Episode 10 - Most Backrooms I've Seen Have Had a Casting Couch - Backrooms (2026) Review

For Episode 10 of Movies After Midnight, we're leaving the cozy confines of my basement recliner and heading into the Backrooms. Kane Parsons takes his bizarre internet phenomenon from YouTube to the big screen with Backrooms, a movie that starts with a mysterious yellow hallway and gets progressively stranger from there. I went into this one with basically no knowledge of the Backrooms beyond what I'd seen in the trailer, and somehow came out the other side having watched the movie three times. In this episode, I walk through the movie from beginning to end, talk about what makes the Backrooms so damn creepy, the performances from Chiwetel Ejiofor and Renate Reinsve, the movie's increasingly bizarre creatures and environments, and the surprisingly strong parallels between Clark and Mary. I also have some thoughts about the ending, the mysterious Async organization, why I think the movie works better when it leaves things unexplained, and break down where Backrooms ranks on the Movies After Midnight Definitive Rankings List on Letterboxd. If you've seen the movie, I'd love to hear what you thought. And if you haven't seen it yet, go watch it before listening because there are MAJOR SPOILERS throughout this episode. Episode 8 - I Think I Missed The First Three Movies - The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension (1984) Review

This week on Movies After Midnight, Night Owl Jones heads back down to the basement to take on one of the strangest cult classics of the 1980s: 1984’s The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension. We start by talking about what actually makes a cult classic, from The Rocky Horror Picture Show and The Evil Dead to The Thing and Killer Klowns from Outer Space, and how the death of video stores, cable TV, and the rise of streaming have changed the way movies become cult favorites. Then we dive into Buckaroo Banzai, a movie featuring brain surgery, rock and roll, aliens, the eighth dimension, nuclear war, Jeff Goldblum dressed like a cowboy, and approximately 47 different things happening at any given moment. We talk about the movie’s bizarre approach to world-building, John Lithgow going completely off the rails as Lord John Whorfin, Peter Weller’s aggressively monotone performance, Jeff Goldblum playing New Jersey, the infamous watermelon, some questionable musical performances, and whether randomness for the sake of randomness actually makes something funny. Plus, we discuss Penny Priddy, the Lectroid naming convention, the alien makeup, aggressively ’80s dancing, and why trying to follow the plot sometimes felt like I had accidentally walked into the fourth movie in a franchise that doesn’t exist. So is Buckaroo Banzai a misunderstood cult classic, or did I just miss the first three movies?
