Let's Talk.... Real Life Stories (Anthony)

Coming home one day to be told your marriage is over is a moment that changes everything. For Anthony, the decision wasn’t his. He was completely shocked when his wife told him she was leaving, and his darkest point came when she moved out with their children and he suddenly found himself alone in the family home. In this episode of Let's Talk Divorce, Anthony shares his experience of divorce from the perspective of the person who was left. He talks openly about the shock of the separation, continuing to live together after the decision had been made, and what it felt like when his children were no longer living with him every day. We also talk about one of the things many separated parents find incredibly difficult: another man coming into his children’s lives. But Anthony’s story doesn’t end there. He talks about rebuilding his life, finding love again and creating a wonderful blended family. Perhaps most importantly, he shares how his relationship with his ex has changed over time and how they have reached a place where they now get on. In this episode: The shock of being told your marriage is over when you didn’t see it coming What it was like continuing to live together after deciding to separate The day Anthony’s wife and children moved out and suddenly being alone Adjusting to no longer seeing your children every day Dealing with another man becoming part of your children’s lives Navigating co-parenting after a painful separation Rebuilding your life when divorce wasn’t what you wanted Finding love again after divorce The realities of creating a blended family How Anthony and his ex moved from separation and hurt to a much better relationship Why where you are in the early days of divorce doesn’t have to be where you end up If you’re in the early days of separation and struggling to imagine a time when life might feel good again, Anthony’s story is a reminder that the way things look right now isn’t necessarily how they will always look. Let's Talk.....Money. How Much Does Divorce Cost?

Divorce can be expensive, but how much does it actually cost? And is trying to keep your legal fees as low as possible always the best approach? In this episode of Let's Talk Divorce, I break down the real costs of getting divorced in England and Wales, including solicitors, mediation, barristers and McKenzie Friends. I also share examples of what people have actually spent and explore why some divorces cost a few thousand pounds while others run into tens of thousands. We look at practical ways to keep costs under control, but also why spending money on the right legal advice could leave you significantly better off financially. And I explore another important question: what is the cost of staying in an unhappy or toxic marriage? In this episode: How much it actually costs to get divorced in England and Wales What solicitors charge per hour and how legal bills can quickly add up The costs of mediation, barristers and McKenzie Friends Real examples of what people have spent on divorce Practical ways to reduce unnecessary legal fees Why involving solicitors in every disagreement with your ex can become expensive How to use the right professionals at the right time Why the cheapest divorce isn't necessarily the best financial outcome When spending more on legal advice could help you secure a better settlement How to decide whether pursuing more money is worth the additional legal costs The hidden financial, emotional and personal costs of staying in an unhappy marriage Why it's important to consider the cost of both staying and leaving Whether you're considering separation, just starting the divorce process or already negotiating a financial settlement, this episode will help you understand the potential costs, avoid unnecessary spending and make more informed decisions about your future. Let's Talk.... Real Life Stories (dad P)

Getting the outcome you want in family court doesn't necessarily mean the conflict is over. For some separated parents, the challenges continue long after the legal proceedings have ended, particularly when communication is difficult and children are caught in the middle. In this episode of Let's Talk Divorce, I share the anonymous story of a father who unexpectedly found himself becoming the main carer for his three-year-old daughter following a difficult marriage breakdown. His experience highlights the challenges of navigating the family courts, the assumptions sometimes made about fathers, and the difficult balance between protecting your child and supporting their relationship with their other parent. I also explore how ongoing conflict can affect family life, why setting boundaries is so important, and how it's possible to build a positive future even after an incredibly difficult separation. In this episode: How one father unexpectedly became the main carer for his young daughter The assumptions about mothers and fathers that he encountered during the family court process Why maintaining stability and familiar routines matters for children during divorce The importance of keeping records when dealing with a difficult separation Why getting the outcome you want in court doesn't always mean the conflict ends Managing last-minute changes, difficult communication and ongoing co-parenting challenges The difficult balance between protecting children and avoiding criticism of their other parent How to talk to children when you're concerned about your ex's behaviour Helping children feel safe without making them responsible for adult problems The financial and emotional pressures of becoming a single parent Building resilience and finding positives after a difficult divorce Why divorce doesn't have to prevent children from growing up happy, confident and secure Whether you're navigating a difficult divorce, struggling with ongoing conflict with your ex, or worried about how separation is affecting your children, this episode offers a different perspective on what it really means to put children first. It's also a reminder that whilst you can't always control your ex's behaviour, you can take practical steps to protect your wellbeing, support your children and build a more positive future. Let's Talk.... Difficult Conversations

Difficult conversations are almost impossible to avoid during separation and divorce. Money, the house, arrangements for the children, boundaries, holidays. Even conversations that should be fairly straightforward can quickly turn into an argument. In this episode of Let's Talk Divorce, I explore how to approach difficult conversations in a way that gives them the best chance of staying productive. From preparing before you start and keeping the conversation focused, to dealing with personal digs, over-explaining and knowing when it's time to stop engaging. I also look at an important shift that can make these conversations much easier: you don't need your ex to agree with you in order to communicate clearly or put a boundary in place. In this episode: How to prepare for a difficult conversation before you have it Why deciding what you actually need to achieve can stop conversations going off track Choosing the right time, and the right way, to discuss difficult subjects Why trying to make your ex understand your point of view can sometimes make things worse How to avoid being pulled into old arguments and personal accusations Why you don't need to respond to every comment, criticism or accusation How to stop over-explaining and defending your decisions What boundaries around communication actually look like How to recognise when a conversation is no longer productive Dealing with angry, lengthy or provocative messages from your ex What to do when the other person simply won't engage How to keep conversations about your children focused on what they need Why not participating in unnecessary conflict isn't the same as avoiding conflict Whether you're preparing to separate, going through a divorce or trying to co-parent with an ex who can be difficult to communicate with, this episode will give you practical ways to approach difficult conversations, reduce unnecessary conflict and feel more in control of how you respond. Let's Talk.... Child Arrangements and Shared Care (with a solicitor)

When parents separate, deciding what happens with the children can be one of the hardest parts to work through. Where will they live? How much time will they spend with each parent? And what happens when you simply can't agree? In this episode of Let's Talk Divorce, I’m joined by Rebecca Ranson from Nicholls Solicitors to talk about child arrangements after separation and divorce, and some of the questions parents commonly have about how these decisions are made. We discuss whether the courts assume it should be 50/50, how the courts approach child arrangements and what parental responsibility means in practice. We also look at some of the more difficult situations parents can find themselves dealing with, including working around shifts and what happens when a child says they don't want to go to the other parent's home. In this episode: What parental responsibility means after separation or divorceHow child arrangements are decided when parents separateHow the courts approach shared careWhether shared care automatically means children spend equal time with each parentWhether a child's wishes and feelings are taken into accountHow children's ages and circumstances can affect the consideration given to their viewsCreating workable arrangements when one parent works shifts or irregular hoursWhat happens when parents can't agree on arrangementsWhat to do when your child refuses to go to the other parent's houseWhen parents may need legal advice about child arrangements If you're trying to work out arrangements for your children after separation, this episode will give you a clearer understanding of some of the legal considerations involved and the questions you may need to think about when deciding what happens next. Let's Talk....About How to Tell Your Spouse You Want a Divorce

Telling your spouse that you want a divorce can feel like one of the hardest conversations you'll ever have. Even when you've thought about leaving for months, or years. Actually saying the words can feel very different. In this episode of Let's Talk Divorce, I talk about how to prepare for that conversation, how to approach it clearly and respectfully, and what to expect afterwards. Let's Talk.... Divorce Guilt

Divorce guilt can show up at every stage of separation. Before you leave, while you're going through divorce and long after the relationship itself has ended. In this episode of Let's Talk Divorce, I explore the different ways guilt can affect the decisions we make. From feeling guilty about leaving and worrying about the impact on your children, to taking responsibility for your ex's emotions, feeling bad about setting boundaries, and even experiencing guilt when life starts to feel good again. I also look at an important question: does feeling guilty actually mean you've done something wrong? In this episode: The difference between feeling guilty and actually doing something wrong The guilt that can keep you stuck when you're considering leaving Worrying about the impact of separation on your children Guilt when you're the person who chose to end the marriage Blaming yourself when the decision to divorce wasn't yours Why guilt can affect the decisions you make during divorce Feeling guilty for setting boundaries with your ex Co-parenting guilt and taking responsibility for things you can't control Why you might feel guilty when you finally start feeling happy again How to recognise when responsibility is genuinely yours - and when you're carrying something that isn't Whether you're quietly questioning your marriage, going through a divorce or trying to co-parent and rebuild your life afterwards, this episode will help you look at the guilt you're carrying and ask whether it really belongs to you.
