EP05 | The Flannan Isles Mystery & The Lost Keepers

On December 26, 1900, a relief ship arrived at a remote lighthouse off the coast of Scotland. The three keepers stationed there were nowhere to be found. Inside, the lighthouse was orderly, the equipment had been tended to, and everything appeared ready for another night. But James Ducat, Thomas Marshall, and Donald MacArthur had vanished without a trace. More than 125 years later, the disappearance of the Flannan Isles lighthouse keepers remains one of Scotland's most enduring maritime mysteries. In this episode of The Real Unreal, we travel to Eilean Mòr, a desolate island in the North Atlantic, to investigate what really happened in December 1900. We examine the keepers' final recorded activities, the unsettling clues discovered inside the lighthouse, and the extraordinary destruction found at the island's West Landing. The official investigation concluded that the men were likely swept into the Atlantic by an enormous wave. But that explanation left troubling questions unanswered. Why would three experienced lighthouse keepers abandon their station? And what could have compelled one of them to rush outside without his protective clothing? From the science of monstrous ocean waves to ghost ships, foreign spies, and other extraordinary theories, we explore the evidence, separate historical fact from folklore, and revisit a mystery that has fascinated the world for generations. Three men disappeared. No bodies were ever recovered. And what happened during their final hours on Eilean Mòr remains unknown. THE REAL UNREAL Some stories sound unreal. These actually happened. EP04 | The Strange Disappearance of Mary Day

In 1981, thirteen-year-old Mary Day disappeared from her family’s home in Seaside, California. But unlike most missing-child cases, there was no frantic search, no posters, and no investigation. Mary’s disappearance wasn’t even reported to police. For more than twenty years, she was simply gone. That changed in 2002, when Mary’s sisters finally told authorities what they remembered about the last time they saw her. Their account was disturbing enough that Seaside police began investigating a disappearance that had occurred more than two decades earlier—and what they uncovered made them suspect Mary hadn’t simply run away. As detectives reconstructed the Day family’s life in 1981, they began to focus on one particular night and the possibility that something terrible had happened inside the family home. Despite the years that had passed, investigators believed there might still be evidence waiting for them. And they found some. By then, police weren’t simply searching for a missing girl. They were building what they believed could be a murder case. Then, just as the investigation was gaining momentum, something happened that should have answered the biggest question of all. Instead, it created an entirely new mystery. The Mary Day case would ultimately involve two decades of silence, conflicting memories, forensic evidence, an unexpected discovery thousands of miles away, and questions that investigators struggled to reconcile. Even after the case appeared to have an answer, some of the people who knew it best weren’t entirely convinced. So what really happened to Mary Day? In EP04 of The Real Unreal, we follow Mary’s story from her disappearance in 1981 through the investigation that began 21 years later—and the extraordinary turn that transformed a decades-old missing-person case into something much harder to explain. EP03 | Ada Blackjack: The Woman Wrangel Island Couldn't Kill — Part 2

When Part 1 ended, Ada Blackjack was alone on Wrangel Island with a desperately ill Lorne Knight. The other three men had disappeared across the frozen sea months earlier, food was running out, and no rescue had come. In Part 2, Ada’s fight for survival becomes something even more extraordinary. She teaches herself to hunt and trap, cares for Knight through the final stages of his illness, and prepares for the possibility that no one is coming for her. When a ship finally appears on the horizon, Ada has survived nearly two years in the Arctic, but getting home is only the beginning of what happens next. Her rescue turns her into an international sensation. Newspapers want her story. Money is owed. Diaries disappear and reappear with pages missing and passages erased. Accusations begin to fly. And Ada finds herself caught in a battle over who gets to tell the story of Wrangel Island, and who gets paid for it. This is the conclusion of the remarkable true story of Ada Blackjack: the woman hired as a seamstress who became the sole survivor of one of the Arctic’s most disastrous expeditions. The Third Man Factor | The In-Between #01

What happens when you’re completely alone, fighting to survive—and suddenly someone appears to help you? It’s called the Third Man Factor, a strange phenomenon reported by people pushed to the limits of human endurance. Climbers, sailors, explorers, pilots and disaster survivors have described seeing, hearing or sensing another person who shouldn’t be there—often at exactly the moment they need help most. In the first episode of The In-Between, we explore remarkable accounts involving 9/11 survivor Ron DiFrancesco, Antarctic explorer Ernest Shackleton, solo sailor Joshua Slocum, Everest climber Frank Smythe and Charles Lindbergh—and the fascinating science that might explain why the human brain can seemingly create a companion when survival is on the line. Is the Third Man an extraordinary survival mechanism hidden somewhere inside the human mind? Or could there be something more to these experiences than we currently understand? The In-Between is a new series from The Real Unreal, exploring strange phenomena, unexplained experiences and fascinating mysteries in the weeks between full-length episodes. New episodes of The Real Unreal arrive every Monday, alternating between full-length stories and episodes of The In-Between. Stay curious. THE REAL UNREAL Some stories sound unreal. EP02 | Ada Blackjack: The Woman Wrangel Island Couldn't Kill — Part 1

In September 1921, a small expedition landed on Wrangel Island—a remote, icebound island in the Arctic Ocean north of Siberia. There were five people in the party: four young men with dreams of exploration and adventure, and a 23-year-old Iñupiat woman named Ada Blackjack. Ada was not an explorer. She had no desire to conquer the Arctic, claim territory, or make history. She was a single mother from Nome, Alaska, and she desperately needed money to care for her young son, Bennett, who was suffering from tuberculosis. She had been hired as the expedition’s seamstress and cook, with the understanding that other Iñupiat families would be joining the group. They never did. Instead, Ada found herself the only woman—and the only Indigenous member—of a tiny expedition attempting something extraordinarily dangerous: occupying Wrangel Island for two years and claiming it for the British Empire. Behind the plan was controversial Arctic explorer Vilhjalmur Stefansson, a man famous for promoting his belief in the “Friendly Arctic”—the idea that properly skilled explorers could live off the land and thrive in an environment most people considered nearly unsurvivable. The expedition arrived with limited supplies and enormous confidence. At first, remarkably, things seemed to work. They built their camp. They hunted. They trapped foxes. They learned the rhythms of the island. Ada, initially terrified and deeply unhappy, slowly began to find her place among the men. Relationships that had started badly improved. For a time, Wrangel Island seemed almost to be proving Stefansson right. But the Arctic had other plans. When the ship expected to reach them the following summer failed to arrive, the expedition was forced to prepare for another winter. Supplies dwindled. Isolation deepened. And then one member of the party—Lorne Knight—began showing signs of an illness every Arctic explorer feared. Scurvy. In Part 1 of Ada Blackjack: The Woman Wrangel Island Couldn't Kill, we follow the expedition from its controversial beginnings through its first year on Wrangel Island: why these five people were sent there, the strange geopolitical ambitions behind the mission, Ada’s difficult adjustment to life at camp, the group’s attempts to survive off the land, the failed effort to reach them—and the moment their Arctic adventure begins turning into something far more dangerous. Because what happened next would leave Ada Blackjack facing circumstances almost impossible to imagine. And her story was only beginning. Part 2 continues the story of the Wrangel Island expedition and Ada Blackjack’s extraordinary fight for survival. The Real Unreal explores extraordinary true stories, strange history, unexplained events, survival, mystery, and those moments when reality becomes almost impossible to believe.
