S1 E2 The Summer Invitation to Creativity

This is an episode about the summer  and now for many people  and absolutely rightly so, the summer  is a time when we try to get rest and relaxation into it. In many sectors and many jobs  or many life situations we are able to take our foot off the gas a little bit  and the world around us also slows down so we're getting00:30less demands, less activities, less things on perhaps in the evenings. I know that parents are very busy,  but perhaps busy in terms of doing things, but still with some01:00headspace and I wanted to talk into that.  That right now  as you rest and relax  I am going to be guessing that there's some things will bubble up underneath and that is what our soul does.  As we give it a bit more space we can listen  more closely to what are the ideas bubbling away. What are the01:27thoughts in the background that might come to the forefront.  What  are some of the  ideas or the creativity  that we have? What comes forward  as we are less busy  and  as we have less external demands on us? I'm really excited to encourage you to listen to those things  and to make space for them.01:56And this is just a reminder that there is always a new horizon.  There are always new opportunities.  We are at a time in history when building things and creating things, bringing an idea into life is perhaps easier than it has ever been before.02:27And  so I want to really encourage you this summer,  give yourself some space  and start to dream, start to imagine  what you might want to build, create, bring into being that right now is just an idea, just a few thoughts, but is some, but02:55is something that you have to bring to the world.  And  why is the summer such a great time to think about this in addition to it giving us a bit more space?  The evenings are longer, it is lighter. Of course, I'm talking to people in the Northern Hemisphere right now.  03:22There is a little bit of time at the end of the day perhaps to bring to the forefront things that are perhaps just underneath the surface.  And so there's time to dream,  to journal if you journal,  to look things up, to follow your line of curiosity,  to... wonder and to explore and this is the perfect month to do that.  So that is my offering to you and my invitation to you this August.04:05is to just give yourselves those moments and not even just that space but to actually be deliberate and intentional and purposeful about creating and dreaming and imagining  what you could create  and  capturing and enjoying that ideas phase, the beginning bit when everything is possible and when you are just04:34digging into the things that you most value and are most excited about.  Follow  where your energy is and what you're excited about and keep pressing into that and go down a,  almost like a journey of exploration into the things that most interest you and most excite you.  And I know that I'm talking to some of you  are, em05:02Some of you are in  politics or in parliament  where you're still serving people and um you're still essentially available to people,  but you are also able perhaps to prioritize the things that you care about the most  or to  carve out time with more time in your schedule and to take decisions about what you prioritize.05:31So for those of you that have that month like that, I just want to really encourage you to harness as much as possible the energy giving activities and what you love.  For those of you that have got to this stage in the summer and you have the year hasn't quite panned out how you thought,  perhaps you've had...05:56Perhaps there have been decisions made or you've had news you didn't expect or relationships or life has taken a different turn  to what you expected this year.  Allow yourself perhaps to dream  a bit this August about what a new season and a new phase  could entail.

S1 E1 Mid-Year Review -The most important question to ask yourself

Episode Transcript: 00:01 It's the beginning of July and that means that we are just going into quarter three and it's often a good milestone where we look at what we've brought to the table in the last half of the year and we look at what we want to get done before the end of the year. And it's really tempting at moments where you do do a stock take, where you do step back and assess things, do think immediately about adding. We think about what we want to add, what we want to bring, what we want to 01:00 lift up our to-do list. What are the priorities that we haven't quite hit yet that we feel are really important? And I want to encourage us as we do that type of thinking, and it is worth doing that thinking even though we're just ahead of the summer because it's a really useful milestone this mid-year point, but I want to encourage us to think about what is it that we're letting go of as well. 01:30 In fact, first, before doing this thinking, let's think about what we're letting go of. And I want to go further than that. And I want to really ask you and myself, what is done? What is finished? And I don't mean just in terms of a project or a program or an intervention or a decision that you were influencing that is 01:59 done and finished, you feel happy, it's complete, it was the beginning of the year and that's over. I want to really push us to go further and think what are we holding on to that is actually done and finished? It is of the last season, not of the coming season. And I know I'm talking to high capacity people. I know that we can add 02:29 and we can achieve it. I don't doubt that you can add things into what you're already doing and if you have the energy and the focus behind them, you'll be able to achieve it. But I'm really interested in us considering that there is also a heaviness that comes with things that we keep going that we're actually for before. There's a complication, there's an impact on our bandwidth. 02:57 We can be weighed down by the things that aren't actually for now, but we're keeping them going. And there are numerous reasons why we keep them going, right? So someone I was coaching recently, he'd been asked to step up and into something as he came into a new world, he'd been asked to step into something and take over something by someone that he really respected. Of course he said yes at that moment, that was the right decision at that moment. 03:23 But two years on, is it still the right decision? 03:37 Was there something that was pivotal and important for a certain moment? And that moment has gone, but it remains. It remains as a building block and as a key part of how we approach something or what we do. Have we embedded it into our role when it was something that would really have made more sense to come and go? And what about these things that actually are about identity? 04:01 that we took on, that we do, that we are bringing, that we are putting our energy and our effort behind, because they say something about who we are and who we're showing up as in the world. And if that's the case, is that the thing that you need to embrace that identity and reflect that identity? Do you need that particular thing? Do you need that particular person? Do you need that particular project? Or is there a different way that you can 04:31 embrace and express the identity of who you are and what you're bringing to the world. I'm speaking to change makers and I'm speaking to action takers and I know that in the same way that I am, you're at decision making tables, you are in strategic decisions, you are in strategic places and therefore what we let go of becomes absolutely crucial because it has direct correlation 05:00 to what we pick up and put our focus and effort on. So that's my encouragement to us at this midpoint is look at what you want to let go of and allow yourself to say, this thing is done, this is finished. I'm moving on to something new in its place.
