The series moves through Scripture book by book, one season at a time — two devotionals per stop along the way, with new episodes added as it continues.

A Letter Written to Us | Cozy Afternoon Walk: Ephesians (S2), Ep.33

Welcome to Cozy Afternoon Walk — a short pause in your day to sit with Scripture, one verse at a time. Today's passage: Ephesians 1:3 "Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ." (NIV) Think of the day after we finally understand something we have wondered about for years. The alarm still goes off at the same time, the same inbox is waiting, and life looks just as it did before. A new question can follow us into that ordinary day: what does the Bible do with us next? Some of us decide the story is over. Others decide the rest is for experts. Ephesians opens with a single sentence, and it has more to say to that question than we might expect. Come and sit with it for a few minutes today, and see what it says about what we have been given, and who is meant to hear it. This episode is part of our season through Ephesians. One Giver, Every Place | Cozy Afternoon Walk: Ephesians (S2), Ep.32

Welcome to Cozy Afternoon Walk — a short pause in your day to sit with Scripture, one verse at a time. Today's passage: Ephesians 4:7, 11 "But to each one of us grace has been given as Christ apportioned it. ... So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers." (NIV) After a concert, the applause goes to the singer at the microphone. Hardly anyone turns toward the back of the room, where someone has kept every voice clear. Most of us do not mean to rank people, but we notice who stands in front, and we quietly sort the rest. Church can work the same way. Then Paul gives a list of roles in Ephesians 4, and we wonder whether he meant it to be read that way. Come and sit with these verses for a few minutes, and see what they say about the place each of us has been given today. This episode is part of our season through Ephesians. Already One | Cozy Afternoon Walk: Ephesians (S2), Ep.31

Welcome to Cozy Afternoon Walk — a short pause in your day to sit with Scripture, one verse at a time. Today's passage: Ephesians 4:3–6a "Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to one hope when you were called; one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all." (NIV) When a family hears a will read aloud, the room goes quiet at one line. It is not the watch or the savings. It is the plain request that the children stay close to each other. On the night before the cross, Jesus left his friends a request like that, and he asked for the same thing again and again: that they would be one. But what kind of "one" did he mean? If it means we all agree, it sounds like a very heavy job, until Paul gives us one surprising verb and one small phrase. Come and sit with these verses for a few minutes, and see what they ask of us today. This episode is part of our season through Ephesians. New devotionals added regularly. Where Broken Bones Are Set | Cozy Afternoon Walk: Ephesians (S2), Ep.30

Welcome to Cozy Afternoon Walk — a short pause in your day to sit with Scripture, one verse at a time. Today's passage: Ephesians 4:11–12 "So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up." (NIV) Most of us have thought it at some point: I'm in no shape to go to church today. After a hard week, church can look like a place for people whose lives are in good order, so we wait until we feel better. Then Paul tells us why Christ gave the church certain people, and his reason points the other way. We look at a picture hidden inside one Greek word, at what it asks of the people who serve, and at where all of it is heading. Come and sit with these verses for a few minutes. The One Who Came Down First | Cozy Afternoon Walk: Ephesians (S2), Ep.29

Welcome to Cozy Afternoon Walk — a short pause in your day to sit with Scripture, one verse at a time. Today's passage: Ephesians 4:8–10 "This is why it says: 'When he ascended on high, he took many captives and gave gifts to his people.' (What does 'he ascended' mean except that he also descended to the lower, earthly regions? He who descended is the very one who ascended higher than all the heavens, in order to fill the whole universe.)" (NIV) A gift for a friend in the hospital can reach her in two ways. It can be left at the front desk, or it can be carried down the hall and placed in her hands by the bed. Paul is writing about gifts here, and then he does something surprising. He breaks into a victory song about someone who went up, and he stops to ask where that someone started. The answer changes how we look at everything we have been given. Come and sit with these verses for a few minutes. This episode is part of our season through Ephesians. New devotionals added regularly. The Eleventh Hour | Cozy Afternoon Walk: Ephesians (S2), Ep.28

Welcome to Cozy Afternoon Walk — a short pause in your day to sit with Scripture, one verse at a time. Today's passage: Ephesians 4:7 "But to each one of us grace has been given as Christ apportioned it." (NIV) One person works from sunrise. Another arrives an hour before the day ends. The pay is the same, and most of us feel the "that's not fair" before we can stop it. Jesus told a story about a vineyard owner who does exactly this, and the early workers have a complaint that is easy to understand. But listen to how the owner answers them, and to the name he calls the one who complains. Paul's short sentence about grace helps us hear the story again. It also puts a name on two quiet voices many of us carry, one that says "I have done more" and one that says "I am too late." Come and sit with this verse for a few minutes. This episode is part of our season through Ephesians. New devotionals added regularly. This content was carefully selected and prepared by M.Div. students and faculty. Over, Through, In | Cozy Afternoon Walk: Ephesians (S2), Ep.27

Welcome to Cozy Afternoon Walk — a short pause in your day to sit with Scripture, one verse at a time. Today's passage: Ephesians 4:6 "One God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all." (NIV) Ask a child where God is, and two answers arrive at once: in heaven, and right here with us. Both feel true, yet most of us lean on one picture more than the other. Some of us bow before a God who is holy and high. Some of us lean on a God who sits close in an ordinary day. Near the end of a list of "ones," Paul puts both pictures into a single sentence. We look at three small phrases, at a real date from history that shows what one of them means, and at why two groups who sing about God so differently may be singing to the same Lord. Come and sit with this verse for a few minutes. This episode is part of our season through Ephesians. New devotionals added regularly. Making Room | Cozy Afternoon Walk: Ephesians (S2), Ep.26

Welcome to Cozy Afternoon Walk — a short pause in your day to sit with Scripture, one verse at a time. Today's passage: Ephesians 4:2 "Be patient, bearing with one another in love." (NIV) Most of us know someone we love in theory and struggle with in practice: the same story, the same lateness, the same small comment that spoils the mood. When Paul asks for patience and for bearing with one another, it can sound like an order to stay silent and smile. But what if his words are closer to sharing a weight than to standing at a distance? We look at where patience finds its length, at a surprising line Paul wrote to another church, and at a small act of moving over that changes what a heart can hold. Come and sit with this verse for a few minutes. This episode is part of our season through Ephesians. New devotionals added regularly.
