    Today I’m talking to Katherine Mendelsohn, a translator and dramaturg who spent over a decade as Literary Manager at the Traverse Theatre in Edinburgh, and also worked at the Gate Theatre, the Royal Shakespeare Company and the Royal Court. She has introduced UK audiences to contemporary Francophone voices from France, Québec and across Africa, as well as bringing fresh life to French classics. In our conversation, Katherine gets to the very centre of how plays are made — and her insights changed the way I think about writing overnight.

    A conversation with Stephen Greenhorn

    Writing for Stage, Screen and Musical Theatre: A Conversation with Stephen Greenhorn In 2013, I spoke with writer Stephen Greenhorn about his journey from student plays to television, Doctor Who, and the hit musical Sunshine on Leith. Greenhorn’s career began when his first play was spotted at the Fringe, leading to theatre commissions and his breakthrough, Passing Places. Television followed, with credits on The Bill, Glasgow Kiss, Doctor Who, and the creation of River City. He spoke candidly about balancing creativity with the demands of commissions, the compromises of collaboration, and the pressures that once led to a mental health crisis. On Sunshine on Leith, Greenhorn sought a Scottish story built from The Proclaimers’ emotionally rich songs, crafting a musical where characters sang to express what words couldn’t. Always a learner, he embraced new forms—from musicals to TV drama—studying scripts and working with mentors like Russell T Davies, who taught him about pacing and visual rhythm.
