Devo - “Wiggly World” (1979)This wiggly little tune comes from a little band from Akron, OH. It was on their second album for Warner Bros. called Duty Now For The Future and released in 1979. After seeing Devo on SNL my best friend Brian bought their first album Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo! which we listened to over and over. By the time I had enough allowance money saved up to buy a Devo record Duty… had just come out. I bought it without hearing a single song. It quickly and has remained my favorite Devo record of all time.2. Bush Tetras - “Too Many Creeps” (1980)New York’s Bush Tetras formed in 1979 after guitarist Pat Place had left her original no wave band The Contortions. The 4 piece took its name from a tiny African primate called a “bush baby” and combined it with a fish called a “neon tetra”. In 1980, the band released their debut 7” EP called Too Many Creeps on 99 Records, a small independent label from Greenwich Village, who also put out releases by Glenn Branca, ESG & Liquid Liquid.3. ESG - “Come Away” (1983)ESG is an American a dance punk band from the South Bronx that formed in 1978 when four Scroggins sisters and their and friend Tito Libran. The bands name is derived from Emerald, Sapphire & Gold, which emerald and sapphire are Valerie and Renee Scroggins’ birthstones and gold is for a record certification. They were discovered by Tony Wilson of Factory Records who release their 1st single “Moody” in 1980. This gained the attention of local label 99 Records who subsequently released the bands first full length called Come Away in 1983.4. The Rogers Sisters - ‘“I Dig A Hole” (2002)The Rogers Sisters were a Brooklyn based group from 1999–2007 formed by two former members of New York math rock band Ruby Falls. The sisters Laura & Jennifer Rogers and bassist/vocalist Miyuki Furtado quickly gained attention during the Brooklyn warehouse renaissance. Often sharing stages with Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Liars, Interpol, and The Kills. Their debut Purely Evil for Troubleman Unlimited sent them all over the US and garnered hype & a tour in the UK. They eventually signed with Too Pure Records releasing two more full lengths before calling it a day. This track is a favorite of mine as it features my good friend Miyuki on vocals. I had the pleasure to play in a couple of Baltimore bands with him.5. Au Pairs - “We’re So Cool” (1981)I discovered Birmingham, England’s Au Pairs the first time I saw the fantastic film and a documentation of a time called URGH: A Music War. The post punk band blew me away with a super sexy and angular song called “Come Again” with its Gang of Four-esque dueling guitars and vocal attacks on social pressures to "achieve orgasmic equality". This particular track “We’re So Cool” is equally as intriguing and leads off the band’s debut album Playing with a Different Sex which was released in 1981 on Human Records.5. Empire State - “Pie Pan” (2000)This track is taken the self-titled debut album from the Athens, Georgia band Empire State, an experimental rock and downtempo electronic band formed by brothers Jay and Tim Nackashi along with Alex McManus. The brothers moved to Athens from Florida and formed the group. They quickly gained the attention of Man or Astro-man?’s Brian Causey who had started a new label called Warm Electronic Recordings. I got to see this short lived band only once when they opened for fellow Athenians Elf Power. They were equally as good live as they are recorded.
