He Hated Off-Grid Life… Until He Had to Leave It What happens when you take a child who was spending most of his days playing video games and watching TV, and suddenly put him into an off-grid life where there is no internet, no endless entertainment, and no choice but to learn how to work? In this deeply personal episode of the Pre Prepared Patriot Podcast, I sit down with my son Nate and look back at the years we spent living off grid. At first, Nate hated it. He went from video games and sitting on the couch to chopping wood, clearing land, building a home, working with animals, learning plumbing and electrical work, running equipment, producing firewood, and helping create the life our family depended on. But something unexpected happened. The boy who initially wanted nothing to do with that lifestyle eventually grew to love it so much that leaving the land brought him to tears. Now, at 18 years old, Nate reflects on what that experience gave him—and what it took away. We talk about work ethic, self-reliance, family, survival skills, technology, video-game addiction, parenting, the modern workforce, and whether we've traded genuine satisfaction for convenience. We also talk about something I believe many parents struggle with today: Are we really preparing our children for life, or are we preparing them to depend on everyone else to do things for them? Nate explains how learning to work with his hands gave him confidence, creativity, independence, and skills he still carries today. He also shares why he would return to off-grid living "in a heartbeat." This isn't a story about a perfect family or a perfect lifestyle. We talk openly about the struggles, the mistakes, the frustrations, and ultimately the memories and lessons that stayed with us. And perhaps the biggest lesson of all: Don't wait for the perfect moment. Start somewhere. As Nate puts it, "It's either one day or day one." --- Support the Podcast If you enjoy these conversations and would like to help me keep creating them, I would sincerely appreciate your support.
