How to Forgive When You've Been Hurt | Four Principles of Forgiveness

This week’s message, “How to Forgive When You’ve Been Hurt,” explores Genesis 45:1–15 and invites us to discover what forgiveness really means—and what it doesn’t mean.Through the story of Joseph and his brothers, we discover four important truths: forgiveness is not forgetting, forgiveness is not condoning what happened, forgiveness does not always require restoring a relationship, and holding onto the past can keep us captive.Forgiveness is hard work. But for followers of Jesus, it is also at the heart of the gospel. We forgive not because the hurt didn’t matter, but because in Christ, God has forgiven us.If you’re carrying an old resentment, wound, or relationship you can’t seem to release, this message offers practical and biblical encouragement for taking a step toward healing and freedom.Show Notes Joseph had every reason to resent his brothers. Instead, when they were finally reunited, Joseph acknowledged the wrong they had done while choosing a path toward forgiveness and reconciliation. The sermon highlights four principles: Forgiveness is not forgetting. We don’t have to pretend the hurt never happened.Forgiveness is not condoning. Forgiving someone does not make what they did acceptable.Forgiveness doesn’t always mean restored relationship. Healthy boundaries can coexist with forgiveness.Holding onto the past ultimately hurts us. Resentment can become a prison that keeps us tied to the person or event that wounded us.For Christians, there is an even deeper reason to forgive: “Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you” (Ephesians 4:32). Practical next step: Bring one unresolved hurt before God this week. Ask God what it would look like to release your need for judgment, seek healing, and begin moving toward forgiveness. These themes and illustrations come directly from the sermon transcript, including the distinction between forgiveness and reconciliation and the image of resentment creating a “prison with an open door.” 📌 Subscribe for weekly messages, devotionals, and more from FPCRogers. God Is Not In There by Liz Larkin, Elder at FPC Rogers, Arkansas

This week’s message, “God Is Not In There” explores 1 Kings 19:9–18 and invites us to reflect on how God meets us in exhaustion, questions, storms, and silence.Elijah had been faithful. He had experienced an extraordinary victory. And then he reached the point where he simply could not carry any more.God did not shame Elijah or tell him to try harder. God cared for him, listened to him, and eventually met him not in the wind, earthquake, or fire, but in the quiet.Sometimes God doesn’t shout. Sometimes God whispers. And when God seems quiet, we should not mistake the silence for absence. This message also challenges us to practice the ministry of presence. When someone is hurting, we do not always need an explanation or the perfect words. Sometimes faithfulness looks like saying, “I don’t know, but I am here”—and staying.Whether you’re watching from home or on the go, we’re glad you’re here.📌 Subscribe for weekly messages, devotionals, and more from FPCRogers.DOWNLOAD YOUR FREE DEVOTIONAL GUIDEWould you like to be more guided by God's Spirit in your daily life? From Scarcity to Abundance, A sermon on the Feeding of the Five Thousand by Rev.. John Arnold

This week's message, "From Scarcity to Abundance," explores Matthew 14:13–21 and reminds us that Jesus meets us in our moments of insufficiency. Through the miracle of feeding the five thousand, we discover that God is not limited by our resources. When we place what little we have into Christ's hands, He delights in multiplying it for His glory and the good of others. Whether you're watching from home or on the go, we're glad you're here. Key Takeaways God specializes in abundance.Faith begins with surrender.Jesus multiplies surrendered resources.Prayer is bringing people to Christ.God often works through ordinary people with ordinary gifts. Reflection Questions What feels insufficient in your life? How have you seen God provide before? What keeps you from trusting Him now?Who can you bring before Jesus in prayer?Where is God calling you to take one faithful step? PRAYER Lord Jesus, I confess that I often focus on what I lack instead of who You are. Take whatever I have—my gifts, my weaknesses, my fears, and my hopes—and use them for Your kingdom. Help me trust that You are a God of abundance. Give me courage to bring others to You and faith to believe You can do more than I imagine. Amen.
