Episode 1: Why Nonprofits and AI, Why Me, Why Now

In this first episode of Navigating the mAIze, I introduce myself and lay out exactly what this weekly show is going to be. I’m Sean, founder and principal of Magnolia Philanthropic Services, a boutique senior philanthropic advisory firm based in Miami. I’ve spent over 25 years inside nonprofit development — as a CEO, a Chief Development Officer, and now as a senior advisor working with organizations across the country on major gifts strategy, capital campaigns, and donor engagement. In this episode, I cover: •My background in nonprofit development, and why I started building with AI rather than just talking about it •The real state of AI adoption in the nonprofit sector right now — where it’s genuinely helping, and where the hype has outpaced the reality •Why fundraising is fundamentally relationship work, and where AI tools help deepen those relationships versus where they risk hollowing them out •What you can expect every week: real workflows, sector-specific conversations, guest interviews with development leaders, and honest talk about the parts of this shift nobody likes to say out loud This isn’t a show about AI for its own sake, and it’s not built by vendors selling you software. It’s practitioner to practitioner — one practical, usable idea per episode, in about 15 minutes. New episodes every week. If you’re a development director, executive director, board member, or anyone who cares about nonprofits doing more with what they have, subscribe and come back next week. Source cited in this episode: Adoption and impact statistics referenced come from The 2026 Nonprofit AI Adoption Report, jointly published by Virtuous and Fundraising.AI (February 2026), a benchmark study of 346 nonprofits. About the host: Sean is the founder of Magnolia Philanthropic Services (magnoliaphilanthropy.net), advising nonprofits nationwide on development strategy, major gifts, and campaign counsel.
