Should Philanthropy Stay Out of Politics? | One More Thing with Quanda Allen and Meredith Hanley

Should philanthropy stay out of politics? Quanda Allen and Meredith Hanley revisit their conversation with MTV co-founder and former Viacom CEO Tom Freston to look at how philanthropy, public policy, and advocacy work together. The question gets more complicated once you separate partisan politics from policy: the budgets, laws, and government decisions that determine whether millions of people can get healthcare, education, economic opportunity, and basic services. Tom’s global work spans hospitals, schools, media in Afghanistan, and nearly two decades of leadership with the ONE Campaign. It’s a clear example of direct giving and policy advocacy working side by side. In this 1 More Thing episode, we ask when charitable giving is enough, when policy becomes essential, and why some of philanthropy’s most important impact happens far from a ribbon cutting or a name on a building. This isn’t a conversation about partisan allegiance. It’s about whether donors who want lasting change can afford to ignore the public decisions shaping the problems they hope to solve. 📖 Tom’s memoir: Unplugged: Adventures from MTV to Timbuktu 🎧 Full interview with Tom Freston: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NuHjBpG_M_w 🌐 Show notes and resources: https://thephilanthropistspodcast.org ✉️ hello@thephilanthropistspodcast.org CHAPTERS 00:00 Tom Freston on giving with curiosity 01:04 Setting the stage: Tom’s story 04:42 Philanthropy as refuge and meaning 07:29 Travel, proximity, and the gap year 11:07 Afghanistan and the people behind the work 16:09 Fired from Viacom: designing a second act 20:19 Purpose, identity, and life after a title 23:38 Five steps for a second-act transition 26:52 Time and talent as philanthropic capital 30:05 The ONE Campaign and PEPFAR 31:36 Should philanthropy engage policy? 36:09 Does scale distort how we see impact? 38:36 Humility vs. imposter syndrome 40:29 How to act on your own curiosity 43:15 What stayed with us Subscribe for honest conversations about giving with purpose. #Philanthropy #TomFreston #ONECampaign

MTV Co-Founder Tom Freston: What the World Taught Him About Giving

MTV co-founder and former Viacom CEO Tom Freston on getting fired twice, rebuilding media in Afghanistan, and nearly two decades chairing the ONE Campaign. Before MTV, Tom was running a clothing import business between New Delhi and Kabul. It made millions, then disappeared almost overnight when the Soviets invaded Afghanistan and new US quotas cut off imports from India. He was 33, back in New York, and in debt. What came next: helping build MTV into a network in 75 countries, running Viacom, making an offer to buy Facebook in 2005 (Zuckerberg said no), being blocked from buying YouTube, and getting fired over MySpace. Then the third chapter. An orphanage, hospital, clinic, and school in Burma. Twelve years helping build Afghanistan's leading independent TV network. And after the Taliban returned, turning that network into a classroom for girls shut out of school, with nearly 2,000 episodes of biology, math, and more. We talk with Tom about why injustice moves people more than pity, why his biggest philanthropic risk has been his time, and why he thinks you should give to the things you're most curious about.
