Opening day at the Fan Fest with Neha, Vipul and Inder: Korea come from behind to beat Czechia, the summer's first comeback, celebrated with Nepali chow mein at Mount Everest. Then the Fan Fest closes for Argentina's opener — a hat-trick from the number ten, watched from his own couch — and BC Place glows over a city full of other people's flags, already holding a heartbreak for a stranger he hasn't met yet. Then east: a flight to Toronto, staying with Parthiv, for the real anchor of the leg — Aditya's wedding, a Friday-night match with Harshil and Nirmit, and a celebration to launch a road trip from. This is the origin story of everything that follows — sixteen years of midnight kickoffs, a club chosen because of a little Argentine number ten, the B.Tech crew who kept the line open across oceans for a decade, and the heartbreaks of 2014 and 2018 watched on cracked screens. Then Qatar 2022: newly landed in Canada, watching the greatest final ever played alone in a room, he makes a promise out loud to nobody — the next one is on my continent, and I'm going everywhere.
