Murder at the High School / The Witnesses Talk

Clarence Brandley remained on death row, but the witnesses whose testimony helped convict him were no longer telling the same story. In Episode Seven of Murder at the High School, Jimmy examines the testimony that emerged during Brandley’s post-conviction hearings. John Sessum admitted that he had committed perjury. Gary Acreman acknowledged speaking with Cheryl Dee Fergeson shortly before she disappeared and admitted that he had not remained with the other custodians throughout the critical period. Henry Peace described alleged threats, physical intimidation and racial language used during the investigation. Another witness revealed that she had reported seeing two white men hurrying through the school shortly after Cheryl vanished—information that was never properly investigated or disclosed to Brandley’s defense. The new testimony did not conclusively identify Cheryl’s killer. But it challenged the foundation of Brandley’s conviction and exposed a very different story from the one presented to the jury. After years of silence, the witnesses were finally talking. The question was whether the courts would listen. Murder at the High School: A Behind The Pine Curtain Limited Series. Murder at the High School / The Story Changes

For years, the case against Clarence Brandley rested on a seemingly straightforward story: Cheryl Dee Fergeson entered a restroom, Brandley followed her upstairs and the other custodians remained together—leaving him as the only man with the opportunity to commit the crime. Then the witnesses began telling different stories. In Episode Six of Murder at the High School, Jimmy examines the recantations, recorded statements and startling admissions that transformed Brandley’s case. One witness declared on videotape that Brandley was innocent before withdrawing his account. Another admitted committing perjury at the first trial. Details omitted for years suddenly emerged, including a conversation with Cheryl and a thirty-minute gap in another custodian’s timeline. The testimony did not conclusively identify Cheryl’s killer. But it exposed something the juries had never been told: the prosecution’s central timeline was neither independent nor reliable. As Clarence Brandley remained on death row, the story that put him there was beginning to collapse. Murder at the High School: A Behind The Pine Curtain Limited Series. Murder at the High School / Things Don't Fit

Clarence Brandley had been convicted of murdering sixteen-year-old Cheryl Dee Fergeson and sentenced to death. To the State of Texas, the case was closed. But the evidence did not fit as neatly as prosecutors claimed. In Episode Five of Murder at the High School, Jimmy examines the growing doubts surrounding Brandley’s conviction. Witness statements conflicted. Timelines shifted. Physical evidence failed to conclusively connect Brandley to the crime, while potentially important testing was never completed. Information that could have challenged the prosecution’s story was overlooked, withheld or eventually lost. As Brandley waited on death row, attorneys and supporters began taking a closer look at the case—and discovered that the story presented to the jury was beginning to fall apart. If Clarence Brandley did not kill Cheryl, who did? And how many people knew that things simply did not fit? Murder at the High School: A Behind The Pine Curtain Limited Series. Murder at the High School / Death

Clarence Brandley’s first trial ended with eleven jurors voting to convict and one refusing to surrender his doubt. The mistrial should have forced prosecutors to confront the weaknesses in their case. Instead, the State of Texas tried again. In Episode Four of Murder at the High School, Jimmy examines Brandley’s second trial, the prosecution’s renewed circumstantial case and a courtroom atmosphere shaped by race, fear and the demand for a conviction. The witnesses remained largely the same. The physical evidence still did not conclusively identify Brandley as Cheryl Dee Fergeson’s attacker. But this time, there would be no holdout juror. Clarence Brandley was convicted of capital murder. The jury then answered the questions that allowed the court to impose the ultimate punishment. Death. How did a case without a confession, a murder weapon or conclusive physical evidence place a man on Texas death row? Murder at the High School: A Behind The Pine Curtain Limited Series. Murder at the High School / Eleven to One

The State of Texas charged Clarence Brandley with the rape and murder of sixteen-year-old Cheryl Dee Fergeson. The case offered no confession, no eyewitness to the killing and no physical evidence conclusively identifying Brandley as Cheryl’s attacker. What prosecutors did have was a circumstantial story built around a restroom, a set of keys, a white towel, Brandley’s knowledge of the school—and testimony from custodians whose accounts would later change. In Episode Three of Murder at the High School, Jimmy examines Brandley’s first trial, the disputed physical evidence and the allegations used to portray him as a dangerous man. The prosecution asked jurors to believe that Brandley was the only person who had the opportunity to kill Cheryl. Eleven jurors accepted that story. One did not. The result was a deadlocked jury, a mistrial—and the beginning of the State of Texas’ second attempt to convict Clarence Brandley and send him to death row. Murder at the High School / Five Custodians

Five custodians were working inside Conroe High School on the morning sixteen-year-old Cheryl Dee Fergeson was murdered. Within six days, investigators arrested Clarence Brandley—the only Black member of the custodial crew. In Episode Two of Murder at the High School, Jimmy examines the shifting statements, missing details and disputed timelines surrounding the men who became the prosecution’s most important witnesses. One witness admitted committing perjury. Another recorded statements declaring Brandley innocent before taking them back. A former custodian who was not scheduled to work was later acknowledged to have been inside the school. Meanwhile, an investigative walk-through conducted after Brandley’s arrest may have helped transform conflicting accounts into a single story. How did five custodians’ movements become the foundation of the case against Clarence Brandley—and why had investigators already selected their suspect before conducting the critical reconstruction?
