Through thought leadership conversations, reflections drawn from real consulting work, and interviews with practitioners, clients, and sector partners, CONFLUENCE showcases the expertise, relationships, and impact that define this field. It's also a space for early-stage consultants - especially women - to find inspiration and connection as we explore what it means to build collective, values-driven consulting practice in our sectors.

Episode 4: Generous and Generative - Raijeli Nicole on Doing Development Differently

In this fourth episode of Confluence, host Eunchim Choi and co-host Sarah Badju Tollestrup are joined by Raijeli Nicole, former Regional Director of Oxfam in the Pacific and a longtime friend and thinking partner of The Mangrove Collective.  Raijeli opens by sharing how names carry genealogy in Fiji, and how being raised by her aunties and grandmothers has shaped a career across development banking, teaching, government, the women’s movement and international development. Picking up from her interview for TMC’s report on women leaders in Asia and the Pacific, she shares how that conversation set her on the path to a PhD on how Pacific feminists do development.  The three reflect on including women in a broken system that depends on unpaid care work, holding accountability to communities to the same standard as accountability to donors, and where the sector’s results-based tools really come from. The conversation closes with how to sit with discomfort and still act, and with “islanding,” Raijeli’s framework for organisational transition built on being generous and generative - where the process matters as much as the outcome. Episode 3: Beyond the Ladder - Jessica Smith on Consulting, Careers and Resilience

In this third episode of Confluence, host Eunchim Choi is joined by longtime friend and former TMC director Jessica Smith, whose path to The Mangrove Collective began when their careers kept crossing in New Zealand's small development and humanitarian sector. The two trace Jessica's journey from Tearfund, New Zealand's mission in Geneva and World Vision to her 2021 move into consulting in the middle of Auckland's lockdowns, and how she grew from a self-described generalist into TMC's business development and evaluation lead. They reflect on the limited leadership pathways for women balancing careers and family, why a career doesn't have to be a climb up the ladder, and the value of staying focused on the quality of the work. They also open up about the realities of working with all kinds of consultants and clients, including the behind-the-scenes challenges behind a polished final product. The conversation closes with what has carried Jessica through challenging seasons: the people around her, faith that things will turn out, and small daily habits that build resilience.  -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The CONFLUENCE Podcast is hosted by The Mangrove Collective, an international humanitarian and development/social impact consultancy.
