Uncaged with Rene Steelman

Rene Steelman

Welcome to Uncaged, i'm René Steelman. If you've been with me from the beginning, you know this journey startedwith She Became Visible.  That show was about finding my voice and finallyallowing myself to be seen. But visibility was never the destination.Because once you become visible… you begin to realize something even bigger:you see yourself, and all the boxes that have defined you, caged you – but youwere never meant to live inside a cage. That's when I knew it was time for the next chapter. She Became Visible became… Uncaged. For most of my life, I didn't even realize I was living inside cages. Some were built by other people… some by tradition… some by fear… and a few,if i'm being honest, I built myself.I've been a Navy veteran, a wife, a mother, an author, a philanthropist, an ex-Mormon, a motorcycle rider, and a woman who decided that turning seventywasn't the end of my story—it was the beginning of my freedom. Here's what I've learned:Every one of us has a cage...Maybe it's a belief that no longer fits.A relationship that's become too small.A career that no longer lights you up.The voice in your head that says, "it's too late," or "this is just who I am"But here's the truth...The door has always been there. And together, we're going to find it and open it.Each week on Uncaged, you'll meet extraordinary women—and a few remarkablemen—who found the courage to question the life they were handed, unlock thedoors that held them back, and step into something bigger, bolder, and moreauthentic. This isn't about becoming someone new. It's about becoming who you were always meant to be.So wherever you're listening today, I want you to ask yourself one simplequestion:What cage am I ready to walk out of?Let's get Uncaged...together.I'm so glad you're here. Please like, share, and follow me now on Apple, Spotify, or wherever you enjoyyour shows.

Will the Real Mormon Church Please Stand Up?

What happens when a religion built around being a “peculiar people” begins looking—and sounding—more like mainstream Christianity? On this episode of Uncaged: She Became Visible, Rene  sits down with attorney, researcher, former federal prosecutor, Freemason, and adult convert to the LDS Church Lance Kennedy for a provocative exploration of the changing identity of modern Mormonism. Using an analysis of more than 5,800 General Conference talks and 11 million words, Lance examines what he sees as a dramatic shift beginning around 2018: less emphasis on distinctly Mormon language and theology, greater emphasis on Jesus, grace, Holy Week and traditional Christian imagery, changes to the temple ceremony, the move away from the word “Mormon,” and an increased focus on the living prophet over earlier church history. But the conversation goes much deeper. Rene and Lance explore Joseph Smith’s relationship to Freemasonry and the Western esoteric tradition, including seer stones, Masonic symbolism, prayer circles, Kabbalah, grimoires, The Magus, the Jupiter talisman, and the possible historical origins of rituals and concepts that generations of Latter-day Saints have practiced without necessarily knowing where they came from. For Rene, who spent decades inside the church, the conversation raises a larger question: If the things that once made Mormonism distinctly Mormon are gradually disappearing, what happens to the identity of the faith itself? This isn’t simply a conversation about believing or disbelieving. It’s an invitation to get curious—to ask where our beliefs came from, why particular rituals exist, how they have changed, and what those changes may tell us about where the LDS Church is headed next.
