The Sonship Life — Sermons by Matthew Barnwell

Matthew Barnwell

Most of us were taught what we've been saved from. Fewer were taught what we've been adopted into. This is a growing library of sermons exploring sonship as a framework for the Christian life — our identity in Christ, the grace of the Father, the work of the Holy Spirit, and what it looks like to live as a restored, whole human being. These teachings come out of an ongoing journey of study and discovery, offered in the hope that they'll be useful to others walking the same road — growing in the knowledge of God and learning to live from the reality of adoption as sons and daughters.

    Rediscovering True Humanity

What does it actually mean to be human — and is your humanity a hindrance to your walk with God, or the very vehicle he designed to work through? In this teaching from 2023, Matthew continues a series on removing the blockages that hold us back from maturing in God. He unpacks three definitions of "humanity" before landing on the one that matters most: the quality or state of being human, as God originally intended it. Tracing what happened at the fall — when Adam's spirit was demoted beneath his soul — Matthew shows how our humanness became corrupted, and why so many believers wrongly assume that anything "human" is opposed to the spiritual. The truth is the opposite. Humanity was never meant to be discarded or suppressed — it was designed to collaborate with spirit. Through 2 Corinthians 4:7 ("we have this treasure in earthen vessels") and 2 Corinthians 3:2-3, Matthew shows how our humanness is the container built to carry Christ himself, and how Jesus didn't just come to save us — he came to model what true humanity, fully aligned with spirit, actually looks like. If you've ever felt like your weaknesses, personality, or struggles disqualify you from carrying God's presence, this message will reframe how you see yourself entirely.
