    Your Blood Work Decoded

Most people get their blood work done, hear 'everything looks normal,' and leave thinking they're fine. But normal and optimal are not the same thing — and that gap can quietly build toward chronic disease for years before standard labs catch it. In this episode Steve and Tina go beyond the standard panel and teach you exactly how to read your results, what to push your doctor for, and how to use your numbers as a real longevity tool.   What You'll Learn Lab reference ranges are based on population averages — not the healthiest people. You can be in range and still be trending in the wrong direction. Fasting insulin is one of the most important metabolic markers and is often not ordered unless you ask. Optimal is under 6–7 microunits/mL. The triglyceride-to-HDL ratio is one of the strongest predictors of insulin resistance and cardiovascular risk. Divide your triglycerides by your HDL — below 2 is good, below 1 is excellent. TSH alone doesn't give you the full thyroid picture. Ask for free T3 and free T4 as well. Vitamin D deficiency affects over 40% of Americans. The gap between 'not deficient' (20 ng/mL) and optimal (50–70 ng/mL) is enormous — and impactful. Homocysteine is a cardiovascular and cognitive risk marker that's rarely ordered but worth asking for — and B vitamins directly regulate it.   Your Challenge This Week Pull your most recent labs and calculate your triglyceride-to-HDL ratio. Divide the two numbers and write it down. If you don't have recent labs — book them. You cannot manage what you don't measure.   Quote of the Episode "Your labs are a report card on your lifestyle. Use them." — Tina   Resources & Further Reading Book: Why We Get Sick by Benjamin Bikman, PhD Book: Outlive by Peter Attia, MD Labs to request: fasting insulin, HbA1c, hsCRP, free T3, free T4, homocysteine, vitamin D (25-OH)

    Live With Purpose

Ten episodes. Ten longevity keys. And now the one that ties them all together.   In the Season 1 finale, Steve and Tina close with what they believe is the deepest longevity factor of all — purpose. Not the grand, sweeping, change-the-world kind (though that counts too). The everyday kind. The reason you get out of bed. The thing that needs you. Research shows that a strong sense of purpose is one of the most powerful and independently predictive markers of a long, vital life — and today’s episode breaks down exactly why.   They dig into the science, share their personal purpose statements, and then walk through all ten Season 1 episodes — a complete recap of the framework for living long and living well.   What We Cover The MIDUS study — purpose as a measurable, independent predictor of longevity Purpose and disease: lower risk of heart attack, stroke, and Alzheimer’s Why purpose buffers the biological impact of chronic stress The retirement trap — why losing purpose accelerates physical decline Ikigai and Plan de Vida — purpose as lived by the world’s longest-lived cultures Why purpose doesn’t have to be a grand mission — the power of small, consistent meaning Generativity — the drive to invest in the next generation and why it matters for vitality Faith as the most durable form of purpose Steve and Tina share their personal purpose statements Full Season 1 recap — all 10 longevity keys in one place   Key Takeaways Purpose is not soft science. High-purpose individuals have longer telomeres, lower inflammatory markers, and more regulated cortisol responses. It changes your physiology. The oldest people in the Blue Zones don’t all have dramatic life missions — many describe small, consistent, genuine meaning. That’s enough. Retirement without purpose is a documented health risk. What you retire to matters as much as when you retire. Generativity — living for something beyond your own lifespan — is one of the strongest predictors of vitality and life satisfaction in older adults. Your health serves your purpose. Fitness, nutrition, sleep, and stress management are the vehicle — purpose is the destination that makes the vehicle worth maintaining.   Season 1 — All 10 Longevity Keys   Episode 1  —  What Longevity Really Means  — Healthspan vs. lifespan, compressing morbidity, and what a great life at 80 actually looks like. Episode 2  —  Move to Live  — Muscle as a longevity organ, VO2 max, grip strength, and why daily movement is as important as formal exercise. Episode 3  —  The Silent Threat  — Metabolic health, insulin resistance, the five markers to know, and the labs to ask for. Episode 4  —  Eat to Last  — Nutrition from the world’s longest-lived populations, the longevity plate, protein targets, and why ultra-processed food is a documented longevity threat. Episode 5  —  Sleep: The Longevity Superpower  — Your brain’s waste-clearance system, deep sleep and Alzheimer’s risk, and the practical tools to protect your sleep. Episode 6  —  Stress, the Nervous System & Recovery  — Telomere shortening, HRV as a longevity biomarker, and the evidence-backed tools that actually activate recovery. Episode 7  —  Connection Is Medicine  — The Harvard study on relationships and longevity, why social isolation carries the same mortality risk as obesity, and how to build real community. Episode 8  —  Joseph Schwartz — Real Formulas  — The supplement industry from the inside: what works, what doesn’t, how to read a label, and how to think about supplementation the right way. Episode 9  —  Dr. Brady Sandercock  — Movement quality, injury prevention, the relationship between physical therapy and longevity, and why getting ahead of pain is always better than waiting. Episode 10  —  Live With Purpose  — Your why is a longevity key. Move Better, Live Longer

Episode Title: Move Better, Live Longer: A Physical Therapist’s Blueprint for a Longer, More Capable Life Episode Description: How well you move today is a preview of how you’ll live at 80. In this episode, Steve and Tina sit down with Dr. Brady Sandercock, a Doctor of Physical Therapy and strength and conditioning coach, to talk about why mobility, strength, and balance are some of the biggest levers on healthspan. What's Actually In Your Supplements

The supplement aisle is one of the most confusing places in health and fitness — and it’s also one of the most exploited. In this episode, Steve and Tina sit down with Joe Swartz, founder of Real Formulas, for a no-nonsense conversation about what’s actually in your supplements, what the research actually supports, and how to stop wasting money on products that don’t deliver.   Joe built Real Formulas after years of frustration with an industry where marketing budgets outpace ingredient budgets — and where "third-party tested" can mean almost anything. He shares what he learned building a company that does things the hard (and more expensive) way, and what every person serious about longevity needs to understand before they buy another bottle.   🎁  LISTENER EXCLUSIVE: Get a discount on all Real Formulas orders over $50 — use code REAL120 at checkout.  realformulas.com   What We Cover How the supplement industry is regulated — and where the gaps are What "third-party tested" really means and why it matters How to read a supplement label like someone who knows what they're looking at The red flags that tell you a brand is cutting corners Which supplements actually have research behind them for longevity What's trending right now that Joe thinks is mostly hype Underrated supplements that deserve more attention Food vs. supplements: how to think about both Does your supplement routine need to change as you age? How Real Formulas products are formulated — from idea to shelf The product Joe refused to make because the science didn't hold up Joe's own daily supplement stack   Key Takeaways The supplement industry is far less regulated than most people assume — that means the burden of research is on you. Third-party testing isn't just a badge. Know what certification body is doing the testing and what they're testing for. More is not more. Stacking too many supplements without a strategy can be expensive, redundant, or counterproductive. Quality supplements cost more for a reason — but not every premium price tag means premium ingredients. Learn the difference. The non-negotiables for longevity aren't complicated. Protein. Omega-3s. Vitamin D. Magnesium. Most people fall short on all four. Your supplement needs do shift with age — especially around muscle preservation, inflammation, and cellular repair.   About Joe Swartz & Real Formulas Joe Swartz is the founder and owner of Real Formulas, a supplement brand built on a simple premise: put what's on the label in the bottle, use doses that actually work, and don't cut corners because the customer won't notice. After years of frustration as a consumer and fitness enthusiast watching brands prioritize marketing over formulation, Joe set out to build something different — a company where the science drives the product, not the other way around.   Website:  realformulas.com   Listener Discount:  Use code REAL120 for a discount on orders over $50   Connect With The 120 Podcast Email:  the120podcast63@gmail.com

CONNECTION IS MEDICINE: RELATIONSHIPS, COMMUNITY & LONGEVITY

After 85 years of research and thousands of participants, the Harvard Study of Adult Development arrived at a finding that surprised even its own researchers: the quality of your relationships matters more for a long, healthy life than your cholesterol, your fitness level, or your genes.   ABOUT THIS EPISODE In Episode 7, Steve and Tina make the case that connection is not soft — it is survival. We walk through the physiology of how relationships affect cortisol, immune function, and inflammation; examine what every single Blue Zone has in common when it comes to community; and give practical guidance for building real connection in a world that has never been more digitally connected and more relationally isolated at the same time.   KEY TAKEAWAYS Social connection is as powerful a predictor of longevity as not smoking — and more powerful than obesity or physical inactivity as a risk factor for early death. Loneliness increases all-cause mortality by approximately 26%. The U.S. Surgeon General declared it a public health epidemic. Strong social connections lower cortisol, reduce inflammatory markers, and improve immune function through direct physiological pathways. Every single Blue Zone culture has strong community structure at its center — moai in Okinawa, faith communities in Loma Linda, daily social gathering in Sardinia. It's quality, not quantity. One deep, honest friendship is more protective than fifty shallow acquaintances. Passive social media (scrolling, comparing) increases loneliness. Active connection (calls, in-person time) is where the benefit is.   YOUR CHALLENGE THIS WEEK Reach out to someone meaningful this week — not a text, a real call or an in-person conversation. Tell them why they matter to you. It sounds simple. It is also one of the most powerful things you can do for your own longevity.   QUOTE OF THE EPISODE "Connection is not soft. It is survival." — Tina   RESOURCES & REFERENCES Book: The Good Life by Robert Waldinger & Marc Schulz (Harvard Study of Adult Development) Research: Social isolation and mortality — Holt-Lunstad et al., PLOS Medicine U.S. Surgeon General's Advisory on Loneliness (2023) Book: Blue Zones by Dan Buettner (community chapters)     Enjoyed this episode? Stress, the Nervous System & the Art of Recovery

Chronic stress doesn't just feel bad — it's biologically aging you. In Episode 6, Steve and Tina go into the science of what unresolved stress actually does at the cellular level, including its measurable effect on telomere length — the molecular clock of aging. They make the case that recovery isn't a reward for hard work, it's a biological requirement for longevity.   What You'll Learn Chronic stress accelerates telomere shortening — the equivalent of biologically aging up to a decade faster than your peers Cortisol when chronically elevated breaks down muscle, impairs immunity, raises blood pressure, stores belly fat, and drives inflammation Most people spend almost no real time in parasympathetic (rest-and-repair) mode — low-grade stress overdrive from screens and connectivity is the default state Heart rate variability (HRV) is a powerful biomarker of nervous system health and recovery capacity — trackable with modern wearables Extended-exhale breathwork (4 counts in, 6–8 out) is the fastest evidence-backed way to shift into a parasympathetic state Stress is not the enemy — the absence of adequate recovery is. The two must be in balance   Your Challenge This Week Add one deliberate recovery practice every day this week: 5 minutes of slow breathwork, a 20-minute walk outside without your phone, or 10 minutes of intentional quiet before bed. Pick one and stay consistent for 7 days.   Quote of the Episode "Recovery is not weakness. It's where adaptation and repair happen." — Tina   Resources & Further Reading Book: The Telomere Effect by Dr. Elizabeth Blackburn & Dr. Elissa Epel Research: Shinrin-yoku (forest bathing) and cortisol reduction — Li et al. EAT TO LAST: NUTRITION PRINCIPLES FOR A LONG, VITAL LIFE

NUTRITION PRINCIPLES FOR A LONG, VITAL LIFE   You eat roughly three times a day. That's over a thousand opportunities every year to either invest in your longevity or slowly undermine it. The good news: you don't need a perfect diet. You need the right framework.   ABOUT THIS EPISODE In Episode 4, Steve and Tina cut through the dietary noise — no diet wars, no extremes — and build a clear, evidence-based nutritional framework for a long, vital life. We look at what the longest-lived people on earth actually eat, what the three biggest dietary threats to longevity are, and how to build a plate that works for your body and your future.   KEY TAKEAWAYS Blue Zone populations eat mostly whole, minimally processed plant foods — but they're not all vegetarian. Plants are the foundation, not the whole building. Protein is non-negotiable, especially as you age. Your needs go UP with age, not down — target 0.7 to 1g per pound of body weight. Ultra-processed food is one of the most well-documented threats to longevity in the research. If you do one thing, reduce it. Added sugar drives insulin resistance, inflammation, and metabolic dysfunction. The average American eats almost twice the recommended amount. Food diversity matters — eating 30+ different plant foods per week significantly increases gut microbiome diversity and is associated with better health outcomes. The 80/20 principle: 80% whole, nutrient-dense foods, 20% flexibility. Perfection is the enemy of consistency.
