How to Pray When You Feel Lonely

For people who have no one to talk to, and a God they've never really talked to. Every episode takes one lonely hour — the evening after the door closes, the Sunday afternoon, the day nobody asked about — and hands you a psalm written for it. You hear the psalm first. Then we look at how it's built: why David says the hard thing out loud instead of tidying it up, why the prayer ends without the situation fixed, why nothing gets taken back. This isn't company. It's short, and it ends with you saying something to God and putting the phone down. The point is that after a while you won't need the episode to do it. No advice on making friends. No explanation of why you're alone. Just the words, and who to say them to.

    How to pray when everyone else has someone

    For the feeling that's hard to admit to: looking at people who clearly have somebody, and going sour about it. Then feeling bad about the sourness. Asaph led worship for a living, and he wrote down that envy nearly finished him. He tells God he did all the right things for nothing. We read it, look at what actually changed for him — and what didn't — and then say the ugly part out loud instead of carrying it.

    How to pray when no one asks how you are

    For the hour after the door closes, when the day is over and there's nobody to tell it to. If you're lonely and you believe in God but have never actually talked to him about an ordinary Tuesday, this is a prayer written for that. David prayed Psalm 142 from a cave, while he was being hunted. He tells God nobody cares about him — and doesn't take it back. We read the psalm, look at how it's put together, and then say the day out loud.
