much as a twelve-year-old, and the entire haze around it would weigh about as much as the coin from last night. Everything else is in the pea. THE BULLETS THAT CAME BACK. The way anyone found that out was a guess that failed. The smallest, fastest bullets anyone had were fired at a sheet of gold beaten hundreds of times thinner than a page of paper. Everyone expected every one of them to sail straight through. About five in every hundred thousand swung hard aside, and some came almost straight back — as incredible as a huge shell bouncing off tissue paper. Only something tiny and heavy in the middle could do that. THE ELECTRON. The light piece that lives out in the haze gets its name tonight. THIS IS THE DRAWING, NOT THE THING. The haze is not little balls going round in rings. That famous picture is the wrong picture, and nobody can point to where an electron sits inside the haze. The soft teal disc we draw is a drawing, and we will say so every time. YOU HAVE NEVER TOUCHED ANYTHING. When you clap, no middle ever meets another middle — the hazes push each other away long before, and at stadium scale the two middles stay a stadium apart. So nothing you have ever touched has really been touched.     The Piece You Cannot Cut: Seventy-Four Cuts to the Last Piece of Gold (S06 - E61)

    Season Six starts small on purpose. Vega came to collect a whole new sky, and Qubit handed her one gold coin. 🪙 CUT IT IN HALF. Then cut the half in half, and keep going. Twenty cuts and the piece is smaller than a grain of sand. Thirty cuts and it is too small for your eye to find on the table. Forty cuts, and it is still gold, with the same yellow shine. THE LAST PIECE OF GOLD. At about the seventy-fourth cut, the piece you are holding is the last one that is still gold. The seventy-fifth cut is the one where it stops being gold. That last piece is real, and it is the same in every coin, every ring and every crown. MORE THAN EVERY BEACH. One small coin holds HUNDREDS OF TIMES MORE of those last pieces than there are grains of sand on every beach on Earth. Written out, the count has twenty-three figures. THE NAME IS WRONG. People reasoned their way to that last piece more than two thousand years ago, and they named it the uncuttable. It can be cut, and people have cut it. We keep the old name anyway: the atom. THIS IS THE DRAWING, NOT THE THING. An atom is far too small for light to draw, so every picture of one is a stand-in. This season Qubit will say, every time, where the drawing stops matching. THIS SEASON IS MOSTLY INK. Most of this ladder down is settled science. The ink runs out at the bottom rung, on a page nobody has written on yet, and we will show you exactly where. The biggest machine ever built for looking at the smallest things was switched off this summer, on purpose, to be rebuilt to look harder. It comes back in twenty thirty. THE SKY IS IN THE COIN. Every piece of gold in that coin was made in a star.     How Does It All End? The Honest Answer, and Why We Are the Lucky Ones (S05 - E60)

    Tonight we gather a whole season of endings into three piles and read them out. We teach nothing new on purpose. 🌌 THE THINGS WE LOVE. Everything that has ever happened still fits inside the first breath. A Sun bright enough to end the oceans, A THOUSAND MILLION YEARS from now. A cold ember nobody has ever seen, waiting seven thousand ages to exist. And the crash every child was promised, which turned out to be a coin flip ten thousand million years out. THE LONG FADE. Seven ages until the far islands drift past finding and the clues run out. About seventy ages until the final first light. Hundreds of ages of small red fires, of which NOT ONE HAS EVER DIED anywhere in the history of everything. And thousands of ages on, the furniture still standing in a dark with nothing left to gather. THE LAST LIGHT. A floor of a million million million million ages under the stuff you are made of, with a far bigger tank watching from twenty twenty-eight. A one with SIXTY-SEVEN ZEROS for the holes that leak — and are still gaining tonight. And the honest fork: keep fading, snap back, or tear, with nobody choosing. THEN THE ANSWER, SAID PLAINLY AND TWICE. Once in his words at the middle, and once in hers at the end. The near endings are real, they are dated, and they are unimaginably far away. The far ending is genuinely unchosen — and it is being taken down tonight, on two mountains, by two sets of eyes that owe each other nothing. And the scary question has a warm answer: we are alive in the brightest and richest and most knowable moment there will ever be. THE STRANGEST TRUE THING IN THE SEASON. The question of how it all ends can only be asked at the beginning. And we are at the beginning. THE PAGE WE HAVE BEEN SAVING. Back at the start we refused to sleep until the dark explained itself, and the show said a dark sky is proof the universe had a beginning — and that the dark was never empty. The same dark, asked the other question, gives three honest pages instead of one answer.     The Ending Nobody Has Picked Yet: Three Ways It Could End (S05 - E59)

    Every ending we have drawn this season quietly assumed one thing: that the room keeps roughly the shape it has now. 🌌 TONIGHT WE ADMIT THAT THE SHAPE OF THE ROOM IS THE ONE THING NOBODY HAS SETTLED. Three honest endings are on the table. Each one gets its number before it gets its name. KEEP FADING. What a steady push gives, and what every clock of the last six nights belongs to. This is the ending we have been drawing all season without saying so. SNAP BACK. What a push that weakens and turns to pulling would give. On the one model that puts a number to it, the stretching stops in about ELEVEN THOUSAND MILLION years, and everything is back together NEARLY TWENTY THOUSAND MILLION years from now. That is longer than the whole story so far — and it is the nearest number of the night, so we do not round it away from us. TEAR. This one needs a push stronger than any ever measured, and still growing. More than twenty thousand million years even on the borrowed push everybody quotes, and past a hundred thousand million on the strongest push anybody has actually seen. SO WHICH ONE IS OURS? It turns on one thing — the push — and the push is being argued about right now, in public, by the people best equipped to settle it. HERE IS THE HINT, AND HERE IS WHY IT IS ONLY A HINT. On the biggest map ever made, the push looks weaker now than it was long ago. That is strong enough to make careful people sit up. It is not strong enough to count. Nothing has crossed the bar. AND WE HAVE TO MARK OUR OWN PAGE. On the night about the push we said that if it keeps up, the expansion races faster and faster, on and on — and then we drew the sky as though the "if" were settled. It is not. Forever is no longer safe to say. One word gets a line through it, and the rest of that night stands. THE NUMBER MOVED TOO. Twice since the summer, both times down. We are telling you that instead of quietly using the old one. WHO IS LOOKING, AND WHEN? The map-makers finished their planned five-year survey in April 2026 with more than FORTY-SEVEN MILLION galaxies and quasars against a target of thirty-four million, are adding sky for two more years, and expect a first full answer next year. And since the end of June there is a sky-watcher in the south, a ten-year survey that after roughly one year of data should measure the push about as precisely — a second pair of eyes that owes the first nothing. THE LANDING. Not knowing the ending is not the same as knowing a bad one.     A Black Hole Leaks, and Nobody Has Ever Seen It Happen (S05 - E58)

    Nothing escapes a black hole. And yet a black hole leaks. 🕳️ BOTH OF THOSE ARE TRUE, and the gap between them is the whole episode. Something comes away from just outside the rim — fainter than any candle, colder than anything ever built — and it costs the hole weight. A HOLE THAT KEEPS LOSING WEIGHT SHRINKS. And at the very end it does not fade out quietly. It finishes in one bright burst. HERE IS THE HONEST PART. Nobody has ever seen this happen. Not once. So we do not write it in ink — we write it in heavy pencil, and we say which it is. It is what falls out when the two best-tested descriptions of the world are held against each other at the edge of a hole, it is more than fifty years old, and very nearly every working physicist expects it anyway. NOW THE WAITS. They are the longest numbers this show has ever spoken out loud, so we speak them as zeros. A hole our own star could leave takes a one with SIXTY-SEVEN ZEROS of years to empty itself. A heavier star's hole: seventy. The giant at the middle of an island of stars: eighty-seven. The biggest anybody has ever weighed: ninety-nine. TWO NIGHTS AGO the longest clock we spoke ran about nineteen zeros. Tonight is forty-eight further zeros — and every single one of them means ten times again. THE BEST SURPRISE RUNS BACKWARDS. Everything in space gets slower as it gets bigger. Not this. Halve a black hole and it finishes eight times sooner. The smallest ones go fastest, and the ending runs away with itself right at the end. AND THE WARMEST FACT IN THE ACT. Not one of those clocks has started. The sky itself is still warmer than every black hole in it, so tonight every hole out there is GAINING, not leaving. A hole would have to be lighter than half our own moon to be winning yet. The leaving has not begun for a single one of them — and you will never feel a moment of it in your life. SO HOW WOULD ANYBODY EVER CATCH ONE? By watching the whole sky for that final burst. A 2025 all-sky search came up empty, and empty is a number too: it says fewer than about 181 such bursts per cubic parsec per year, sharpening a previous limit of roughly 3,400.     The Stuff That Might Not Last: Nobody Has Ever Seen One Break (S05 - E57)

    Nobody has ever seen a single piece of ordinary matter break. Not once. ⚛️ AND PEOPLE HAVE TRIED VERY HARD. That is the whole episode in one sentence, and it is stranger than it sounds — because most of the theories that tie the forces of nature together say the pieces *must* come apart eventually. SO HOW DO YOU WATCH FOR SOMETHING THAT MIGHT NEVER HAPPEN? You fill a tank with fifty thousand tonnes of pure water. You sink it deep under a mountain, where nothing else can reach it. You line the walls with great glass bulbs that can catch a single flash of light. And then you wait. THIRTY YEARS OF WATCHING. Not one flash. HERE IS THE PART THAT SURPRISES EVERYONE. That silence is not a failure. It is a measurement. When nothing happens for thirty years in a tank that big, you have learned something exact — and this is the episode's favourite idea: nothing happening is a result. AND THE RESULT IS A NUMBER. Every piece of you is good for at least a million million million million ages of the universe. That is a floor, not a guess. It is written in ink. WHAT THAT MEANS FOR YOU, TONIGHT. Even at the fastest rate the floor still allows, your whole body loses at most one piece every million years. You are, for every purpose you will ever have, permanent. BUT WE STILL DO NOT KNOW IF THEY GO AT ALL. This is the cleanest blank page of the season, and we say so plainly. The tidiest early guesses have already been crossed out by the tanks. The ones still standing sit just past where the tank can reach. And a few say the pieces last forever. A BLANK PAGE WITH A DATE ON IT. Because on this show, "nobody knows" is never the end of a sentence — it comes with who is looking, with what, and when. A far bigger tank, about five times the water, is being finished right now to push that floor roughly ten times higher. It starts watching in twenty twenty-eight. AND ONE MORE THING, SAID OUT LOUD. That date is one year later than we promised you at the start of this season. It moved, so we say it moved.     The Only Things Still Standing: What Is Left After the Last Star Goes Out (S05 - E56)

    After the last star goes out, the sky does not go empty. It keeps its furniture. 🌌 THE CLOCK LANDS FIRST. The last small red fire goes out thousands of ages of the universe from now — thousands of times everything that has ever happened. That number is written in pencil, and we say so, because nobody can time a fire that has not been lit yet. THEN THE PART NOBODY EXPECTS. Dark is not empty. When the lights go out, the room is still furnished — and you have already met every piece of it. FIVE KINDS STAY STANDING. The embers of dead stars. The city-sized remnants. The black holes. The failed stars that never lit at all. And the dark worlds. That is the whole list. AND HERE IS WHY IT IS INK, NOT GUESSWORK. Every one of those five exists tonight and has been seen: photographed, heard, timed, counted, or caught drifting. We are not predicting new things into the far future. We are counting things that are already here. WELL OVER NINE IN EVERY TEN STARS END AS EMBERS. Rounded down, deliberately. The heavy ones — the city-sized remnants and the black holes — are the rare ones. THEN THE LONGEST CLOCK THIS SHOW HAS EVER SET. Hundreds of millions of ages at the least before an island of stars comes apart. Not an explosion: near misses. Star passes star, one gets shoved, and over that unimaginable stretch most of an island's pieces are flung out into the dark between the islands. A tenth at most falls inward instead, to the black hole that ate the centre. WHAT IS LEFT OF AN ISLAND. A cold scattered drift, and one black hole. Both assumptions behind that clock are named on screen, and the whole thing is said in pencil. THE ONE COMPARISON THAT MAKES IT LAND. Season 3 had a long dark too — the stretch before the first stars lit. We hold the two side by side, and the difference is the whole point: that dark was full of gas gathering toward a dawn. This one has nothing left to gather. The gas was spent and locked away across the whole crowded chapter in between. SO HERE IS THE LANDING. Everything that will still be standing then is standing already. Tonight. Most of it is inside stars that are still lit right now.
