Ep. 3 | The Surprising Truth About Early-Onset Alzheimer’s (And The Quiz Doctors Get Wrong)

How well do we really understand early-onset Alzheimer's? In this episode of the Insane Gratitude podcast, hosts Donis Gil and Ed Krevitz are joined by Dr. Randy Beck to break down a revealing Medscape quiz originally designed for primary care physicians. With 57% of doctors getting one of the most critical screening questions wrong, it's more important than ever to advocate for your own cognitive health. We explore the actual age cutoff for early-onset Alzheimer's, the most effective cognitive screening tools, and what to look for on an MRI. Whether you are a caregiver, have family history, or simply want to stay informed about brain health, this episode is packed with essential, actionable knowledge. Key Highlights & Takeaways: The Age Cutoff: Discover why 65 years old is the official medical cutoff for early-onset Alzheimer's, and why symptoms in your 40s or 50s warrant immediate attention. The Best Screening Test: Learn about the Amsterdam Instrumental Activities of Daily Living Questionnaire (A-IADL-Q) and why it outperforms the widely used Mini-Cog test for early detection. The First Cognitive Domain to Go: Why language and executive function (struggling with routine procedures or finding words) are much stronger early indicators than sensory perception. MRI Diagnostics: Understand why atrophy (shrinking) in the medial temporal lobe is the most critical radiological finding for Alzheimer's memory loss. Monitoring Progression: The golden rule for medical reassessment: why you should be getting clinical check-ups every 6 to 12 months, and taking self-assessments every 3 months. Ep.2 | More Than Memory Loss: What Actually Happens Inside the Brain During Dementia

Welcome to Episode 2 of the Insane Gratitude Podcast. In this episode, hosts Donis Gil and Ed Kravitz are joined by Dr. Randy Beck to demystify one of the most frightening diagnoses a family can face: dementia. The team breaks down the critical differences between normal age-related cognitive decline and true dementia, explaining how dementia involves the loss of nerve function in the brain affecting coordination, reasoning, and daily living. Ed also shares a powerful personal story about a family member diagnosed in 2019 who found success through functional medicine. Key Highlights Dementia is not simply memory loss; it is the loss of nerve function in the brain that affects cognitive function, reasoning, and problem-solving. Short-term memory is usually affected first because the hippocampus is highly plastic and can lose connections quickly. Normal age-related cognitive decline does not necessarily mean a person will develop dementia. Primary dementia refers to neurodegenerative diseases where dementia is the primary illness, such as Alzheimer's disease and frontal temporal dementia. Secondary dementia is caused by other factors, like heavy metal poisoning or normal pressure hydrocephalus, and has the potential to be reversed. Early intervention is crucial to catch cognitive decline in the "yellow area" before a patient reaches an accelerated downward progression. In Alzheimer's disease, unstable Tau proteins can cause microtubules to unravel, leading to neurofibrillary tangles and amyloid plaques that disrupt neuron communication. Ep. 1 | The Origin Story: Why We Built a Resource Hub for Dementia and Mental Health Support

Welcome to the inaugural episode of the Insane Gratitude Podcast! Hosted by Ed Kravitz, Dr. Randy Beck, and Donis Gil, this podcast is dedicated to shining a light on the realities of dementia, Alzheimer's, and mental health. In our very first episode, Ed shares the deeply personal and heartbreaking story that started it all: navigating a devastating early-onset dementia diagnosis for a brilliant 55-year-old family member. Frustrated by the lack of centralized resources, the staggering out-of-pocket costs of functional medicine, and the sea of misinformation, Ed decided to build the solution his family desperately needed. Joined by functional medicine expert Dr. Beck and technology/rehab specialist Donis, the trio outlines their bold mission for Insane Gratitude: to create a comprehensive, honest, and accessible resource hub for families facing cognitive decline. In this episode, we cover: The Catalyst: Ed’s personal journey of trying to find out-of-the-box treatments for a loved one. The Financial Burden: Why crucial functional medicine treatments often cost families hundreds of thousands of dollars out-of-pocket. The Misinformation Epidemic: How to navigate the noise, avoid predatory "cures," and find fact-based neuroplasticity and functional medicine protocols. The Vision: What to expect from the Insane Gratitude website and future podcast episodes, from living wills and probate court to caregiver support and expert interviews.
