Meet Me Outside the Gate at Five

What happens when you've been the boss for about a month—and one of your former coworkers challenges you in front of your entire staff? More than 30 years ago, I was a newly promoted wastewater superintendent, the first woman to hold that position in my municipality. I had gone from working beside my coworkers to being responsible for leading them, and not everyone was ready for that transition. Then one afternoon, a routine work assignment turned into a very public confrontation. She threatened to fight me. And young Angela responded: “Meet me outside the gate at five o'clock.” 😳😂 Before anyone calls HR, let me be clear: this is a leadership story, not leadership advice. In Episode 002 of Midnight in the Field, I look back at that confrontation with more than three decades of leadership experience and ask some very different questions. What happens when a new leader feels she has to prove she can't be intimidated? How do you earn respect when yesterday's coworkers become today's employees? And what does real leadership look like after the confrontation is over? This one has a little gossip, a lot of hindsight, and a leadership lesson I couldn't have understood at the time. Because growth isn't pretending we always got it right. Sometimes it's being able to look back and say, “Lord...I really did that.” 😂 🎙️ Midnight in the Field Real stories. Real leadership lessons. Conversations from beneath the surface. New episodes every Saturday at 9 PM Eastern.
