Episode 5: When Progress Doesn't Feel Like Progress

Have you ever felt like you've been working so hard, yet somehow you're still standing in the same place? Whether it's your health, your relationships, your career, or your personal growth, it can be discouraging when your effort doesn't seem to match the results you hoped for. In this episode of I'm Amanda, and I'm Listening, Amanda shares her personal journey of redefining what progress really means. What began as a desire to lose weight and "fix" her body eventually became something much deeper—a lesson about identity, chronic illness, self-compassion, and learning to measure what truly matters. Together, we'll explore how the things we choose to measure can quietly become the stories we tell ourselves about who we are, and why changing what you measure may be one of the most powerful steps you can take toward real growth. You'll also be guided through a simple reflection exercise to help you identify the measures you're using in your own life and consider whether they align with the person you're becoming. In This Episode, You'll Discover Why progress often feels invisible while it's happening. How the things we measure can shape the way we see ourselves. Why changing your measurements isn't giving up—it's growing. How chronic illness, changing seasons of life, and shifting priorities invite us to redefine success.A practical exercise to help you choose measurements that reflect the life you're trying to build.Reflection Questions As you head into your week, spend a few moments with these questions: What have you been measuring lately? How has that measurement shaped the way you see yourself? What's one new measure you could choose this week that better reflects the person you're becoming?Resources Looking for the resources from today's episode? Episode 4: Open the Door

What if the hardest part isn't the work itself? What if it's simply opening the door? In this episode of I'm Amanda, and I'm Listening, Amanda shares the story of a garage that quietly became the catch-all for years of unfinished decisions, sentimental belongings, and postponed choices. What started as a cluttered space eventually became something much bigger—a source of mental and emotional weight. Together, we'll explore why overwhelm often has less to do with the size of the task and more to do with the number of decisions we're carrying. Amanda shares the surprising lesson she learned when frustration finally pushed her to begin: we often overestimate the cost of starting and underestimate the relief that comes from making progress. You'll also be guided through a simple reflection exercise to help you identify the "door" you've been avoiding and discover one small next step you can take this week. In This Episode, You'll Discover Why unfinished decisions often feel heavier than unfinished tasks. How overwhelm convinces us to overestimate the effort it takes to begin. Why the relief of making progress is something we rarely account for.How guilt and obligation can keep us holding onto things that no longer serve us.A practical way to identify your next small step when everything feels overwhelming.Reflection Questions As you head into your week, spend a few moments with these questions: What did you notice about yourself today? What's one small step you're choosing before we meet again? What do you want to carry forward—and what can you give yourself permission to set down for now?Resources Looking for the resources from today's episode? Episode 3: Why Your Inner Voice Matters More Than You Think

Episode 3: Why Your Inner Voice Matters More Than You Think Have you ever noticed that the way you speak to yourself is often harsher than the way you'd speak to anyone else? In this episode of I'm Amanda, I'm Listening, we're exploring the powerful connection among your thoughts, your subconscious mind, and how you experience everyday life. We'll talk about why negative self-talk is so convincing, how your brain begins to treat repeated thoughts as familiar truths, and why changing the conversation inside your own mind is one of the most important steps toward lasting emotional health. You'll also hear why simply "thinking positive" isn't enough—and what actually helps create new patterns of thinking. In This Episode Why your inner voice mattersHow repeated thoughts shape beliefsWhat research tells us about the subconscious mind and automatic thinkingWhy self-compassion is more effective than self-criticismHow overwhelm changes the stories we tell ourselvesA simple practice to begin challenging unhelpful thoughtsA New Way to Think About Overwhelm One of the ideas I introduce in this episode is something you'll hear me talk about often: Overwhelm isn't always a sign that you're doing something wrong. Many times, overwhelm happens because the demands you're carrying exceed your current capacity. Think of it like this: Your load includes everything you're carrying: Work responsibilitiesFamily responsibilitiesEmotional laborDecision fatigueChronic illness or painCaregivingFinancial stressThe invisible weight of trying to hold everything togetherYour capacity is what you currently have available: EnergySleepPhysical healthEmotional reservesTimeSupportMental bandwidthWhen your load consistently outweighs your capacity, overwhelm becomes almost inevitable. That doesn't mean you're weak. It doesn't mean you're failing. It means something needs to change. In future episodes, we'll continue exploring this framework and how you can begin protecting your capacity before overwhelm takes over. Practice With Amanda Take a few quiet moments today to notice one negative thought you've repeated to yourself recently. Instead of asking: "Is this true?" Try asking: "Is this the only possible explanation?" Then imagine what you'd say to a close friend experiencing the exact same situation. Offer yourself that same kindness. Small shifts in how we speak to ourselves can create meaningful changes over time. One Small Step Catch one negative thought today. Pause. Challenge it. Replace it with something that is both truthful and compassionate. Not perfect. Not overly positive.Just honest. Reflection Question What story have you been telling yourself lately—and if it isn't serving you, what might be a kinder, more accurate story? If today's conversation resonated with you, I'd love to hear from you. You can submit future questions through the Ask Amanda form, where your question might inspire a future episode. Episode 2: You Don’t Have to Carry It Alone

When life feels heavy, many of us instinctively pull inward. We tell ourselves we should be able to handle it. We minimize what we are experiencing, avoid asking for help, and keep trying to push forward—even when we are exhausted. In this episode of I’m Amanda, I’m Listening, Amanda explores the difference between learning how to steady yourself and believing you must do everything by yourself. You’ll be guided through a simple grounding exercise designed to help you pause, reconnect with your body, and identify what you need in the present moment. Amanda also discusses why letting someone in can feel so difficult, how to recognize the people who are emotionally safe, and why asking for support does not make you weak, needy, or incapable. Sometimes the next small step is something you can take for yourself. Sometimes the next small step is allowing someone else to take it with you. In this episode, Amanda discusses: Why people often isolate when they are overwhelmed The difference between independence and carrying everything alone How stress can make it difficult to recognize what you need Why calming your body can help you think more clearly How to identify a safe and trustworthy source of support Simple ways to ask for help without explaining everything Why connection can be an important part of healing Practice With Amanda Amanda leads you through a gentle grounding exercise using your breath, your body, and a simple question: What do I need most in this moment? There is no pressure to immediately solve the problem. The purpose of the exercise is to slow down long enough to notice what your mind and body may be trying to tell you. Your One Small Step Think of one person who has shown that they can listen without judging, fixing, minimizing, or making the situation about themselves. Consider sending them a simple message: “I’m having a hard day. I don’t need you to fix it, but could you listen for a few minutes?” You do not have to tell your entire story. You only have to open the door. Reflection Question What might change if I stopped believing I had to carry everything alone? Have you ever looked at your to-do list and wondered, "Why can't I just start?" If so, you're not alone. In the very first episode of I'm Amanda, I'm Listening, we're talking about what overwhelm really is—and why it isn't a sign that you're lazy, unmotivated, or failing. Overwhelm isn't always about having too much to do. Sometimes it's what happens when our thoughts, emotions, responsibilities, and expectations all compete for our attention at the same time. When that happens, even simple decisions can feel impossible. In this episode, Amanda shares a personal story about her experience with overwhelm, explains what happens when your nervous system becomes overloaded, and guides you through a simple breathing exercise that helped her during one of the busiest seasons of her life. Whether you're juggling work, family, caregiving, relationships, or simply feeling like life has become "too much," this conversation is an invitation to pause, breathe, and remember that you don't have to solve everything today. Why overwhelm is different from laziness How an overloaded nervous system affects decision-making A simple breathing practice to help you reset in the moment Why the next small step is often enough The next time you notice yourself feeling overwhelmed, pause and ask yourself: "What is the very next step?"
