It always starts small. A message. A gift nobody asked for. Someone who keeps turning up where you are, more often than chance allows. By the time it is obviously dangerous it has usually been going on for months, and by then the person doing it has built a version of you inside their head that you have no access to and cannot argue with. Stalker Files is about those cases. Real ones, from around the world, followed from the first unwanted contact to wherever they ended. No interviews. No dramatisation. No speculation about what anyone was thinking. Just what happened, in order, with the detail left in: the times, the places, the words people actually used. Every episode is built from court records and reporting from the time, and every source is listed in the notes. Some of these people survived. Some of them did not. New episodes twice a week.

The Will She Wrote at Twenty

Shiori Ino was twenty years old, a university student in Saitama Prefecture, when she wrote her will. She had met a man named Kazuhito Komatsu ten weeks earlier, at an amusement arcade near Omiya Station. He lied about his name, his age, and his business. Within weeks he was pressing luxury gifts on her and screaming at her in the street when she refused them. He called her at home using a number she had never given him. When she ended it, he and his brother came to her family's house and made what her mother understood as a threat against her younger brother. She went to Ageo police station the next morning with a recording of it. She went back the following day with both her parents. Over four months she brought them letters, posters, and a licence plate. Officers wrote her complaint down, then altered it. Komatsu paid a man twenty million yen to have her killed, then flew to Okinawa to be elsewhere when it happened. On the twenty-sixth of October 1999, Shiori Ino was stabbed twice outside Okegawa Station and died within the hour. Police then told reporters she had been a girl who liked expensive brands. Three officers were later convicted of falsifying her complaint. Komatsu's body was found in a lake in Hokkaido with a note saying he had meant to do it all along. Japan's first anti-stalking law came into force the following year. Her father still lectures on her case, sometimes at police academies.
