  1. Episode 1

The Seven Lamps of Architecture Preface and Introductory

In which the author, moved by a profound affection for architecture and a desire to illuminate its essential principles, candidly acknowledges his path as that of an observer rather than a practitioner, offering reflections borne from direct study and heartfelt conviction. He beseeches the reader to consider the art as intertwined with moral virtue and divine purpose, proposing that true architectural grace is guided by immutable laws rooted in humanity’s spiritual nature.

  2. Episode 2

The Seven Lamps of Architecture Chapter I - The Lamp of Sacrifice Part 1

In which the author sets forth a thoughtful distinction between mere building and the art of architecture, emphasising that true architecture transcends utility to embody beauty and venerable character. He then meditates on the spirit of sacrifice as essential to great architectural work, drawing upon divine precedents to argue that offerings given from the heart, even in costly and elaborate form, honour their sacred purpose beyond mere necessity.

  3. Episode 3

The Seven Lamps of Architecture Chapter I - The Lamp of Sacrifice Part 2

In which the nature of architectural sacrifice and the spirit of true offering are gently unfolded, emphasising simplicity and sincerity over ostentation and vain display; and an earnest plea is made for honest craftsmanship, careful distribution of ornament in harmony with material and distance, and the exquisite balance of labor that reveals the noblest character of a building’s adornment. Thus, through the contemplation of delicate yet substantial medieval carvings and the lessons of their enduring beauty, we are invited to cherish the profound testimony of bygone devotion expressed in stone, rather than the fleeting splendour of superficial decoration.

  4. Episode 4

The Seven Lamps of Architecture Chapter II - The Lamp of Truth Part 1

In which the intricate and noble virtue of truth is considered both as a moral beacon and as a guiding principle in the arts, particularly in architecture, where deceit in material and structure is condemned as a grave failing. Ruskin reflects upon the delicate balance between imagination and reality, advocating for honest construction free from pretence while acknowledging certain acceptable exceptions and the cautious use of new materials within time-honoured bounds.

  5. Episode 5

The Seven Lamps of Architecture Chapter II - The Lamp of Truth Part 2

In which the delicate balance between structural truth and artistic ingenuity is observed, cautioning against deceptive devices that compromise the honest expression of building materials and craftsmanship. Ruskin gently admonishes the misuse of painted and cast work in architecture, extolling the virtues of genuine materials and the human touch as the true sources of beauty and integrity in design.

  6. Episode 6

The Seven Lamps of Architecture Chapter II - The Lamp of Truth Part 3

In which the faithful handcraft of stone and the honest confession of material truth are extolled above the cold artifice of cast iron and mechanical substitutes, with a reverent tracing of Gothic tracery's evolution revealing a delicate balance between light and stone that once marked architectural grandeur. Yet, as this balance yielded to a misplaced delight in intricate lines and deceitful intersections, the art surrendered its integrity and strength, leading to its slow decline beneath the weight of falsehood and overweening ornament.

  7. Episode 7

The Seven Lamps of Architecture Chapter III - The Lamp of Power Part 1

In which the contemplative observer reflects upon the enduring qualities of architecture, distinguishing between the delicate beauty that invites affectionate admiration and the solemn majesty that inspires awe, much like the enduring forms of nature themselves. The discourse then explores how true sublimity in building arises from a harmonious assertion of human dominion and reverent sympathy with the vastness of the natural world, best expressed through careful consideration of size, form, and the profound interplay of mass and line.

  8. Episode 8

The Seven Lamps of Architecture Chapter III - The Lamp of Power Part 2

In which the enduring majesty of architectural forms—be they square or rounded—is explored with a thoughtful eye to the interplay of scale, material, and the noble articulation of masonry. The discourse then turns to the vital role of light and shadow in design, revealing the profound necessity for architects to conceive in masses of shade and illumination, thus imparting a dignity that mirrors the solemn truths of human experience.

  9. Episode 9

The Seven Lamps of Architecture Chapter III - The Lamp of Power Part 3

In which the intricate interplay of light and shadow is revealed as the lifeblood of architectural beauty, with broad masses and deep recesses commanding the eye more surely than delicate ornamentation or sharp lines. The author meditates on the noble restraint and powerful simplicity of ancient designs, lamenting the thinness and timid precision of modern work and urging a renewed sympathy with nature’s grandeur to inspire greater breadth and substance in architecture.

  10. Episode 10

The Seven Lamps of Architecture Chapter IV - The Lamp of Beauty Part 1

In which the profound beauty of architecture is gently unveiled as a harmony between human endeavour and the noble forms found abundantly in nature, insisting that true ornament must echo the frequent and delicate lines wrought by natural creation. The text thoughtfully condemns artificial and ill-placed decorations, urging a return to natural grace and structure as the wellspring of architectural delight and dignity.
