    Pete Golding's Most Important Player Saturday Might Not Play

    Pete Golding was asked Monday how important it is to have a backup quarterback who can step in and run the offense. He did not answer with this season. He answered with last season. You start last year with Austin, he said, and then Austin gets banged up, and then this guy named Trinidad comes in and has the year he has. That is the whole case in a sentence: the quarterback the opposing head coach just called probably the best in the country was the backup fourteen months ago. Golding went further - if you do not have a quarterback who can operate the offense at a high level, it is hard to win in this league, and if you do not have that, you are not going to win a championship. It can be as simple as a helmet coming off. He called Deuce Knight a big piece of the offseason puzzle. Then in segment two: Kirby Smart called Trinidad Chambliss probably the best quarterback in the country. But if you ask which Ole Miss player the NFL likes most, the answer has been Will Echoles for a while - Bleacher Report's updated board had him eighth overall, ahead of Chambliss. He is on the Outland and Bronko Nagurski watch lists, made his 23rd straight start against Auburn, and scored the game's first touchdown from the one. Golding was asked about him and answered about something else entirely: the best thing about Will is that he is not going to bring it up. The charity work in Oxford and back home in Houston.     The Committee Ranks Ole Miss Tonight. Pete Golding Won't Watch

    The first College Football Playoff rankings of the season land tonight, 7 to 8 p.m. Eastern on ESPN. Ole Miss goes in 12th in the Associated Press poll and 12th in the coaches poll, at 6-2 overall and 4-2 in the league. Both published projections I saw - ESPN's and CBS Sports' - have the Rebels around 11th. ESPN's note was the interesting part: it credited Ole Miss with the second-toughest schedule in the country entering Week 9, behind only Oklahoma, and pointed out that both losses came on the road against teams that are still ranked. Pete Golding was asked Monday whether he would watch and said no. His reason is better than the usual coach answer: when the first poll came out last season, several teams in it did not make the playoff and several teams that made it were not in it. He also conceded the number is not meaningless - it matters for recruiting and for public perception. Then in segment two: Kirby Smart was asked about a real imbalance. Since the 2024 television deal, Georgia is tied for last in the SEC in home night games and tied for the lead in road night games. He agreed with the premise and then took the air out of it - they play on the road at night because they have been highly ranked, they have not had as many premier matchups, they never play Florida at home, and they have not had the home opportunity since 2015. Then: he does not get into the conspiracy theories, everybody else does, and he worries about playing the games. He is right on the facts.     Four Sacks, And The Ole Miss Running Back Fight Nobody Wants

    Four sacks, ten tackles for loss and two forced fumbles against Auburn. Eight days after giving up 121 rushing yards in the last ten and a half minutes at Texas, that is a different defense. Tah'j Butler had two sacks. Suntarine Perkins had two more — the 21st and 22nd of his career, moving him to fourth on the Ole Miss all-time list. Keaton Thomas and Anthony Robinson III each forced the first fumble of their careers, and Ole Miss recovered both. In fairness: Auburn has allowed 30 sacks this season and Georgia has not. Gunner Stockton is not Byrum Brown, and Georgia ran for better than 200 yards against Florida. A season high against the worst protection in the league proves less than it looks like. Then the argument your comment section started Saturday night. Shekai Mills-Knight went 16 carries for 71 yards and a touchdown, both career highs, and Ole Miss fans immediately wanted him starting against Georgia. The case against isn't a knock on him. Makhi Frazier took 17 carries for 56 in the same game, Trinidad Chambliss ran seven times for 65, and three Ole Miss backs cleared fifty yards — the offense ran for 224 without Kewan Lacy. And every time Mills-Knight went outside, Auburn snuffed it. Georgia held Florida under sixty rushing yards. The question may answer itself. Who gets the first carry Saturday night?     Ole Miss Won By 30 And Is Still A Home Underdog To Georgia

    Ole Miss beat Auburn 45-15 on Saturday and opened the week as an underdog in its own stadium. That is not an insult. It is information. The numbers, with a book and a pull time: FanDuel, Sunday morning November 1. Georgia favored by 3.5 in Oxford, total 56.5, Georgia -150 and Ole Miss +125. Seven days earlier Ole Miss was a 13.5-point favorite over Auburn and won by thirty. The market watched that game and moved the Rebels to a home dog anyway. In fairness, a line is a price and not a prediction, and it moves all week. Arkansas is a 10.5-point favorite over that same Auburn team on Saturday, which says the market did not downgrade Auburn much after Oxford. Then there is the argument every Ole Miss fan will make this week: Auburn beat Georgia 27-24 in Athens, Ole Miss just beat Auburn by 30. True, and a trap. Run it backwards — Florida beat Ole Miss 52-28, and Georgia just beat Florida 27-8 in Atlanta. Same logic, four-touchdown Georgia win. Nobody believes that. Common opponents don't decide football games. Matchups do. The real Auburn lesson is that Georgia can be beaten by a team with a quarterback who runs — and Ole Miss has one of those again.     Three Shows Agree: Only Ole Miss Can Beat Ole Miss Saturday

    Three different shows previewed this game this week and all three ended up in the same place without quite meaning to: Auburn cannot beat Ole Miss. Only Ole Miss can beat Ole Miss. Crain & Cone said it at the top and again at the bottom - it has to be a combination of Ole Miss messing it up and Auburn playing well enough to take advantage, and when you do not have as good of players, every opportunity has to be taken. They pointed at the dropped interception against LSU that turned into an LSU score. Against Georgia they did not drop it, and Georgia turned it over three times. Same offense, three weeks apart: 192 rushing yards in Athens, 67 against LSU. Segment two is the one category where Ole Miss is genuinely worse. A prediction show this week had Ole Miss 126th of 138 in explosive pass plays allowed. That is their number, not the school's, and it could not be confirmed against a release. The catch: the same show has Auburn 87th, and only one of these teams has the receivers to punish it. Aaron Murray, who is on the call Saturday, said the path is to make Ole Miss one-dimensional and put the game on the quarterback - and that Auburn has to win first and second down to do it.     Beating Auburn Does Nothing For Pete Golding's Playoff Case

    Locked On College Football called Saturday a look-ahead spot. The trap is not Auburn. The trap is that beating Auburn buys Ole Miss nothing at all. Their host laid it out on Wednesday: Halloween look-ahead week, Georgia eight days later in a third meeting inside 365 days, and a home trap game Ole Miss has to survive or miss the playoff. My answer was that the Texas loss is what removes the trap - you do not stroll into Saturday after giving one away. Segment two is the résumé math. Beating Auburn does not move you. The win that was supposed to carry this schedule was Louisville, and Louisville is 4-3 with a defense that has struggled all year - call them 8-4 when it is done. That does not carry a two-loss team into the field. So it is binary. Win out and you are almost certainly in, and probably in Atlanta. Lose one and it is over. Style points no longer matter - win the last five by three apiece and you are still playing in December. To be fair: their host pushed back and put a two-loss Ole Miss that beats Georgia around seventh or eighth, where teams can pass you. He might be right. It still ends the same way.     Crossover Hits: The Throwing Motion Auburn Can't Hide From Ole Miss

    Auburn's quarterback has a windup — and on the throw Auburn runs most, that windup is a tax Ole Miss gets to collect. Byrum Brown leads the SEC in quarterback run game, per Pete Golding on Monday. But Locked On Auburn brought up his throwing motion unprompted on our crossover: with that windup, the ball takes a while to get there. Auburn leans harder and harder on quick throws behind the line of scrimmage, out wide — the exact pass that needs a fast release. Golding described the same picture from the other side: Auburn splits receivers out far enough to create a numbers issue, and the key is creating negative yardage plays early to force obvious passing downs. Segment two: Auburn has already faced very good corners this season and they have not affected Auburn's games — not because they lost, but because the offense never asked them a question. Their own show said this offense neutralizes elite corner play. So Ole Miss's secondary gets judged on tackling in space, which is exactly what Golding says failed at Texas. The honest counterweight: Auburn's receivers will run real routes eventually, and that 80-yard arm is sitting right there if Ole Miss loads up on screens.     Crossover Hits: Auburn Isn't Measuring Saturday by the Scoreboard

    Auburn is not measuring Saturday by the scoreboard, and a team that is not chasing a number is the hardest kind to put away. On our weekly crossover with Locked On Auburn I asked what a successful season looks like over there. The answer was not a win total. It was wanting to see who this team is and what culture Alex Golesh is building. Their show put 7-5 on the table as acceptable and 7-4 into the Iron Bowl as a good first year. Segment two: the 38-17 loss to LSU at Jordan-Hare on Oct. 24 does not tell you what you think. Auburn has lost plenty lately — by three, by seven, the heartbreaking kind. Losing by three scores at home is new, and nobody on that roster knows yet how they respond to it. The honest counterweight: the simplest reading is that LSU is better and Auburn is four and three. Maybe. But the last time nobody gave Auburn a chance they went to Athens and beat the No. 1 team in America — eleven days ago.
