Science meets Soul

Michelle Matsen

Science Meets Soul is a women’s health podcast challenging the way we’ve been taught to think about health, fitness and our bodies. Hosted by nutrition coach Michelle Matsen, it’s where evidence-based science meets lived experience, real conversations and a little soul. We’ll talk nutrition, movement, mindset, hormones, ageing and longevity - shifting the focus away from shrinking, shredding and chasing aesthetics, and towards nourishing our bodies, building strength and creating health that will carry us through the decades ahead. Because your body isn’t an ornament. It’s where you live.

EP 04: Are You Actually Strength Training? Why Sweaty, Sore & Exhausted Doesn’t Always Mean Stronger

Are you actually strength training - or are you just getting really good at feeling exhausted? In this episode of Science Meets Soul, I’m unpacking the difference between true strength training, circuit-style workouts and conditioning - and why feeling sweaty, sore and completely spent doesn’t necessarily mean you’re getting stronger. We’ll talk about how muscle actually adapts, progressive overload, why mechanical loading matters for our muscles and bones, and why rest between sets isn’t “wasted time.” I also unpack our obsession with making every workout feel hard - from constantly chasing calorie burn and muscle burn to spending our sessions somewhere in that moderately-hard middle - and why different types of training should have different purposes. And importantly, this isn’t about telling you that bootcamps or circuit classes are “bad.” If you love them, keep doing them. But understand what they’re giving you - and whether you’re actually getting the progressive strength stimulus you think you are. And if you DON’T love them? If you’re exhausted, sore, depleted and dreading every workout? You don’t have to train that way. There’s a difference between challenging your body and constantly punishing it. Stop asking how hard your workout felt. Start asking what adaptation it created. And stay tuned for Part Two, where we’ll unpack WHY building and preserving muscle is so important for women - particularly as we age. Have a question or want to continue the conversation?
