    Jesus Wept

John 11:17-35 - On the day Grandma left this world, two words from John 11 feel especially precious: "Jesus wept." Jesus met Martha in her questions and Mary in her grief, and He does not require us to hide anger, hurt, or tears from Him. As we mourn those we love, we can bring the fullness of our grief to the One who knows what it is to weep—while still remembering who He is and keeping our eyes on Him. He Is Trustworthy and Worthy

Psalm 100 - As Grandma nears the end of her life, Psalm 100 gives us somewhere to turn our eyes: toward thanksgiving, praise, and the goodness of God. Grief does not erase what God has done or make Him less worthy; even when life does not unfold the way we wanted, we can thank Him for the lives we have been given, remember the preciousness of our days, and learn that He is trustworthy even in the hardest places. Who Was I Created to Be?

Psalm 139 - Psalm 139 once became a place of comfort during anxious nights, and years later its words return in another hospital room while sitting beside Grandma. God knows our thoughts, surrounds us, formed us, and invites us to let Him search what still needs to change. Instead of only asking what we were created to do, perhaps we also need to ask who God created us to be—and learn to abide, rest, trust, and allow Him to shape us into that person. Through It All, My Eyes Are on You

Psalm 23 - As we walk through painful and uncertain days, Psalm 23 reminds us that the Shepherd does not promise a path without valleys—He promises His presence within them. With the words of "It Is Well" echoing in our minds, we are reminded that peace does not require pretending death, grief, or uncertainty are easy. Through it all, we can keep turning our eyes toward God, trusting His presence, comfort, goodness, and lovingkindness even in the face of death. Come to Me

Matthew 11:25-30 - After another day at the hospital, Jesus' invitation to the weary and burdened felt especially close: "Come to Me." He does not reprimand us for being tired or demand that we become strong enough first; He invites us to come, learn from Him, and find rest for our souls. Some days make our need for His strength easier to recognize, but the invitation is just as true in an ordinary day as it is in a difficult one. Even If

Habakkuk 3:2, 16-19 - Sometimes one phone call is enough to bring everything else in life to a stop. Habakkuk does not hide fear, trembling, or distress, but neither does he remain there: even while facing what may come, he turns his eyes toward God and chooses to rejoice in the God of his salvation. We can be honest about fear, grief, worry, and pain while still learning to say, "Even if," and turning toward the One we trust. When We Turn Things Around

Isaiah 29:1-16 - Familiar verses can make it easy to move quickly toward what we already understand, but slowing down in Isaiah 29 brought the surrounding warning into view. God confronts people who honor Him with their lips while their hearts remain far away, and Jesus later uses Isaiah's words while confronting human tradition that invalidates God's Word. The passage leaves us asking whether we are truly allowing God to shape our understanding—or turning things around and placing ourselves, our teachers, or our traditions above the One who formed us. Tending the Garden of Our Minds

Isaiah 28:23-29 - Isaiah closes the chapter with the picture of a farmer who knows when to plow, how to plant, and how each crop should be harvested—a picture pointing us toward God's wisdom, justice, and sovereignty in how He deals with His people. That image also led us into other Scriptures that teach us how to tend the garden of our minds: acknowledging anxiety and despair, casting our cares on God, taking thoughts captive, remembering His faithfulness, and deliberately cultivating what is good and true.
