The Anatomy of The Local Church
In this series, we will step back and consider what Scripture teaches about the nature, purpose, and function of the local church. Before looking at the details of church life at the local level, we will first consider the larger reality of the Body of Christ—God’s eternal purpose to be “all in all” through the exaltation of His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ. The series will examine how the local church is not built upon human wisdom, tradition, preference, or mere routine, but upon the doctrine, purpose, and power of God revealed in His Word. A major emphasis will be guarding against “vain worship”—having only a form of godliness while missing the power, purpose, and meaning behind what God has called His people to be and do. From Scripture, we will consider how every believer is a member of the Body of Christ, joined to Christ the Head, taught and strengthened by the Spirit of God through the Word of God, and called to grow for the profit and edification of the whole body. The local church is where these spiritual realities are lived out together in practical ways: worship, fellowship, service, ministry, growth, unity, accountability, and love. This series will help the church think biblically about why we gather, what we are doing when we gather, how each member contributes to the body, and how the local church is to function according to God’s design. The goal is not merely participation in church activity, but purposeful life together in Christ—so that the church may grow up into Him in all things and edify itself in love.
