From sky-high vendor fees and nonexistent marketing to poorly vetted practitioners, pay-to-play speaking opportunities, overpromising event organizers, performative community, and the red flags that make us walk away, we're talking about what happens when people become dollar signs instead of human beings. We also wander straight into the AI cauldron: where AI can genuinely support accessibility and the creative process, where we believe it crosses the line into replacing creativity, and why authenticity matters when you're asking people to trust you, hire you, attend your event, or attach their name to yours. Because ethical business doesn't mean nobody makes money. Organizers deserve to be paid. Practitioners deserve to profit. Artists deserve compensation. Businesses need to survive. The question is: does your success require somebody else's extraction?
