The Feast of Saints Simon and Jude, Apostles

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. None of our Lord’s Apostles suffered particularly positive fates in the time after His Ascension. John had it best, dying of natural causes in Ephesus, but that was only after a lengthy exile on the island of Patmos. James the Great…

The Twenty-First Sunday after Trinity (Reformation Sunday)

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. If you have faith like a mustard seed, you will enter the kingdom of heaven. This is true because salvation is not dependent upon the strength of one’s faith. The deathbed convert and the lifelong believer alike are granted to enter…

The Feast of Saint Luke the Evangelist

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. In today’s Gospel, our Lord says: “The harvest is truly great, but the laborers are few” (Luke 10:2a). Therefore it is right and good that this day we join the Church throughout the ages in giving thanks to the Lord of the harvest…

The Wednesday of the Nineteenth Week after Trinity

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. In today’s Gospel, Christ uses a question about fasting to reveal Himself as the Church’s Bridegroom. If one does not recognize Christ as the Bridegroom who has come to lay down His life for His bride, then he will never understand…

The Wednesday of the Eighteenth Week after Trinity

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Our readings for today leave us with a tension. The Apostle says in the Epistle: “Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers” (1 Corinthians 6:14a). And our Lord tells us in the Gospel that a mingling of the sons of the kingdom…

    The Eighteenth Sunday after Trinity

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Our Lord tells us in today’s Gospel that the first and great commandment is this: “You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind” (Matthew 27:37, cf. Deuteronomy 6:5). This is God’s…

The Wednesday of the Seventeenth Week after Trinity

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. The question of why some are saved and not others is a cross which all Christians must bear. In fact, this question of why some and not others is known in theological terms as the Crux Theologorum, or the cross of the theologian.…

    The Seventeenth Sunday after Trinity

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. The apostle Paul begins today’s Epistle with an exhortation to “walk worthy of the calling with which you were called” (Ephesians 4:1). He goes on to explain that lowliness, gentleness, patience (or literally, “longsuffering”), and…
