Marketers Barely Managing

Rachel Moore

Surviving Mondays together. Every Monday, we marketers face a new week with the same old challenges: colleagues who think they know our craft as well as we do, managers who drop random ideas as new strategies to execute, technologies threatening our jobs, and audiences waiting in their basements for us to make a mistake. We vent. We relate. We commiserate. We get through another Monday. Together. Enjoy the show. Dabble into the WhatsApp community. Survive this week being all the marketer you can be.

Just Because We Can, Should We? AI and the Human Story with Laura Bengs | (a CMWorld mini-series)

Send us Fan Mail Rachel welcomes her CMI mentorship mentee, Laura Bengs of Northwestern Mutual, to the Marketers Managing mini-series, recorded live from the trade show floor at Content Marketing World. They trade stories about what a good mentorship looks like, then dig into the topic every marketer is sick of and still using: AI. Laura shares how her leadership is piloting AI in place of freelance writers, how it saved her two hours on a leadership summary, and why it still can’t replace the human story. They also get into the “AI made this” side-eye from audiences, kids who spot AI slop on sight, and the question every team is wrestling with: just because we can, should we? Join the WhatsApp community and tell us where you land on the AI balance. And... hang in there. The Great Ungate Debate (or Ungate-Gate)

Send us Fan Mail Breaking news recorded Monday, November 2nd: Reddit is moving threads behind login-only viewing so AI search can’t crawl them, a major shakeup for SEO/AEO/GEO and zero-click LLM results that have been heavily surfacing Reddit.  Rachel connects this to an upcoming Marketers Managing bonus episode with Alyssa McManus, who argues marketers may need to make website resources ungated so LLMs can index and cite them—despite the traditional lead-gen logic of gating content to capture emails.  Rachel walks through the tradeoff: if AI answers reduce clicks, gated assets may be harder to access anyway, and ungated long-form content could increase visibility in AI summaries. She suggests testing gated vs. ungated versions and measuring outcomes. 00:00 Monday Kickoff 00:23 Reddit Blocks AI Crawlers 01:33 Why Ungating Matters 02:49 Gated Content Tradeoffs 04:01 Ungated SEO Strategy 05:26 Test Gated vs Ungated 06:24 Ungate Gate Wrapup 06:45 Community Call to Action Support the show This is our cue to say, "But wait, there's Moore!" Team Management and Content Engineering with Tricia Reynolds | (a CMWorld mini-series)

Send us Fan Mail We’re back at Content Marketing World in Denver with Tricia Reynolds from WP Engine, and y’all—after lunch, we’re still managing just fine (chocolate may be involved).  We talk about how AI is in basically every marketing conversation, but the real time-suck isn’t the first draft—it’s the “gray space” of reviews, legal, handoffs, and workflow.  Tricia shares how she stepped into leading the team six months ago, brought strategy into a strong writing team, and even added a “content engineer” role to map the process, find redundancies, and manage the change-management fatigue that comes with new tools.  And yes, we go full circle back to podcasts—because people want humans talking to humans, not AI hosts—and how WP Engine might bring the WordPress community to life through a show. 00:00 Pre Show Setup 00:00 Meet Tricia Reynolds 00:00 Why Podcasts Win 01:00 Conference Vibes 01:48 AI And Workflow Reality 03:04 Content Engineer Role 04:51 Change Management Fatigue 06:34 Why Podcasts Win 07:59 WP Engine Podcast Vision 09:20 WordPress Community Love 10:39 Wrap Up And Thanks Support the show This is our cue to say, "But wait, there's Moore!" Look for the Helpers (Engineers & Otherwise)

Send us Fan Mail It’s Monday, I’m in full workout-mode (yes, paw print leggings) because today is my first workout in three weeks after getting knocked out by that brutal chest-cold thing post–Content Marketing World in Denver, and I’m finally getting back to it.  I talk about why I wait the full two weeks before running to the doctor (and why I don’t rush antibiotics), then share the one thing that’s helped me stay consistent with exercise: VR workouts (boxing/swinging bats, music, and a coach who feels like a personal trainer).  That rolls right into this week’s Marketers Managing episode with Tricia Reynolds, where she describes a “content engineer” who audits processes, trims inefficiencies, and gives the team time back—basically the same kind of helper I have in my headset.  The big takeaway: look for the helpers, appreciate them, and be one. 00:00 Workout Monday Check In 00:25 Sick Break And Recovery 01:04 Antibiotics And Hustle Culture 02:37 VR Workout Solution 04:21 Content Engineer And AI 06:44 Helpers Make It Easier 07:25 Community And New App 08:30 Be The Helpers Closing Support the show This is our cue to say, "But wait, there's Moore!" Brainstorming Beyond Prompts with Jorie Mark | Marketers Managing (a CMWorld mini-series)

Send us Fan Mail At Content Marketing World, Rachel Moore interviews Jorie Mark of Life Extension about creativity, AI, and collaborative brainstorming.  Jorie highlights a Procter & Gamble keynote emphasizing AI as a tool and the importance of human touch, contrasting it with a prior year’s unsettling “AI doppelganger” theme.  She explains that AI can surface existing ideas but real progress comes from dialogue with trusted people, and she shares her personal brainstorming habit of taking a short walk. As director of a copy team at a supplement brand, Jorie describes an intentional monthly process pairing copywriters with designers for new product launches, using scientific briefs and competitive research to generate concepts together, such as a magnesium “OMG/MG” periodic-table-style idea.  They emphasize creating psychologically safe, inclusive sessions that accommodate introverts and neurodivergent contributors, and Jorie reassures her team that “robots aren’t taking over.” Follow Jorie on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/joriemark/ 00:00 Creativity Needs Safety 00:10 Conference Kickoff 00:37 AI Keynote Takeaways 01:56 Brainstorming Beyond Prompts 03:02 Touch Grass Ideas 03:52 Team Brainstorm Workflow 04:59 Cross Functional Pairing 06:23 OMG Magnesium Example 07:58 Making Space For Introverts 09:24 Robots Aren't Taking Over 10:10 Wrap Up And Thanks Support the show This is our cue to say, "But wait, there's Moore!" Be Creative On Demand!

Send us Fan Mail Rachel Moore records while sick after Content Marketing World and a planned break in Colorado, joking that announcing a break invited the “local crud,” which her husband also caught.  She reflects on how marketers are often expected to be “creative on demand” on calls, comparing it to asking comedians to be funny instantly, and notes that marketing includes many roles beyond idea generation.  She shares that stepping away—camping, touching grass, taking a walk—often boosts her creativity, and that collaborative brainstorming with diverse teammates helps spark better ideas through prompts and the “no bad idea” mindset.  She previews an upcoming bonus episode in the Marketers Managing miniseries featuring guest Jorie Mark discussing team brainstorming, and invites listeners to join via a WhatsApp link. 00:00 Sick Day Check In 00:20 How Breaks Make You Sick 01:46 Creative On Demand Pressure 02:19 Comedians And Marketers 03:23 Marketing Is Not One Thing 04:54 Brainstorming Sparks Creativity 06:25 Jump Higher Expectations 07:12 Wrap Up And Community Plug Support the show This is our cue to say, "But wait, there's Moore!" Nurture Your Network with Amy Fair | Marketers Managing (a CMWorld mini-series)

Send us Fan Mail At Content Marketing World, host Rachel Moore interviews Vonage’s Amy Fair, an eight-time attendee, about why she keeps returning: beyond the speakers, it’s the year-round community built by Content Marketing Institute, including connections fostered through Slack and in-person meetups.  Amy explains her networking philosophy as a two-way street, shaped by experiences like losing a job and needing support, and emphasizes giving help as well as asking for it.  They discuss practical ways to network at the conference—starting conversations, using badges and interest-based lunch tables to find commonalities—and why it’s crucial to build relationships before you need them.  For job seekers, Amy urges being open about searching, leveraging contacts to bypass ATS hurdles, and remembering the human element.  Her mantra: nurture your network—people matter, and so do you. When Professional Development is Just Lip Service

Send us Fan Mail Rachel Moore records from a mobile studio at Content Marketing World, where she’s sponsoring and interviewing marketing experts for the “Marketers Managing” mini-series, and uses the setting to vent about employers who promise professional development during hiring but later deny time off or budget for conferences, even virtual events.  She shares that in 18 years of marketing and earlier office administration work, only one employer supported a multi-day out-of-state conference, while most others still required her to keep meeting obligations during sessions. She argues professionals must prioritize their own development, urges people managers to regularly ask about and support training opportunities, and challenges the fear that developing employees will make them leave.
