    A Conversation with Joan Jacobson

    Sassy club member Joan Jacobson joins us and tells the story of the time a Mormon woman beat her husband to become the first female Utah state senator. Joan proves that the idea for a story can come from anywhere, as she explains how the idea for one of her books—about Dr. Martha Hughes Cannon, polygamist's wife and senator—came about. In a separate story, Joan shares how her latest book, Colorado Phantasmagoria, came about after a hike.     What's in a name?

    What is the Denver Woman's Press Club? Here we open with a passage from the centennial history book Women Who Made the Headlines of the Denver Woman's Press Club, reading from member Nancy Peterson's preface. It captures the feeling of stepping into the club's small brick house on Logan Street—a place where the voices of women who came before seem to speak again through old letters, clippings, and archives. It was this very passage—women "Restricted by Corsets but Never Silenced"—that inspired the name of this podcast.
