The Opera Star Who Carried Two Worlds

Plácido Domingo was born in Madrid, raised in Mexico, and grew up inside the world of zarzuela before becoming one of opera’s most internationally recognized voices. His career would stretch far beyond singing—from the world’s great opera houses to The Three Tenors, conducting, arts leadership, and helping discover a new generation of singers. But this episode of The Walking Tenor is also personal. Long before Jesús Daniel Hernández knew exactly where his own voice might take him, he stood before Domingo in San Antonio, Texas—a U.S. Army soldier and aspiring opera singer with no clear map for what came next. Domingo listened. What followed was encouragement, opportunity, and a moment of recognition that would leave a lasting fingerprint on Hernández’s life and career. This is a story about Madrid and Mexico, zarzuela and opera, enormous stages and young voices still waiting to be heard. It is also a personal reflection on mentorship, gratitude, access, and what can happen when someone who has already reached the top turns around and listens to the person still climbing. Because sometimes a legacy isn't found only in recordings, roles, or applause. Sometimes it lives in the person who kept going because someone once told him: There is something here. Why Boleros Make You Cry

Why do we willingly listen to songs that we know might make us cry? In Episode 5 of The Walking Tenor Podcast, Jesús Daniel Hernández explores the strange emotional power of the bolero—music that can turn a melody into a memory and an ordinary room into a place filled with people, places, loves, and losses we thought we had left behind. From its unhurried pulse and unresolved longing to the expressive weight of the Spanish language, the bolero has a remarkable way of giving sorrow a shape. A guitar begins, a voice holds a note just a little longer, and suddenly the past has keys to the house. But perhaps we don't listen to boleros because we want to suffer. Perhaps we listen because they remind us that someone else has felt it too. Boleros don't break your heart. They finish the sentence your heart started. The Jazz Singer Who Couldn't Read Music

Before Ella Fitzgerald became the First Lady of Song, she was a frightened teenager standing on the stage of Harlem's Apollo Theater with a completely different plan: she was supposed to dance. Then the plan changed. In Episode 4 of The Walking Tenor Podcast, Jesús Daniel Hernández follows Ella from that pivotal Amateur Night performance into the bandstand of Chick Webb, the freedom of scat singing, and the extraordinary musical instinct that made her one of the greatest voices in jazz. Ella's story challenges what it means to be musically educated. She learned by listening—reading rhythm, musicians, rooms and the tiny movements inside the music. What she developed was a different kind of literacy, one powerful enough to transform improvisation into conversation and the Great American Songbook into something entirely her own. This is a story about instinct and discipline, about learning outside the traditional classroom, and about what can happen when life changes the plan and you have the courage to listen. The Song He Remembered

When Danny was five or six years old, he came home from school with a song he couldn't stop thinking about. Sitting on his father's lap in military housing at Fort Hood, Texas, he tried to describe a cat singing a song that was “soooo beautiful.” The song was “Memory” from Cats. Years later, Danny still remembered that afternoon. In this special birthday episode of The Walking Tenor Podcast, Jesús Daniel Hernández returns to that ordinary moment and follows the story behind “Memory” — from T. S. Eliot and Andrew Lloyd Webber to Grizabella and one of musical theatre's most beloved songs. But this is ultimately not a story about Cats. It's about a father and son. About the little moments we don't realize are important while we're living them. About the things memory forgets — and the things it somehow refuses to let go. Because that afternoon, Danny thought he was listening to a beautiful song. His father didn't know it yet, but they were making a memory. Happy birthday, Danny. The Mariachi Hit That Crossed Borders

Four simple syllables became one of the most recognizable choruses in the world: Ay, ay, ay, ay. In this episode of The Walking Tenor Podcast, Jesús Daniel Hernández follows the extraordinary journey of “Cielito Lindo”—from its Mexican roots to family kitchens, mariachi tables, concert stages, and stadiums around the world. But this is more than the story of a famous song. It is a story about immigration, memory, community, and the remarkable power of music to travel where people sometimes cannot. Because Cielito Lindo doesn’t tell us that life gives us no reason to cry. It tells us something braver: Canta y no llores. Sing anyway.

The Tenor Who Wasn’t Supposed to Sing

Before Luciano Pavarotti became the white handkerchief, the Three Tenors, the stadiums, and one of the most recognizable voices in history, he was standing close to a very different life: a classroom. In Episode 2 of The Walking Tenor Podcast, tenor Jesús Daniel Hernández follows Pavarotti from his working-class beginnings in Modena—the son of a baker and a cigar-factory worker—through the uncertainty of choosing between a respectable career as a teacher and the extraordinary voice that was becoming impossible to ignore. From his 1961 debut as Rodolfo in La Bohème to the opportunity that put him onstage at Covent Garden, this is the story of a young man who took the risk and discovered that perhaps he never stopped being a teacher at all. His classroom simply became the world. A story about talent, uncertainty, courage, and knowing when a dream has become too loud to ignore. The Walking Tenor Podcast — Stories That Sing.

The Song That Almost Didn’t Exist

Today, “’O Sole Mio” is one of the most recognizable melodies in the world. But it did not begin as a legend. The song arrived quietly, flopped, and almost vanished. In this episode, we travel from Naples to Odessa, from the early recordings of Enrico Caruso to Elvis Presley’s “It’s Now or Never,” and discover how a simple song about sunlight became something far bigger: a story about home, love, memory, and the second chances that keep music alive.

The Song He Didn’t Know He Gave Me

Before the legends, the arias, and the songs that changed the world, there is one story I need to tell first. In this personal prologue, I reflect on Glen Hansard, “Her Mercy,” grief, and the strange way a song written for someone else can arrive exactly when we need it. This is a story about loss, memory, and the gifts artists leave behind without ever knowing who will receive them.
