    The Bad Thing Was Still Bad

    What do we do with the parts of our story that were genuinely bad? In Genesis 50, Joseph looks back at everything his brothers did to him and says: “You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good.” But that does not mean the harm was secretly good. In this episode of The Messy Middle, I’m reflecting on Joseph’s story, the danger of turning pain into a Christian cliché, and the difference between saying “God needed this to happen” and believing that even the worst parts of our lives are not beyond redemption. Sometimes the silver lining is obvious. Sometimes it is barely there. Sometimes all we can say is: I don’t know what this becomes yet. The bad thing was still bad. But it did not get the final word.     When People Are The Problem

    What do you do when someone you love has hurt you? Do you say something, let it go, set a boundary, try again… and what happens when they still won’t listen? In this episode of The Messy Middle, I’m reading Matthew 18:15–20 and thinking about conflict, accountability, forgiveness and the very human mess of trying to repair relationships. We’ll look at why Jesus tells us to go to someone privately first, what “you have regained that one” might reveal about the real goal of confrontation, why Matthew writing about “tax collectors” is slightly ironic, and what “where two or three are gathered” looks like when you read it in the middle of a passage about broken relationships. Because loving someone doesn’t always mean pretending everything is fine, forgiveness doesn’t always restore trust, and sometimes reconciliation simply isn’t something we can achieve on our own. But Jesus never promises to keep us out of those uncomfortable messy middles. He promises to be there with us in them.

    Who Even Am I?! | Exodus 3:1-15

    Who even am I to do this? It’s the question Moses asks when God calls him from the burning bush—and, if I’m honest, it’s a question I ask every time I sit down with a Bible and a microphone. In this episode of The Messy Middle, we’re reading Exodus 3:1–15 and reflecting on holy ground in ordinary places, the God who calls us by name while knowing our entire history, and what happens when our “Who am I?” meets God’s “I AM.” God doesn’t answer Moses with a motivational speech or convince him that he’s secretly more impressive than he thinks. He simply says, “I will be with you.” Perhaps we don’t need to feel completely qualified before we show up. Perhaps we just need to remember who is going with us.     This Is All You've Got | Romans 12:1-8

    This week in The Messy Middle, we’re reading Romans 12:1–8 and thinking about what it actually means to offer our lives to God. Not some future, more polished version of ourselves. Not the person we think we should be. The life we have now. We talk about transformation, individuality, discipleship, the body of Christ, different gifts, and what it might look like to be Jesus’ hands and feet in ordinary life. Because becoming more like Christ doesn’t mean becoming less like yourself. And being part of one body doesn’t mean you have to be everything. Sometimes we look at our lives and think, “This is all I’ve got.” Maybe the invitation is to hear that differently. This is all you’ve got. So what are you going to do with it?

    It's Not All About You | Psalm 67

    What if God’s blessing was never meant to stop with us? In this episode of The Messy Middle: Scripture for Real Life, I’m reading Psalm 67 and reflecting on what it means to receive God’s goodness without turning it into something we simply hold onto. We talk about blessing as a launchpad rather than a full stop, justice and equity, gratitude without toxic positivity, caring for people beyond our own little circles, and the uncomfortable question of whether what God gives us is supposed to flow somewhere next. This is not about having all the answers or fixing the whole world. It’s about asking: What has God already placed in my hands?What am I holding onto?What is God doing through me? Because maybe we pray for rain… and then build ponds where God intended rivers. Welcome to The Messy Middle - a space for Scripture, real life, messy faith and the bits in between.

    We All Wobble | Matthew 14:22-33

    Peter stepped out of the boat, walked on water… and then had a wobble. In Episode 4 of The Messy Middle: Scripture for Real Life, I’m reflecting on Matthew 14:22–33 and what this story says about fear, doubt, calling, rest and the storms we all face. Peter had Jesus right there in front of him and still got scared. Jesus withdrew to rest. The disciples found themselves in a storm even though they were exactly where they were supposed to be. Maybe wobbling doesn’t mean we’ve failed. Maybe the storm isn’t proof that something has gone wrong. And maybe faith is less about never being afraid, and more about knowing who to call for when we are.

    Stay Thirsty | Isaiah 55:1-5

    What are you using to fill the space only Jesus can fill? In this episode of The Messy Middle: Scripture for Real Life, I’m reflecting on Isaiah 55:1–5 and the invitation to come thirsty. I found Jesus in my twenties, and I remember what it felt like to know something was missing without knowing what I was looking for. We can try to fill that void with relationships, work, attention, achievement, being needed or whatever gives us something immediate and tangible. But eventually, the thirst returns. Isaiah offers an invitation that cannot be bought or earned. Jesus offers living water, not a transaction. Staying thirsty does not mean Jesus fails to satisfy us. It means recognising that our relationship with Him is ongoing. We keep returning to the source rather than expecting one encounter, one prayer or one powerful moment to sustain us forever. In this episode, I also reflect on the Samaritan woman at the well, the temptation to make faith transactional, and what it means to keep coming back to Jesus in the middle of a life that is still messy.     When prayer feels impossible, weakness feels exposing, and everyone else seems to be doing faith better than you, Romans 8 reminds us that prayer is not a performance. In this episode of The Messy Middle: Scripture for Real Life, we explore Romans 8:26–39 and what it means to be met by the Spirit in our weakness, changed as we follow Jesus, and held by a love from which nothing can separate us. This is not a promise that life will always feel good or that faith will keep us out of every valley. It is the assurance that we never enter one alone.
