    The Hard Sayings Of Jesus

“Whoever calls on the name of the Lord will be saved” sounds straightforward until you put it next to Jesus saying, “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven.” We start there, because that tension is where a lot of people get stuck, and where critics love to claim the Bible contradicts itself. Chad and Terry dig into the original language and show why “calling on the Lord” is not a throwaway religious phrase, but an appeal that places your whole life under the authority of a King. From that foundation, we walk into the Sermon on the Mount and the hard sayings of Jesus in Matthew 5. Jesus doesn’t just tell us not to murder. He goes after anger, contempt, and the insults we excuse as “just words.” He doesn’t just prohibit adultery. He exposes lust and objectification as heart-level betrayal, and he uses shocking language to show how deadly sin really is. We also talk through divorce, vows, and why integrity means your yes stays yes without fancy oaths or loopholes. The episode lands on the commands that feel impossible, like turning the other cheek, loving enemies, and “be perfect.” We unpack teleios and why Jesus isn’t offering self-improvement, but a call to maturity that only works through him and the indwelling Holy Spirit. If you’ve ever felt crushed by Jesus’ standards or confused by grace, this conversation puts both in the same frame: the bar is higher than you think, and that’s exactly why we need Christ. Subscribe for more Bible-focused conversations, share this with a friend who wrestles with the Sermon on the Mount, and leave a review so more people can find Truth and Trouble. What’s the hardest saying of Jesus for you to live out right now?
