Ye Are the Salt of the Earth

A withered hand is healed in front of hostile eyes. Twelve ordinary men are named apostles after a night of prayer. A mountainside crowd hears words that turn the world's values upside down. In a synagogue, Jesus heals a man's withered hand on the sabbath, asking first whether it is lawful to do good or to do evil on that day — the Pharisees' answer is silence, followed by a plot with the Herodians to destroy him. Great multitudes from Galilee, Judea, Jerusalem, Idumea, beyond Jordan, and even Tyre and Sidon press in to be healed, so many that Jesus keeps a small ship ready to escape the crowd. After spending a whole night in prayer on a mountain, Jesus calls his twelve disciples to him and names them apostles. Coming down to a level place, he heals the multitude, then teaches the Beatitudes — blessed are the poor in spirit, those who mourn, the meek, the merciful, the pure in heart, the peacemakers — followed by Luke's matching woes to the rich, the full, and the laughing. He tells his disciples they are the salt of the earth and the light of the world, not to be hidden but set on a hill for all to see. Episode 9 of 50 in Walking with Jesus: A Harmony of the Gospels — a complete, chronological reading of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John in the King James Version (KJV), pure scripture, no commentary. Today's Scripture: Matthew 12:9-14 & Mark 3:1-6 & Luke 6:6-11; Matthew 12:15-21 & Mark 3:7-12; Mark 3:13-19 & Luke 6:12-16; Matthew 5:1-12 & Luke 6:17-23; Luke 6:24-26; Matthew 5:13-16

Follow Me, and I Will Make You Fishers of Men

A blind push toward home gets a long-distance miracle. Four fishermen walk away from their nets. A demon recognizes Jesus before anyone else does. Leaving Judea, Jesus returns to Galilee in the power of the Spirit, and in Cana again performs a sign from a distance — healing a nobleman's son in Capernaum without ever traveling there himself, convincing the whole household to believe. Jesus settles in Capernaum by the sea, fulfilling Isaiah's word about Galilee of the Gentiles, and begins to preach that the kingdom of heaven is at hand. Walking by the Sea of Galilee, he calls Simon and Andrew, then James and John, away from their nets to become fishers of men — Luke adds a miraculous catch of fish so large it begins to sink two boats, which is what finally brings Simon to his knees. In the Capernaum synagogue on the sabbath, a man with an unclean spirit cries out, recognizing Jesus as the Holy One of God, and is cast out with a word. That same day, Jesus heals Simon's mother-in-law of a fever, and by evening the whole city gathers at the door, bringing the sick and the possessed to be healed. Episode 6 of 50 in Walking with Jesus: A Harmony of the Gospels — a complete, chronological reading of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John in the King James Version (KJV), pure scripture, no commentary. Today's Scripture: Luke 4:14; John 4:43-45; John 4:46-54; Matthew 4:13-17 & Mark 1:14-15; Matthew 4:18-22 & Mark 1:16-20 & Luke 5:1-11; Mark 1:21-28 & Luke 4:31-37; Matthew 8:14-17 & Mark 1:29-34 & Luke 4:38-41
