Is Slower Weight Loss Actually Better? | Rapid vs. Gradual Weight Loss

Is slower weight loss actually better, healthier or easier to maintain? Or can a faster rate of weight loss work just as well? In this episode, I'm looking at rapid vs. gradual weight loss and some of the things we're commonly told about losing weight quickly. We get into adherence, hunger, metabolism, muscle loss, weight regain, and why I don't think there's one “best” rate of fat loss for everyone. I also talk about how I decide on a rate of weight loss with my own clients, why someone with more body fat may be able to tolerate a larger calorie deficit, and why a slower approach can sometimes make more sense when flexibility and habit building are the priority. Studies mentioned in this episode: Nackers LM, Ross KM, Perri MG. The association between rate of initial weight loss and long-term success in obesity treatment: does slow and steady win the race? International Journal of Behavioral Medicine, 2010. PubMed Purcell K, et al. The effect of rate of weight loss on long-term weight management: a randomised controlled trial. The Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology, 2014. PubMed Coutinho SR, et al. The impact of rate of weight loss on body composition and compensatory mechanisms during weight reduction: a randomized control trial. Clinical Nutrition, 2018.
