The Navy QB Double-Double: Ricky Dobbs Stands Alone

Send us Fan Mail Ricky Dobbs was a Georgia high school football quarterback targeting the usual names when a recruiter from the U.S. Naval Academy walks into his coach’s office and offers him a full scholarship on the spot. That becomes Dobbs' first step in establishing his Navy Football legacy. This is the story of how one recruiting visit, one crucial promise to let him play quarterback, and one stubborn belief in his own path reroute everything toward Annapolis.  Dobbs’ journey is also a crash course in what makes the Naval Academy and the triple option offense so demanding. Going from a shotgun system to life under center means every snap, every read, and every exchange has consequences.  But perseverance paid off in his defining breakthrough game; a historic comeback against Temple University. This was where Ricky Dobbs proved he could deliver under pressure when the usual game script falls apart.  From there, the story widens into big stages and bigger choices: questioning whether football is passion or expectation, committing to the long-term leadership value of the Naval Academy, and then backing it up against Ohio State, Missouri in the Texas Bowl, and Notre Dame in a near-flawless team win.  We close with the Army Navy game, the records, and the rare feat that puts Dobbs in a category of one. College Rowing's GOAT: Navy's Great Eight

Send us Fan Mail When floating debris claims all three of Navy's shells at the 1951 IRA Championships, the program looked to be in the hurt locker for a very long time. But the fact was that it marked the beginning of the most dominant run in the history of college rowing.  In today's episode of Forged At Annapolis, we tell the story of the Great Eight. This Navy Men’s Varsity 8 crew was formed following a humiliating day at the 1951 IRA Championships and went on to turn in one of the most dominant stretches in college rowing history, guided by coach Rusty Callow. With their complete destruction of Yale in the season's first dual,  the Mids send an early message that put the rest of the college rowing world on notice.  After that, the wins continued to pile up. One by one, every elite program in the country found themselves in the same place, behind the Navy crew with a decent amount of open water between them.  The story continues through to the 1952 IRA Championships, the Olympic Trials, and the Helsinki Olympics.
