A podcast for students on Anglia Ruskin University's Medical and Healthcare Education programme

Critical writing is a new (and often difficult) skill to learn

Writing critically is a skill that develops through practice, feedback, and reflection. In postgraduate medical and healthcare education, successful assignments require more than demonstrating knowledge. Students must evaluate evidence, apply theory, construct coherent arguments, and communicate clear academic judgements. This episode focuses on common pitfalls in critical writing and practical strategies that can help transform descriptive writing into thoughtful academic analysis

What do we want? Critical analysis! When do we want it? Now!

Success in postgraduate healthcare education depends not only on understanding educational theory and practice, but also on communicating ideas critically. Critical writing goes beyond description, requiring students to analyse evidence, evaluate competing perspectives, and construct reasoned arguments. Developing this skill enables healthcare professionals to engage with educational literature, justify decisions, and contribute meaningfully to evidence-informed practice.

    This is CRITICAL

Critical writing is a core skill in medical and healthcare education. While reflective writing focuses on personal experience and learning, critical writing requires students to evaluate evidence, compare perspectives, and construct convincing arguments. The strongest academic arguments are often those least likely to be challenged because they are grounded in high-quality evidence, acknowledge limitations, and demonstrate balanced reasoning. Learning how to build such arguments helps healthcare students become more effective scholars, clinicians, and decision-makers.

    Learning Like A Safe Clinician

Effective healthcare practice depends not only on what clinicians know, but also on their ability to learn from experience. Reflective practice helps students and practitioners examine their decisions, recognise strengths and limitations, and continually improve patient care. In the complex and uncertain environments of modern healthcare, reflection supports professional growth, clinical reasoning, and safer practice.

    Reflection and Critical writing

Healthcare professionals encounter challenges, mistakes, and unexpected outcomes throughout their training and careers. What distinguishes effective clinicians is not the absence of failure, but how they respond to it. Reflective practice provides a structured approach to learning from setbacks, helping students transform difficult experiences into opportunities for growth. Through reflection, learners develop insight, resilience, and the capacity for continuous improvement, all essential qualities for safe and effective clinical practice.

    Deep & Surface Learning

Deep learning builds meaningful, connected understanding—exactly what healthcare students need for safe clinical practice. Superficial learning focuses on memorising isolated facts, often collapsing under pressure. By designing teaching that promotes schema building, active retrieval, and real‑world application, educators help students move from short‑term recall to durable, flexible expertise.

    Forget Me Not

Forgetting is a natural and essential part of how memory works—but in healthcare education it can feel like the enemy. Memory failures occur when encoding is shallow, retrieval pathways weaken, or interference disrupts recall. Teachers can counter this through structured retrieval practice, spaced repetition, and schema‑building. Clinically, these principles echo what we observe in dementia: disrupted encoding, impaired consolidation, and reduced retrieval capacity.

    Recall and Order

Active retrieval is one of the most powerful learning strategies in healthcare education. Instead of re‑reading or highlighting, students strengthen memory by pulling information out, not pushing more in. Regular recall builds durable neural pathways, improves clinical reasoning, and reduces the “blank‑page panic” during exams or real‑world patient encounters.
