    The Voice That Isn’t Theirs.

Your phone rings late at night. You answer. And on the other end is someone you love. Their voice is unmistakable. They’re scared. They need help. And they need money now. But there’s one problem. It isn’t them. It’s their voice. Artificially created by AI. With only a small amount of recorded audio, modern voice cloning technology can imitate the way someone sounds with disturbing accuracy. That audio could come from social media, a voicemail, a video, or even a gaming stream. And criminals are learning how to turn that technology into something terrifying. In this episode, KMAN Off Topic dives into the unsettling world of AI voice cloning scams, how the technology works, how criminals use panic and familiarity against us, and why hearing the voice of someone you trust may no longer be proof that you’re actually speaking to them. More importantly, we look at how you can protect yourself including one simple idea that could make all the difference when a suspicious call comes through: a family code word. But the technology is advancing. What happens when scammers no longer need a recording of your voice? What happens when seeing a face, hearing a voice, or recognizing a loved one isn’t enough to prove they’re really who they claim to be? The future of voice cloning raises an unsettling question: When you hear someone you trust… how do you know it’s really them? This is KMAN Off Topic. The Cameras That Never Forget.

You’ve probably driven past one. Maybe you noticed the camera. Maybe you didn’t. Mounted along roads, intersections, and highways across America, a growing network of cameras quietly watches the vehicles passing beneath them. They know the car. They can capture the license plate. They can record where a vehicle was and, depending on the system and circumstances, help piece together where it has been. The technology is called Flock Safety. And it has become one of the most controversial surveillance technologies in America. In this episode, KMAN Off Topic dives into the story behind Flock Safety and how a startup technology grew into a rapidly expanding nationwide network, why law enforcement embraced it, and how the same technology praised for helping solve crimes has sparked serious questions about privacy, misuse, wrongful stops, and the limits of government surveillance. What exactly are these cameras capable of seeing? Where does that information go? Who can access it? And how much of your movements can be reconstructed without you ever knowing? From the technology’s beginnings to its explosive expansion, we explore the crime solving successes, the controversies, and the communities beginning to push back. Because the unsettling part isn’t necessarily that these cameras exist. It’s how many of us may be driving past them every day without realizing just how much information they can collect. And as surveillance technology continues to evolve, one question becomes harder to ignore: How much privacy are we willing to give up in exchange for safety? Welcome back to KMAN Off Topic. The Smartphone’s finale?

There was a time when a new smartphone felt like a glimpse into the future. Every new generation brought something that seemed almost impossible. Touchscreens. Mobile internet. App stores. Cameras that replaced our cameras. Computers that disappeared into our pockets. For a while, technology moved so quickly that it was difficult to imagine what could possibly come next. Then… things slowed down. Today, a new phone arrives with a better camera, a faster processor, a brighter screen and a few new features. But where did the excitement go? Did smartphone innovation actually slow down? Or did something more interesting happen? Did the smartphone become so good that we stopped noticing just how much it changed our lives? In this episode, KMAN Off Topic explores the rise of the smartphone, from the strange experimental devices of its early years to the explosive period of innovation between 2008 and 2015 and finally to the seemingly predictable devices we carry today. We look at why companies became more cautious, why consumers increasingly feel like their phones are already “good enough,” and whether the smartphone has reached the limits of what it can become. But there may be something waiting beyond the screen. Foldable devices. AI powered technology. Augmented reality. Smart glasses. And possibly a future where the smartphone itself becomes something we no longer carry. Because maybe innovation didn’t disappear. Maybe we’re simply living through the quietest part of a much bigger technological transformation. The smartphone may not be dying. It may be evolving into something we haven’t fully recognized yet. And when that happens, we may look back at today’s phones the same way we look at the technology of the past: As the beginning of something much bigger. Follow and share on Spotify, iHeartRadio, and Apple Podcasts for more technology, dark history, strange stories, mysteries, and thought-provoking topics that make you question what comes next. #KMANOffTopic #Smartphones #Technology #TechHistory #FutureTechnology #AI #ArtificialIntelligence #SmartGlasses #AugmentedReality #Foldables #TechInnovation #FutureTech #TechnologyHistory #TechPodcast #DigitalLife #SmartphoneHistory #TheFuture #Innovation #DarkTechnology #TechStories

    The end of PlayStation Disc.

There was a time when buying a video game meant bringing something home. You could hold it in your hands. Tear off the shrink wrap. Open the case. Read the back of the box. And slide that disc into your PlayStation for the first time. But that era is coming to an end. Sony has announced that starting in January 2028, new PlayStation games will no longer be produced on physical discs. New releases will be available digitally instead, including through retailers that sell digital versions. Existing games and titles released on disc before the cutoff aren’t being erased but something fundamental about gaming is changing. And that raises a much bigger question: What happens when you can’t hold the game you paid for? In this episode, KMAN Off Topic dives into the history of PlayStation’s physical media, from CDs and DVDs to Bluray, and the generations of gamers who grew up building collections of blue cases on their shelves. We look at why Sony says the shift reflects changing consumer preferences, the convenience of digital gaming, and the potential benefits of leaving physical media behind. But there’s another side to the story. What happens to game collecting? What happens when a game can be removed from a storefront? What happens to your library when access depends on servers, licenses, accounts, and companies? And what does “owning” a video game actually mean in a world where the physical copy no longer exists? Maybe the disc isn’t just a piece of plastic. Maybe it’s the last physical connection between a player and the games they own. The PlayStation disc isn’t disappearing overnight. But its final chapter may have already begun. And someday, we may look back at those blue cases sitting on our shelves as artifacts from a different era of gaming. Welcome to KMAN Off Topic.
