    Six miles and 2,700 feet of elevation gain into the circuit, Haley earns her second trail name (Dr. Dolittle) after a stray dog adopts her for the day, a herd of pack mules and a very nervous cow nearly go off a cliff, and a clogged water filter threatens to slow the whole operation down.     After a slow, freezing morning disrupted by a curious cow licking a neighboring tent clean, an Andean fox mysteriously appears to guide the sisters up a grueling, four-and-a-half-hour climb over Punta Union Pass. New trail friends collect along the way, and the night ends with a rare, deliberate look at the stars.
