This Place Called Earth

James Miller

This Place Called Earth explores the hidden architecture of our lived experiences through psychology, nervous-system regulation, relationships, language, consciousness and social behaviour. Created and presented by James Miller, each series combines evidence, observation, philosophy and open inquiry to examine how we become shaped and how greater awareness, discernment, responsibility and connection may help us change.

Somatic Inversions - Arc 4 - The Inversion of Knowing - How “Knowing” Is Used to Control You

Somatic Inversions - Arc 4 - The Inversion of Knowing - How “Knowing” Is Used to Control You “Knowing” is often treated as certainty: a belief defended, a position adopted, or an answer that no longer needs questioning. In this episode of Somatic Inversions - Arc Four, we explore a different idea of knowing: one grounded in perception, regulation and the ability to remain open enough to notice what is actually happening. Drawing on neuroscience, Polyvagal Theory, predictive processing and linguistic framing, we look at how claims of certainty can be used to close curiosity, override personal perception and shift authority away from direct experience towards ideology, hierarchy or external narratives. We also explore how nervous-system state can shape what feels true. Under threat, certainty can become psychologically attractive because it reduces ambiguity. In more regulated states, there may be greater capacity for nuance, uncertainty and revision. This episode reframes knowing not as rigid certainty, but as the ability to stay connected to evidence, sensation, context and reality without needing to force experience into a fixed story. Sometimes control begins when someone tells you what you are supposed to know. #SomaticInversions #Knowing #NervousSystem #PredictiveProcessing #PolyvagalTheory #LinguisticFraming #Perception #SomaticAwareness #Discernment #Embodiment #ThisPlaceCalledEarth

Somatic Inversions - Arc 3 - The Cooperative Trap - How Helping Manipulators Slowly Rewires Your Allegiance

Somatic Inversions - Arc 3 - The Cooperative Trap - How Helping Manipulators Slowly Rewires Your Allegiance Some loyalty is not built through trust or respect. It is built gradually through participation. In this episode of Somatic Inversions - Arc Three, we explore the cooperative trap: how small favours, concessions and acts of helping can slowly increase emotional investment in a person, group or dynamic. Drawing on reciprocity research, the Ben Franklin effect and organisational psychology, we look at why giving can strengthen commitment. Each favour can make the relationship feel more meaningful, each concession can make withdrawal harder, and repeated cooperation can gradually shift how we justify the connection to ourselves. In manipulative dynamics, this can become especially powerful when someone encourages you to keep investing while giving little in return. Over time, defending the relationship may become easier than admitting how much of yourself has already been placed inside it. The trap is not generosity itself. It is when your willingness to give is used to manufacture allegiance. Manipulators do not always win loyalty by giving more. Sometimes they win it by getting you to give more. #SomaticInversions #CooperativeTrap #Manipulation #Reciprocity #BenFranklinEffect #NervousSystem #CoerciveControl #OrganisationalPsychology #Boundaries #SelfTrust #ThisPlaceCalledEarth

Somatic Inversions - Arc 3 - Paralysis Framing - When “No Good Option” Is the Manipulation Itself

Somatic Inversions - Arc 3 - Paralysis Framing - When “No Good Option” Is the Manipulation Itself Some forms of manipulation do not push you towards a particular choice. They make every available choice feel unsafe. In this episode of Somatic Inversions - Arc Three, we explore paralysis framing: how double-binds, no-win scenarios and conflicting demands can overload decision-making and weaken a person’s sense of agency. Drawing on decision neuroscience, trauma responses and research into coercive dynamics, we look at what happens when every option appears to carry punishment, rejection or loss. Under enough pressure, the nervous system may shift towards freeze, appeasement or shutdown simply to reduce the immediate threat. Across relationships, families, workplaces and wider systems of influence, impossible choices can become a form of behavioural control because they make independent action feel increasingly costly. This episode reframes paralysis not simply as indecision, but as a possible response to an environment in which no available option feels genuinely safe. Sometimes the trap is not which choice you make. The trap is being convinced that there was never a safe choice to begin with. #SomaticInversions #ParalysisFraming #DoubleBind #NervousSystem #Manipulation #CoerciveControl #DecisionMaking #FreezeResponse #Autonomy #SomaticAwareness #ThisPlaceCalledEarth

Somatic Inversions - Arc 3 - Identity Hijacking - When Someone Rewrites Your Traits to Control Your Behaviour

Somatic Inversions - Arc 3 - Identity Hijacking - When Someone Rewrites Your Traits to Control Your Behaviour Some of the deepest forms of manipulation do not target behaviour directly. They target identity. In this episode of Somatic Inversions - Arc Three, we explore identity hijacking: how repeated labels, shame, criticism and distorted narratives can gradually influence the way someone sees themselves. Drawing on memory science, relational psychology and research into high-control environments, we look at why self-perception can become more vulnerable under chronic stress or emotional pressure. If someone repeatedly tells you that you are selfish, unstable, difficult, weak or incapable, those messages can begin to shape behaviour as well as identity. Over time, the manipulation becomes more powerful because external control is no longer required in the same way. The person begins regulating themselves according to the identity they have been given. This episode explores why reclaiming autonomy sometimes means questioning not only what you were told to do, but what you were taught to believe about who you are. Manipulation does not always begin with behaviour. Sometimes it begins by rewriting the story of the self. #SomaticInversions #IdentityHijacking #Manipulation #NervousSystem #SelfPerception #CoerciveControl #RelationalPsychology #Shame #Autonomy #SomaticAwareness #ThisPlaceCalledEarth
