    Hellmouths | Strange Christian Art

“Abandon all hope, ye who enter here” - Dante's Inferno, Canto III.Uploaded 01-04-22Across Christian art, the entrance to Hell is depicted as a giant mouth. A gaping set of jaws that devours the souls of the damned. These Hellmouths are everywhere, cropping up in manuscripts, prayer books, and paintings. Even in early theatre productions, where giant mechanical mouths were constructed in medieval town squares. The Christian Hellmouth is a disturbing image and a useful deterrent against wrongdoing. It appeals to a very basic human instinct: don’t get eaten. In this life, or the next. But where did this frightening image come from? Many believe that the Hellmouth has its roots in Norse mythology, With its hellish ideas of man-eating wolves and devouring dragons. It seems like Viking beliefs about the afterlife seemed to have made their way into Saxon Christianity, as seen in examples like the Gosforth Cross, and in parallels between Satan and the dragon Nidhogg. I'm thrilled that so many of you enjoyed my last video, so I am hoping to make this into a little series. Before then, I'll be taking a small Spring break next week, but it shouldn't disrupt my upload schedule. Thank you all for 579k subscribers!H.P.S. The Tower of Babel (But Biblically Accurate)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_9sTr6n0MFcUploaded 28-03-25What REALLY happened at Babel? The Tower of Babel is one of the most famous stories in the Bible—where God confuses the universal human language and scatters the people across the earth. But where did the Tower of Babel come from? In this "biblically accurate" guide, I’ll dive into Old Testament history to explore the true origins of the Tower of Babel. We’ll look at how this story may have been inspired by the Babylonian ziggurat, Etemenanki, a massive structure that stood at the heart of ancient Mesopotamia.Helpful PSA: I use the term “biblically accurate” with caution. Of course, interpretations vary, and the term can be a bit loaded depending on your background or beliefs. This video isn’t about pushing a particular theological view—rather, I pride myself on research, historical context, and digging into the ancient world behind the text. So if you’re a fan of history, biblical studies, or just want to know what might have happened at Babel—this one’s for you!Thank you for 867K subscribers, whoop!H.--------Chapters:00:00 Intro00:43 The Tower of Babel04:51 The Etemenanki08:58 The Babylonian Exile10:38 Final Thoughts11:23 Outro--------👽📺 Listen to my podcast, The Interruption:On Spotify:https://open.spotify.com/show/7gnUglG...On Apple:https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast...-----Sources and Further Reading:Genesis 11:1-9https://biblehub.com/genesis/11.htmThe Tower of Babel Stele M2 2063https://www.schoyencollection.com/history-collection-introduction/babylonian-history-collection/tower-babel-stele-ms-2063The Tower of Babel Stele Found in Babylon by Olof Pedersenhttps://www.cambridge.org/core/services/aop-cambridge-core/content/view/A712F186B2FA1965854911081620467B/S0021088924000044a.pdf/tower_of_babylon_stele_found_in_babylon.pdfTower of Babel - Wikipediahttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tower_of_Babel---------Music and Footage: Intro - Epic of Gilgamesh in Sumerian by Peter Pringle https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QUcTs...Ghaith by Ali SabahVia Epidemic SoundPandora's Box by Arthur BensonVia Epidemic SoundMin Wahi El-Lami by Ali SabahVia Epidemic SoundSalat Alsabah by Feras CharestanVia Epidemic SoundOutro - Peaceful Ambient Music by CO.AG https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCcav... Dante's Inferno: A Visitor’s Guide to Hell

Welcome to the depths of the underworld! In this video, I take you on an in-depth journey through Dante’s Inferno, and a breakdown of all nine circles of Hell, from Limbo to Treachery. The first part of The Divine Comedy, written by Dante Alighieri in the 14th century, this legendary epic poem is one of the most vivid and detailed depictions of Hell in literary history, shaping our modern imagination of eternal punishment. Uploaded 28-01-25Helpful PSA: I've had to gloss over finer story beats within this video, so I have included a link to Inferno below!Wow, it’s been a while! Long-time viewers of the channel may have gathered I’ve been on a hiatus. During that time, I’ve been exploring new paths in my career and my personal life, and so wanted to step away from videos gave me the space to explore those paths (it's one hell of a tale!). Where Does the Grim Reaper Come From?

Where does the Grim Reaper come from? Who is this skeletal incarnation of death really? In this video we’ll explore the origins of the Grim Reaper. A journey that takes us from ancient deities/archetypes of mortality all the way to history’s worst pandemic, the Black Death, the ghoulish environment from which the grim reaper (as we now know it) surfaced. Uploaded 30-08-20You may be surprised to know that the Grim Reaper isn’t actually mentioned in the Bible, and whilst there are descriptions of angels of death and apocalyptic horsemen that seem similar, it may be largely superficial. Let me know your thoughts though. Perhaps the Grim Reaper originally developed from figures from European folklore, especially the Ankou which comes from Celtic Mythology (Cornish and Breton to be exact). These figures synthesised with an increased number of images of death in medieval paintings post Black Death, in a movement known as the Danse Macabre. And there we have it: The Grim Reaper. On another note, we made it! 1,000 subscribers. It’s been a rather sudden rise in views and subscribers, and I couldn’t be happier that more people can see my content. The Disturbing Paintings of Hieronymus Bosch

There is no other artist quite like Hieronymus Bosch. During the European Renaissance, this Dutch painter was conjuring up nightmarish hellscapes, full of grotesque and nonsensical creatures. Particularly in his most famous piece, The Garden of Earthly Delights. Uploaded 26-11-21But why did this artist create such disturbing paintings? Are they the product of a lively imagination, imbued with symbolic religious meaning? Or are they the products of a troubled mind, afflicted by intense and frightening hallucinations? Let’s investigate the paintings of Hieronymus Bosch and get a glimpse at the artist behind his strange and unsettling work.I really enjoyed making this video and learnt lots during the making of it. We use expressions and idioms in everyday conversation. But have you ever wondered where they come from? For example, why shouldn’t we cry over spilt milk?
